Guest Anglesault Report post Posted June 4, 2003 CINCINNATI -- Derek Jeter has been the unofficial captain of the New York Yankees for most of his eight-year career. Tuesday, it became official. Owner George Steinbrenner tabbed Jeter as the 11th captain in franchise history, the first since Don Mattingly retired after the 1995 season. The announcement came at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, where Jeter and the Yankees open a three-game series against the Reds on Tuesday night. Also in attendance for the announcement were general partners Hal Steinbrenner and Steve Swindal, general manager Brian Cashman, manager Joe Torre and former co-captain and current third-base coach Willie Randolph. "I have always been very, very careful about giving such a responsibility to one of my players," Steinbrenner said, "but I can not think of a single player that I have ever had who is more deserving of this honor than Derek Jeter. "He is a young man of great character and has shown great leadership qualities," the owner added. "He believes, as I do, what General (Douglas) MacArthur said, that 'there is no substitute for victory.' To him, and to me, it's second only to breathing." "This is a great honor," Jeter said. "Captain of the Yankees is not a title that is thrown around lightly. It is a huge responsibility and one that I take very seriously. I thank Mr. Steinbrenner for having such confidence in me." Jeter played 15 games with Mattingly in 1995, and has been one of the leaders of the Yankees during Torre era, which began in 1996. "Derek is a great and logical choice," Mattingly said. "What he has done speaks for himself. He handles himself with class and dignity and seems more and more comfortable being out in front." Jeter, 28, is the sixth player to be named captain in 31 years by Steinbrenner, and is the second-youngest to hold the title, as he is one month older than Thurman Munson was at the time of his appointment in 1976. Jeter has been named to five American League All-Star teams and played on four World Series championship teams, winning the World Series MVP award in 2000, the same season in which he took home All-Star Game MVP honors. Jeter ranks fifth on the team's all-time list with a .316 batting average, trailing only Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Earle Combs and Joe DiMaggio. "In their first 100 seasons, the New York Yankees had only 10 team captains," said general manager Brian Cashman. "Derek Jeter has no doubt demonstrated that he is uniquely qualified to be our first Captain since Don Mattingly and the first of our second century." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ""This is a great honor. Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted June 4, 2003 Who wears the "C" on the Mets? Is that what that is on Sosa's jersey? I've always wondered. And I thought that Steinbrenner hated Jeter and his "socializing ways"

Guest Some Guy Report post Posted June 5, 2003 WHoopty Doo! The Yankees have a captain. As though that means anything. If anybody didn't know that that is Jeter's team then they haven't been paying attention for a few years. Having a "C" on your jersey means nothing. But if the two games after he started wearing it are any indication of his captaining abilities I'm all for it. He's captained them to 2 losses, here's hoping for about 100 more.
