Guest oldschoolwrestling Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 WWE runs their first Smackdown only PPV on 7/27 in Denver, CO and the word making the rounds is that the main event will be a WrestleMania rematch with Brock Lesnar defending his WWE Title against Kurt Angle. I have been told by a few people that local media outlets in the city have already been told that will be the main event. Advertising is said to be in the works for the match as well. Obviously, at least part of whether it will happen depends on how well Angle holds up as he returns from neck surgery. As we reported last week, the house shows later this month are scheduled to be headlined by the team of Angle and Brock Lesnar taking on John Cena and The Big Show. 1wrestling.com
Guest Coffey Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 So what are Chris Benoit & Rhyno going to do? Sit on the sidelines with their thumbs up their asses again? What about all that talk that Chris Benoit & Rhyno weren't doing anything currently because they were waiting on the sidelines for something big to happen? *sigh*
Guest Coffey Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 There's a difference between gullible & hopeful.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 is there? *ominous silence*
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 Are we talking about the same company that is advertising HHH vs. Goldberg for the PPV next week?
Guest Coffey Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 I'd rather watch HHH/Goldberg than HHH/Nash HiaC...
Guest Anglesault Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 If they run that, Angle must win. They can't have him repeatedly job to Brock.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 Taker/Brock ended in DQ. I figure they would probably want to carry it over to Summerslam (unless _someone_ doesn't want the spotlight being taken from their big match with Goldberg) so some screwy finish needs to be done. Their match at SS will probably also be a gimmick match (2/3 falls, I quit)
cawthon777 Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 I would hardly call 2 losses as repeatedly jobbing. Brock / Angle seems too big for a non-big 5 PPV. If anything, I would save that for Summer Slam and put Brock against either a Benoit or Rhyno just prior to then. Personally, I think it's TOO soon to throw Angle back into the title picture after WrestleMania but - if he does get a title shot - Brock should go over.
DrVenkman PhD Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 5 weeks ago I was certain Brock/Angle was going to main event the first ever SD! PPV in an attempt to make it look big, much the same way I assumed HHH/Goldberg would do the same at Bad Blood. Spoiler (Highlight to Read): However, after reading the SD! Spoilers, Angle/Brock seems really unlikely since they're all buddy/buddy now. I imagine Angle/Brock was planned for a heel Angle return, but the creative side that was lobbying for babyface won, so looks like a Brock/Kurt vs. Team Benoit feud until Kurt and Brock eventually face off again at WMXX .

That Angle can't beat Lesnar?
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 Or they could have Lesnar turn heel, cheat to beat Angle, and Angle tries to get revenge. RRR: Looking for whatever opening to get a heel Lesnar vs. a face Angle

That Angle can't beat Lesnar? Yeah, that's EXACTLY what everyone thought during the Dreamer/Raven feud and the Misawa/Kawada feud, that Dreamer and Kawada were pussies who couldn't beat the other guy. 2 losses is NOTHING in wrestling.
Guest OnlyMe Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 Brock / Angle seems too big for a non-big 5 PPV. It is a rematch though. Hogan / Rock II, HHH / Steiner II, Brock / Taker II, HHH / Nash II are all on non-big-5s
Guest Anglesault Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 In both cases, wasn't the guy that always won...the heel?
Guest Anglesault Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 Brock / Angle seems too big for a non-big 5 PPV. It is a rematch though. Hogan / Rock II, HHH / Steiner II, Brock / Taker II, HHH / Nash II are all on non-big-5s HHH/Steiner and HHH/Nash is a stretch for BIG matches. And technically, HHH/Nash is on one of the big five. It's just no longer KotR
Guest ManKinnd Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 In both cases, wasn't the guy that always won...the heel? Ok, fair enough, what about Rock/Austin though? People bought Rock as a main event player no matter how many times he got pinned by Austin.
Guest OnlyMe Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 HHH/Steiner and HHH/Nash is a stretch for BIG matches. Fair point, but they were title matches so I felt duty bound to include them. And technically, HHH/Nash is on one of the big five. It's just no longer KotR I wouldn't count BB as a Big 5 PPV. There's only a Big 4 now.
Guest AndrewTS Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 Taker/Brock ended in DQ. Yes, the first match at Unforgiven. The shittier one. The one that, after the DQ was called, prompted the fans to yell "BULLSHIT! BULLSHIT!!" And Taker beat the shit out of Brock after the bell, so he basically went over in that match.

Rumble, Mania, King of the Ring, Summerslam, Survivor Series? Just call it the Big 3. Survivor Series isn't anything special anymore, either.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 I'm just saying that a DQ finish on a PPV is not out of the realm of possibility. This is the WWE, Brock vs. Angle won't end smoothly.
Guest OnlyMe Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 What was the "Big 5?" Rumble, Mania, King of the Ring, Summerslam, Survivor Series? Yup - anything that isn't the "In your house" style of PPV. Just call it the Big 3. Survivor Series isn't anything special anymore, either. Sadly, neither is SummerSlam, really. [shill] I talked about Survivor Series in my column... see my sig [/shill]
Guest AndrewTS Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 OnlyMe: Summerslam, nothing special? The same Summerslam which has been one of the top shows of the year for the past five years? Nothing special? 98- Austin vs. Taker, Rock-HHH ladder match 99- Austin, Mankind, HHH main event w/ Ventura, Test-Shane, Rock/Gunn (er, okay...it was a decent match), Tag Turmoil 2000 - TLC I, Rock vs. HHH vs. Angle, Benoit/Jericho 2/3 falls 2001 - Booker vs. Rock, Angle vs. Austin, Jeff/RVD ladder match 2002 - Benoit/RVD, HHH/HBK, Rock/Brock, Rey/Angle NOTHING SPECIAL?!
Guest RedJed Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 I think the safe thing to do if they do this match is have some sort of no desicion akin to Nash-Bret Hart at Rumble 95. They can still have a hell of a match and then if Benoit and/or Rhyno did the turns to prompt a DQ, there could be some good from the no desicion. Dont have an Angle-Lesnar match #3 then until probably Mania or something, if you ask me. Turn Lesnar on Angle sometime early next year.
Guest Anglesault Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 In both cases, wasn't the guy that always won...the heel? Ok, fair enough, what about Rock/Austin though? People bought Rock as a main event player no matter how many times he got pinned by Austin. Kurt Angle is NOT the Rock. Angle has a shitload more baggage with him than Rocky does. As bad as Rocky Maivia was for first six months of his career, The WWF has been intentionally worse for Angle for THREE AND A HALF YEARS.
cawthon777 Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 Dont have an Angle-Lesnar match #3 then until probably Mania or something, if you ask me. Turn Lesnar on Angle sometime early next year. I certainly hope Smackdown has enough main event players by the time of WrestleMania that they don't have to rely on Angle / Lesnar #3.
Guest Austin3164life Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 This match should not happen until Wrestlemania XX. Stupid idea if they go through with it, but this is probably false advertising. Angle should have a good feud for the summer before being immediately thrown back into the World Title picture.
