Is Goldberg selling for folks

Recommended Posts

Guest Redhawk

Goldberg selling for people right now is a bad thing. And that doesn't just apply to selling for the "upper echelon" guys on RAW, because he shouldn't have come in facing them right away in the first place. The same applies/applied for Scott Steiner, Brock Lesnar, Three-Minute Warning, Rhyno, and anyone else who is/was supposed to be a monster.

If you're bringing in a "monster," you feed him midcarders/jobbers at first and don't have him sell for ANYONE. Even in the case of a veteran like Steiner or Goldberg, while a lot of fans already know who they are and know they're supposed to be beasts, a lot of fans don't. So you have to remind some people and intriduce to others that "Look, this man is a monster." If it's a rookie who's supposed to be a monster (Brock, 3MW, etc.) he should come in no-selling since even less people know who he is.

During this introductory stage, your monster should not be facing top guys and he should not be selling. Then, once you've established to the fans that this guy is a monster, you move him up the card to face the almost-top guys, at which point he can sell somewhat and hopefully start to make stars out of the guys who he's selling to. I think they did this correctly with Brock Lesnar. He didn't sell for anyone until he ran across Bubba Ray Dudley, who WWE was trying to make into a star. When Brock first came in, the fans bought him as a monster because he was destroying the Hardy Boys and Crashes of the world and not selling a damn thing. They completely fucked it up with 3MW, who only destroyed senior citizens and non-wrestlers, then had to sell for a couple of (in storyline) queers (Billy and Chuck)

After you've had Goldberg (or whoever) no-selling everything, it's going to mean something when he DOES sell something and it's going to make someone a star. For example: had Goldberg been no-selling from the beginning and not had to face The Rock right away, it would have been meaningful when someone like, say, RVD finally made a dent in him. As it is now, Goldberg came in selling just like everyone else, so why should he be seen as special?

Besides, I'd rather have WWE tell new guys to no-sell to build them up rather than doing the "major comeback from an ass-kicking" thing. Just look at Undertaker matches, and you can see that WWE bookers don't know how to properly book comebacks anyway. They just have Taker do some selling, then go, "Okay, that's enough of that" and proceed to win. Even Shawn Michaels does it now.

In a nutshell? Goldberg should sell. Just not yet.

Plus all that build up helps you get a better idea of how over a guy can get when you back him and can give you a better idea of how well he can draw heat and ratings. That way you aren't stuck with them in main events when they fail completely to get over like Scott Steiner did and Kevin Nash is doing now.

Funny when I saw the segment I saw 1) Goldberg standing there 2) Jericho coming from behind with a chair to hit him LIKE A COMPLETE GIRL just like he hits everything 3) Goldberg go down from the little contact Jericho actually made 4) Jericho run off and 5) Goldberg get up after a few seconds to do the smile thing so he didn't get completely punked out again for the fourth week in a row.

Christ, you all might as well call Foley a no seller since he's taking far worse chair shots to the face and a pedigree (which MURDERS everyone) on a chair no less and continues to function.

don't even try to compare foley selling to goldberg selling. see, foley acted like it actually HURT, and was visibly fighting through the pain just to remain conscious. he also acted unconscious (or at least immobilized) for a good while before he got up.

goldberg didn't even go down, he just kind of knelt down into a crouching position like he was picking up something off the floor. the expression on his face did not read "oh my god that hurt," it read "eh...that kind of stung a little." then he got back up and smiled. as i said before, it wasn't even cool no-selling, it was just refusing to sell.

there's a difference between taking a pedigree and barely continuing to function, & taking a chairshot then acting like nothing happened.

by the way, how does this make it look like goldberg got punked out? this is the wrestling equivalent of a guy running up to you, saying "tag, you're it!" and running away. in no way, shape or form, did that segment give anybody the slightest idea that jericho might win. it doesn't matter if goldberg looks like a dumb shit, because in order for people to think me might lose, he has to look vulnerable. jericho came off looking a lot worse than goldberg in the segment. (unless you count the whole "exposing the business" thing--then goldberg looked worse, but that's as a worker, not as a character.)

Like when he got mased, got right back up got speared and then got right back up again?

As opposed to all the times he's even managed to touch Jericho in any way shape or form?

It builds to the show.

And he's touched him, just not speared him

And you are HONESTLY saying that chasing Jericho all over the world, constantly laughing at him, and selling NONE of Jericho's attacks make FGB look weak?

I wish they'd make Kurt look that weak.

Goldberg is being made to look stupid, not weak.

Jericho is booked to look smart, but like a smart pussy.

I wanted Goldberg in the WWE...

That being said, I don't think "no selling" is ever the answer. It sucked when Undertaker was a "Dead Man." It sucked when Sid "forgot." It sucked when Kane was Taker's relative. I don't care how big someone is, they should sell moves. Look at Brock & Vader. They are two good examples. Sure, Vader might not sell everything like Brock does, but he is a monster...so he plays the "that slowed me down, but can't stop me" card a lot. Same with Goldberg.

That's pretty much it. This feud could have been a lot better, for both guys. They both look bad instead of both looking good.
