Any Blockbuster employees here?

Recommended Posts

Guest Kingpk

I ask this because I'm thinking of getting a job at my local one. My current job is kind of getting dull and they're not giving me the hours I want (a lot of HS kids are coming in). I just want to know if, generally, it's a good place to work.

Eh, I work at Movie Gallery, the #1 Secondary Market Video Rental Store in the nation!

We're SO better. If you've got one around there, I advise going there instead.

Shush.

I work at Blockbuster as a Shift Leader (read: assistant manager), and I love it so far. I do have to deal with a lot of idiot customers, but I think it's mainly just due to the area that my Blockbuster is in rather than the customers themselves. Pay is decent, benefits are awesome (they've even got them for part-timers which is cool), and I love renting movies.

Of course after a while you will get tired of having to argue about late fees with customers. NEVER listen if a manager says (and I quote because I've had 2 different interview opportunities with the company, and they both said the same thing) If we hire you for part-time work, trust us you will be getting part-time hours, we don't hire people for 20-25 hours and then give them full-time...the part they always leave out is usually at the end they should say "unless that's what they want". I took the job warily at Blockbuster as a "part-time" manager and have been getting close to or over 40 hours a week, but I made it very clear in the interviews I needed as many hours as possible.

All I want is 20-25 hours. Just something to tide me over for the summer. I don't really have much on my plate for this summer since I'm going to Miami in October (for the Pats/Dolphins game).

No my friend. Sadly, people become idiots once they enter any Blockbuster. It just ain't you.

*shudders* Trust me. I've dealt with far to many of them.

Onto Kingpk's question, it's a good job. You'd like it. It's a pretty easier job with the new changes to how the store is run (we've had some policy changes).

All in all good.

It ain't always the Blockbuster customers that are idiots. Someone stole my Blockbuster card so I canceled it. Which Blockbuster happyly opened right back up for the guy when he went in and said "Oh yeah, I found my card." So I get a letter saying I haven't returned (sigh) I'm Bout It and I got the Hook up. So I close the account again. Only to recieve another letter from the SAME blockbuster saying I haven't returned (sigh) Senseless and Foolish...

They actually expect me to pay for this craptacular line up of tapes...TAPES that aparently cost them like 80 dollars each. Those shits are 5.88 at Walmart on DVD...EIGHTY BUCKS!!!

Moral of my story, Blockbuster is a evil corporation that has idiots running the counter in the Northlake area of Atlanta and Movie Gallery is #1...except in profits where they are #2...or #3 if Hollywood Video's keep poping up.

Loved the choice of movies that thief got. Once when my credit card was stolen the culprit used it to buy stuff from Lazurus department store. I was more upset that my card was used to buy crap from there than the actual theft itself...

Yeah, I was more pissed that those movies will be linked to me in any kind of way. To ever stand in line and hear, "Sir, you still have "I got the Hook-up" do you plan to return that soon." is a nightmare that I never want to live again.

When a rental place doesn't rent the movie out enough, they lose money on it for some unexplained reason. That's why they charge so much for movies.

I've tried to buy some wrestling videos from Blockbuster, and am constantly told that they can sell them, but it'll be about $100 because they haven't rented it out very much.

That's why I just get PPV's at home.

That's bullshit from an employee who is either too ignorant or too lazy to do a special order.

Blockbuster does special orders on tapes the store doesn't have in stock with a $5 deposit (at least that's our store policy).

Oh and trust me, it is my Blockbuster. I work right on the border of Little Havana and the rest of Urban Miami, so I get many, many, many, ignorant and/or otherwise stupid Hispanics (keep in mind I'm Cuban myself so this isn't necessarily me being racist here) who think they're ghetto or something and have to have an attitude. I remember going to the Blockbuster back in LA and customers weren't nearly as stupid, or had to project some sort of 'gangsta' image, at least maybe because I lived in the suburbs.

Video stores have to buy tapes from the distibuter and they cost about $80 for the store. teh thinking from teh movie people is that they should get a cut on the action since the store could make infinite money of a tape. So stores have to be careful what and how many movies they buy of they lose money really quickly. Although the owner of a local mom and pop video store that I go to for wrestling tapes (they have RF Shoots) has told me that he usually orderfs one copy of an $80 tape and then goes to Wal-Mart or Best Buy for multiple copies. Amzingly the guy has stayed in business despite Blockbuster being like 3 blocks down teh street. i'm thiking it has something to do with his massive porno room and copious ammount of middle aged perverts who rent 6 porns at once. Just a theory.

If it bothers you that much, then complain to the company about it.

I and my coworkers hate doing that sometimes, and what makes it worse is rude customers that don't even acknowledge us saying that. So it goes both ways. Apparently the reason we have to greet all our customers is for loss prevention purposes, as the thinking is that if we acknowledge shoplifters as they enter the store they're less likely to do it because they know already they're being watched.

I wonder if it's true..

That's a bunch of crap... the only way you are going to deter shoplifting is to follow around those with bad intentions, and since none of us are very proficient in ESP, these corporations come up with the stupidest ideas that some study proved.... Any shoplifter is going to wait until the attention is not on him/her and go for it in the place that is held up to the least scrutiny.... I used to work for Best Buy when they started up this crap, and basically its to say to the customer "Hi! Please spend money here because we are so nice and helpful!" and no other reason.

I know that these kids aren't making very much money and they have to do these things, so I will acknowledge them, and ask for help if I need it.

And I will always give my business to the mom and pop stores that Blockbuster is always trying to put out of business before I spend dime one in that homogenized, sterlized video store... Hollywood Video is bad enough. At least the mom and pop stores will have the guts to sell and rent movies that are not edited in any way, not to even mention porn flicks...

No offense to you dude, but the spineless, PC stance these corporations take just irks the hell out of me.

It's what's profitable however, and I can't argue with that.

Morals vs. Profit?
