Guest Redhawk Report post Posted June 12, 2003 With the New Jersey Devils winning the Stanley Cup and the New Jersey Nets in the running for the NBA championship, what city/area (not entire states, though) has been the the most successful in recent memory? What area has been the least successful? You can include college sports as well. For least successful, I think the Detroit area ranks right up there. The Lions and Tigers suck. The Red Wings have been great, but the Pistons have been above average (in the West they would be weak). Michigan State basketball has been good and Michigan football are still up there, but Michigan State football and U of Michigan basketball are in shambles. Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Chicago is pretty bad has well. The Bulls are horrible. The Blackhawks made the playoffs last year but their mediocre. The Cubs have won this year, but their the Cubs. The White Sox are a mediocre team. The Bears where good for one year, and fell back to earth. Northwestern is atrocious in B-Ball and Football. Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Washington DC is far and away the least successful sports city.. The Wizards suck..as well they should.. The Redskins suck even though they have Steinbrenner JR throwing money around like its confetti. The Capitals are average but should be better considering the talent they have

For most successful, gotta go with New York and the surrounding area. Four titles for the Yankees, an NL pennant for the Mets, three Cups for the Devils, two Eastern Conference titles for the Nets, and a Super Bowl trip for the Giants. And, if you want to go back to the last ten years or so, the Rangers won a Cup and the Knicks went to the NBA Finals as well. And I think St. John's made a surprise trip to the Sweet Sixteen a couple of years back. And Syracuse is only 6 hours away...let's include them too.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Bad: Charlotte / North Carolina ========================= Charlotte lost their basketball team, and will have to go through expansion team suckiness for a few years (not to mention a stupid team name and ugly uniforms). The Panthers are crap. The Hurricanes went to the Stanley Cup finals last year (didn't they? I don't follow hockey so much) but they lost. North Carolina men's basketball has been less-than-stellar. Duke men's basketball is always good, but they consider it a failure f they don't win the national championship and they haven't since like 2000. Duke football is horrible, and UNC football isn't that good as far as I know. There is no baseball team. But they've always got UNC women's soccer, I guess. Even in fake sports they're struggling. Ric Flair is a shell of his former self, half of the Hardy Boys self-destructed, and Hurricane is a comedy wrestler. Good: Oakland ============ The Raiders went to the Super Bowl. The Athletics were in the playoffs. The Warriors got within sniffing distance of the playoffs after years of being crappy, and things are looking up for them. Cal-Berkeley, which I know the Oakland papers cover, was good in basketball and football last year and went to the NCAA softball title game.
Guest Some Guy Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Boston has actually been reasonably succesful teh last few years with teh Pats winning the Superbowl, the Celts and Bruins in teh playoffs and teh Sox being over .500. Whereas NYC has been pretty bad teh last few years aside from the Yanks the otehr teams have done nothign to speak of. And New Jersey doesn't count as part of New York and I know your Football teams play there for some reason. Oakland has been pretty good, Anaheim this year, New Jersey with the Nets at least. Guest CanadianChris Report post Posted June 12, 2003 And New Jersey doesn't count as part of New York If that was the case, then the Pistons wouldn't count as a Detroit team, and the Redskins wouldn't count as a Washington team. The Meadowlands must count as part of metropolitan NYC.

If that's the case, Oakland and San Francisco are only 15 minutes apart so throw in the SF 49ers and their 5 superbowls and the San Francisco Giants recent success. Guest razazteca Report post Posted June 12, 2003 New Jersey is more like Southern New York City for all sports purposes. The Rangers play in Arlington and Cowboys play in Irving neither really in Dallas itself but in the Metro area while the Mavericks play in downtown.

Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Oakland has definately been the hot spot lately.(besides the Golden State Warriors) Baseball & Football teams have been going to the playoffs the last few years and the Raiders came close to winning it all, while the A's have been picked to win it all the last couple of years.(they better do it this year). Guest Ripper Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Atlanta owns every city. The Falcons FINALLY made the playoffs last year for the first time since 98, the Hawks..(shudder) the Thrashers(shudder). Of course we do have the braves, but come on people...seriously. When it is all said and done, they won't win it all. The University of Georgia HAD a great B-ball team but got kicked out the tourny, the Football team is selling their class rings and losing eligibility, Georgia Tech sucks at everything, Morris Brown has gone out of business so all thier atheletes are hanging in the win. I think we Win!!
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted June 12, 2003 I wouldn't count the Nets and Devils as part of the New York sports scene. Instead of getting a nice parade in NYC- they have to have it in a friggin parking lot
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Hmm, I'm going by how successful pro teams have been in the last year or two, and the first city that comes to my mind is... San Diego. What they lack in quanity (only 2 teams) they make up for in "quality" First city that came to mind for success was St. Louis. Sure the Rams had an off-year in '02, but most of that was injury-related. The Cardinals and Blues always seem to be competitive, even if they don't win it all... I think we Win!! Dallas is better than ATL for reals man. Mavs > Hawks Stars > Thrashers Braves > Rangers Falcons > Cowboys But the tie breaker is college football...............Dallas gets the national televised Oklahoma vs UT game at the Cotton Bowl. The Meadowlands must count as part of metropolitan NYC. For the whole New Jersey/New York thing, I think that most people still consider the Jets and Giants as NY teams; even though they play in Jersey they're called NEW YORK. But the Devils and Nets can't be considered New York teams ... they're called NEW JERSEY for a reason. And even though I'm not the brightest bulb, I'm pretty sure that New Jersey and New York are two different states.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted June 12, 2003 The Giants and Jets are considered "New York" teams. The Giants have NY on their helmet. The fact that they're the only football teams in town helps. The Nets and Devils are overshadowed by the Knicks, Isles and Rangers

Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Best: New Jersey. The Nets are in the finals. The Devils won the Stanley Cup. The Giants were in the Super Bowl a couple of years back, and the Jets were the fastest rising team in the NFL at the end of last season. Anaheim is really good too, but they are only represented in two of the four major sports, whereas New Jersey is only missing an MLB team. Worst: South Florida/Miami. The Heat suck, the Panthers suck, the Marlins suck, and the Dolphins missed the playoffs last year.
The Dames 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Kahran, they don't have a football team. If the Jets became the New Jersey Jets (which would sound better than New Jersey Giants), then I'd say that they're only missing an MLB team. Dames
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Are we at the point where the Jets and Giants count for both New Jersey AND New York?
Guest CanadianChris Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Well, the Redskins play in Maryland and count for DC. Besides, the topic says city/AREA, not just city.
Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted June 12, 2003 The difference with the Giants & Jets is that they play in an area that has other teams. If the Redskins played in Baltimore, then I would count them as a Baltimore team. But for teams like them and the Patriots, the closest sports centre is the place where they are supposed to be from. Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted June 13, 2003 I heard they're building a new Giants Stadium and leaving the Jets in the Meadowlands. Then we could have NY Giants/NJ Jets. Also, I like "Boston Patriots" over "New England Patriots" because of the intended historical merit. It would be like making the Chicago Fire the Great Lakes Fire. Devalues the cleverness.
