a Story of Nathan Jones

Thanks to Richard Meaden in Melbourne, Australia for sending the following report of Nathan Jones' appearance on the Australian version of 60 Minutes.

Tonight 60 Minutes did a good 15 minute story on the new Australian WWE wrestler Nathan Jones and his rise from a Brisbane jail to an American superstar.

The interview was conducted by Liz Hayes and took place prior to this years Wrestlemania. Nathan claimed he was 6ft 10, 300 pounds and growing. His body mass was attributed to hard training not steroids as he was shown lifting massive weights of over 100 kg in the gym.

He spent 7 years in a Brisbane cell for 8 armed robberies. Footage was shown of a parliamentary inquiry into which he testified that he would take a lethal cocktail of drugs and amphetamines before doing a job which would make him feel invincible. He likened the dose to suiciding knowing that he would be sent to prison but he was so frustrated and angry that he had to self destruct.

Vince McMahon was interviewed and said that he found Jones to be a charming individual like most Australians and that he was perfect to market because he came with his own storyline. He named him the "Colossus of Boggo Road" which was where the former prison in Brisbane was located. He said that, like himself, Jones had made mistakes and he had had to pay for them.

A history of Jones was shown revealing he was named the World's Strongest Man in 1995. He would terrify the officers in the jail by ripping the doors off the hinges and related the story of his arrest in which the police officer was shaking as he threatened to shoot him as he felt intimidated by his size. Jones then leaned forward to Liz and claimed he said "If you are going to shoot me, shoot me right between the eyes then". The officer eventually received backup from other officers and Jones said he felt bewildered that all these weapons pointed at him were there for his arrest.

Liz then interviewed Tom Green, Jones' trainer and we were shown a group of green kids going through the basics of wrestling. He claimed Jones was the molded perfection of what a wrestler should look like.

Vince than said that the business was a form of entertainment allowing the crowd to cheer the good guy and boo the bad and that wrestlers cannot be boring people. (Why does he still allow A-Train to wrestle then??)

The story finished with Jones's kick to The Big Show and foot in the face to A-Train to allow Taker and himself to win the match at Wrestlemania. Jones was finally asked about a movie career and Liz compared him to Arnie saying "all you have to say is 'I'll Be Back'". Jones then looked into the camera saying these immortal lines with a goofy grin and the story ended.

All up the interview showed Jones to be a friendly giant of a man but with not much intelligence such as the Rock's or Ric Flair's interviews with Rove McManus (our local Jay Leno). He reminded me a lot of Cleetus the slack jawed yokel from the Simpsons, but as a fellow Aussie I hope to see him getting back into the mix on Smackdown. I would prefer to see him on Raw as that is the only program we get on pay TV now.

I saw it too. The guy came across as being a total dumbfuck, and they of course had to make mention of the ASTOUNDING fact that even though wrestling isn't real *gasp* the fans still pay to see it *double gasp*.

Liz Hayes sucks, she hardly took it seriously. That's why Rove is good with interviews, because he loves it.

Did they have footage from the World's Strongest Man competition when he broke his arm vs Magnus during an arm wrestling match?

Tom Green is his trainer? No wonder Jones sucks as a wrestler!

ESPN shows constant reruns of the World's Strongest Man, and I remember Nathan Jones getting injuried more than once..............brittle bones due to steroids :hm: ?

If he took "a lethal cocktail of drugs and amphetamines " than what is stopping him from taking performance enhancing drugs?

That was him? God, that looked brutal.

I would have also much rathered someone like Rove do the interview, even if he annoys the hell out of me.

Crowe and Jones, two great Australian Ambassador's.
