Dr. Tom's St. Anger review

Recommended Posts

Guest CoreyLazarus416

Hey, Tom, this might go in Site Feedback, but fuck it. Pretty good review of the album, even if I don't agree with a lot of the ratings (I think "Dirty Window" should have gotten a 7/10, and the overall album more of a 5/10, personally). I also liked how you went into different aspects of Metallica, such as the "selling out" thing.

I'd copy & paste the article here, but not without Tom's permission.

Agreed...my only real issue was that every song was about 2 minutes too long considering there were no solos...the only song I really skip over is Invisible Kid, i just hate that song. "Falling through the grid" is horrible writing at it's finest, I shudder on that part everytime for some reason...

Tom, you should've added some of the other TSM'ers opinions on it. Like, random quotes about it. AoO's comments on it would be funny ("Metallica sucks anyways"), and others quotes (**cough, cough**MYSELF**cough, cough**) would help show off how disappointing this album is to some.

I thought about it. But considering how controversial Metallica has become in recent years -- for "selling out" and for their anti-Napsterism -- I think it's obvious that opinions are going to be mixed on it. I don't think the CD itself is anything great (though it is decent, and deserves a fair listen), but the Vault content rocks and makes the whole package very much worth buying.

-- since you said you enjoyed load, i would be interested to find out how you would rate that album.

i agree with you 100% that sometimes people grow older and evolve and aren't the same angry 20somethings that they used to be BUT that doesn't mean that the music is still enjoyable. personally, my use for metallica left after listening to the black album. i understand that they grew up but that doesn't mean i have to accept the fact.

That's fine. Anyone who doesn't like a band's music, particularly if they think the music has changed for the worse, should stop listening. My problem is that everyone heard a different sound, immediately shouted "OMG SELLOUTZ~!" at the top of their lungs, and have rarely quieted since. People change, and the way they express themselves in their chosen artistic medium will change with them. Listen if you like it, stop listening if you don't, but don't bitch and moan and wail about it.

Probably an 8 or an 8.5. My copy is fucked up and doesn't play anything past track 5, so it's been a while since I've heard it. The only song I could take or leave on there is "Wasting My Hate." All the others are rock solid. A lot of the unreleased songs are excellent: "2x4" has a great riff (and who HASN'T wanted to bash someone upside the head with a 2x4 at some point?), "Ronnie" manages to be heavy enough and catchy, and "Outlaw Torn" is simply tremendous.

i don't have a problem with any band selling out. personally, you could dress me up in polyester and throw me together with 4 other rejects in some boy band for the amount of money they are making. for me, the loss of interest in metallica wasn't from a personal standpoint but a musical one. the first 4 albums (hell, even the original garage days) were less commercially successfulk than the 90's tripe but nowhere near the level of the 80's metal classics. also, those albums could have 8-9 minute songs throughout and make it work! it doesn't surprise me they can't do the same thing now.

Tom...I think I'm disappointed. You said you got the CD for $10? Whatever happened to your principle of never buying another CD again?? :P

And from METALLICA, of all bands. "Carrot-up-the-ass corporate bitch" Lars?? Oh, crikey...

You can't really argue with the pricing of the album, as it was only 12.99 in Canada at Future Shop, and the Metallica Vault alone is worht far more than that. That aside, it was a decent album I though. Different, not really what I would expect from Metallica, but decent.

I love "Invisible Kid" the "open your eyes I'm breathing right here" part is freakin awesome.

It's one of the few songs on the album that doesn't become grating after awhile. Most of the songs on the album go on longer than they should and overstay their welcome. "Invisible Kid" I can listen to all the way through.

I hate Dirty Window. There are too many tempo changes and the words to that song are some of the worst on the album I think.

I'm much the same. Whereas I have no trouble listening to any song the entire way through, I enjoy 'Invisible Kid' just as much as any other song on the album.

Personal favourite - All Within My Hands. Metallica is always good on the openers and closers of their albums.

y'know, as a music review, i think that was probably the best music review of an album that i have seen on the net. that includes anything that popped up on 411 music, all muic guide and mos def better than anything that-idiot-keith ever wrote concerning music.

if this were the movies folder i would say the same about O.R. Polk's BATTLE ROYALE review. just great reading.

Okay, I read the review despite what I said in my first post. I was curious. And I have to say this:

Tom, you fucking idiot! You MORON! You complete nitwit, you gasbag, you insufferable poltroon! It's "We the People," not "We The People."

It depends on whether you think “we the people” or “We The People” when you hear those words sung, I guess.

Twit.

No.

And why does the "carrot-up-the-ass corporate bitch Lars" comment sound familiar?

Metallia - St. Anger

anyone else notice that?

that must have been dames updating the forums because it is correct in the actual review. then agan, dames was too busy listening to his old boysIImen cd's so he prolly wasn't paying attention to the small stuff for some old metal band.

I believe the operative word you're looking for is "true."

Load (which is a tremendous album, in my opinion, and is criminally shortchanged by naysayers who like to carp that it’s “too commercial”) featured the band really broadening their horizons. The heavy rock was there, but they experimented with more acoustic guitars in their music, even playing a song (“Mama Said”) that sounded eerily close to country.

I couldn't agree with you more, Tom. Load was a terrific album with a lot of really great songs on it. It's definitely a change of pace from the previous albums, but in a good way. I don't think it made them sell out or anything.

As far as selling out goes, I've never considered Metallica as "selling out". I've always felt that they can play whatever the heck they want ... if I don't like it, it doesn't mean they're corporate whores because of it.

In my opinion, St. Anger sucks. Terribly. The only reason I'd get it right now is because of the unlocking code for the Metallica vault to get the old material live recordings. The music is far too repetetive, the lyrics are vapid, and the lack of solos is really disappointing.

In conclusion, it's great that (like in Load) they're trying a new style ... it's unfortunate that they suck at it.

No need to buy it when you can download the Vault content so far for free here anyway. I'm sure if they bother to put some new stuff up you'll easily be able to find that elsewhere too. Don't waste your money on this stinker like I did.

Hogwash! Aside from the black album, this is probably the worst thing they've ever produced. Shitpoprock tracks like Fuel, King Nothing, and Hero of the Day, mixed with lazy rock songs like Ain't my Bitch, mixed with turds in "branching out's" clothing like Mama Said.

An absolutely unforgivably terrible recording completely devoid of a good track, good riff, or vocal part.

And now, for my stellar, stunning and well thought out response ...

I like it. Bite me. Oh, and Fuel's on ReLoad.

Meh. Can we at least agree that Master of Puppets is their awesomest album?
