Guest godthedog Report post Posted June 22, 2003 Winning it at Unforgiven was perfect, but I don't really understand Austin winning it back two weeks later. I'm sure they could have built a story line around him until Survivor Series. Angle would have had more heat on him as heel if he sold-out and took the belt with him to the Alliance. But I suppose that would rule out the ironic finish to the SS match. Ah well. Next week's 6 man should be good. after SS, his character got mishandled and most of his momentum as a babyface slowly diminished. summerslam did too good a job of building that "the time is NOW" feeling. he had all the fresh face momentum in the world going into it, and it was his best singles match ever up to that point. the unforgiven title reign just didn't *feel* right. the match had something missing, and nobody really bought angle as champion. the 10/8 raw basically had to be done to correct their mistake. The reign itself, where he did nothing but get beat up and job, didn't help matters
Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2003 doesn't change the fact that he's a much better face. I've always liked Benoit better as a heel, buys you more into his "I'm gonna kick your ass" mood. Same with Lesnar, I really liked him when he was the unstoppable monster, now he's all nice and shit, fuck that!
Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2003 after SS, his character got mishandled and most of his momentum as a babyface slowly diminished I always love hearing Medal play and seeing fans jump out of their seats and cheer, you could see hear it and hear it throughout the arena. I mean it really shocked me that eh managed to go over because it didn't work the first time which made Angle go to his heel status during 2000. Now Medal plays and people chant "You Suck!", I hate that shit.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted June 22, 2003 the crowd was most firmly behind him from invasion to summerslam. after that, the writers tried to turn him into another steve austin (with the milk truck and the kidnapping and what not), which was totally unfitting to his character; not only because it went against what angle had been about before, but because it was derivative and angle himself couldn't really pull it off. I've always liked Benoit better as a heel, buys you more into his "I'm gonna kick your ass" mood. lots of people here enjoy him as a heel more, but historically he's been more over as a face. Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2003 the writers tried to turn him into another steve austin (with the milk truck and the kidnapping and what not) The Milk Truck was better than the original! As for Benoit, there have been few times I've seen him as face, but then again, I've never seen Benoit before he was in WCW.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted June 22, 2003 Benoits two biggest matches in the WWE (vs. Austin SMDWN01, vs Angle RR03) came when he was a face. The crowd was totally into him in his match w. Sullivan at GAB96 as well.
Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2003 I know, I'm just saying its rare for him to be a face, I like much better as a heel, but I guess its get nowhere with that since you posted above with the crowd reaction.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted June 22, 2003 It's rare because the WWE clearly doesn't know how to use him as a face. Vince: But but but he doesn't cut promos! He isn't charismatic! He gets over by wrestling! We can't have that! HHH: I agree. This gratuitous HHH implication has been brought to you today by Cheetos: Cheetos: Dangerously Cheesy! Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2003 Vince: But but but he doesn't cut promos! He isn't charismatic! He gets over by wrestling! We can't have that! Why is it all the guys who can actually wrestle are the ones who get held back? I don't get it.
Guest The Hamburglar Report post Posted June 23, 2003 Benoit was over as a heel when he went around putting hugely popular midcard faces in the Crossface for hours on end and generally being heinously evil. Problem is, there aren't any hugely popular midcard faces anymore, not like back then. Regardless of their talent whatever, a heel could get far more heat off the likes of Rikishi, Too Cool, Chyna, the Hardyz, Lita, the Dudleyz etc back in 2000-2001 than any midcard face other than maybe Rey could command now. And the Rock and Jericho were great face foils for getting heel Benoit over.
King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted June 23, 2003 Well, I have to agree with AS. I like goofy Angle. Goofy Angle is funny. This is beyond goofy. I mean they have him come out and say he likes the You Suck chants, just so the fans can keep them going. They have him saying freaking in the wrong situations. To be honest, I hate face Angle. Angle is better as a heel because he can be goofy and not seem like he's trying too hard. I mean 'I represent right freaking now'? That had me cringing. He needs an edge like around Summerslam 2001. That's about the only time I cared about face Angle. Including now. Although Haas/Benjamin vs Angle isn't a bad thing.
