Guest 5_moves_of_doom Report post Posted June 23, 2003 AC/DC, simply because I know they'll lose anyway... and while Zeppelin is CLEARLY the superior band, I don't really consider them "Metal" or "Hard Rock." Black Sabbath... Metallica has just not been able to get me going for... forever, it seems.

Guest benoitrulz4life Report post Posted June 23, 2003 Not "all" of their stuff is hard, especially their latter albums. But listen to their first two albums and certain tracks off of their later ones (When the Levee Breaks, No Quarter) and that's pretty hard stuff. Just listen to the opening riff from "Heartbreaker". That is the very definition of hard rock: a loud, driven, and crushing form of the blues.

Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted June 24, 2003 You want a riff that explains hard rock, and all of heavy music for that matter? The open riff of Motörhead - "Love For Sale." Raunchy, bluesy, heavy, distorted, fast.

Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 24, 2003 Sabbath also had "hey guys, wanna play some D&D?" as their vocalist. If Dio just played DnD, and didn't sing, I wouldn't mind the guy one bit. Tony Martin was far far worse. They totally lost their chemistry post-Ozzy, and while Iommi still had the riffs, they just didn't fit with the singing fantasy nerds on parade. Stuff like TYR (Martin) and Mob Rules are incredibly bad albums, but no worse than Reload or Ride the Lightning.
Guest benoitrulz4life Report post Posted June 24, 2003 AoO, wasn't that barbarian in your sig actually on a commercial for the library/dewey decimal system? I seem to vaguely remember one with him in it, but I'm not sure. Also, I was thinking about doing a death metal/black metal tourney after this one, but I don't think anyone would vote. Any supporters for one out there? If so, I was hoping AoO would help me out with the candidates. Here's who I have: Atheist Cancer Cannibal Corpse Cradle of Filth Deicide Emperor Entombed In Flames Malevolent Creation Mayhem Morbid Angel My Dying Bride Obituary Paradise Lost Therion Tiamat Any help on keepers or losers? Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 24, 2003 A death band tourney? Hm, well, considering there's about half a dozen people on here that listen to it, I question the logic, but if I were to make a list.. Nile Dying Fetus Cryptopsy Cannibal Corpse Nasum Mastodon Malevolent Creation Morbid Angel Nunslaughter The Berzerker Mortician Death Synnichrosis Cephalic Carnage Avulsed (just so cheesy gore gets represented equally) Satyricon That's off the top of my head, pretty much, so I probably forgot someone. I threw in a few grind bands that do more blast and groove-based stuff, but still essentially build off brutal death..
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 24, 2003 Also, Conan the Librarian is featured in the classic 1989 film UHF, starring none other than Weird Al, and featuring Michael Richards.
Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Report post Posted June 24, 2003 If this is death metal and black metal, then toss in Dimmu Borgir.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 24, 2003 Well, if we're talking black metal, then Goatwhore must be mentioned since they're the only good american black metal band. Dimmu's pretty iffy, if not downright bad, I think. Really terrible live. Essentially a heavier version of Cradle of Filth, with a bad habit of getting samey. I dig the grittier more evil side of black metal as opposed to the overblown orchestrations and stuff. I'll take Venom over, say...Emperor any day of the week, but some folks are into the violins, red wine, and oohs and aahs, I guess.
Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Report post Posted June 24, 2003 I'm not much of a black metal afficianado, but I prefer the more orchestral stuff. And I never really thought of Venom as a black metal band, although they did invent the term. They seemed like just a straight up thrash band to me.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted June 24, 2003 Ah, Venom. They were Black Metal before Black Metal existed. I mean, look at the basics of Black Metal: Standard tuning, corpsepaint, black leather, GAUNTS, screeched vocals, lyrics about Satan and hating God. Venom did all of this. Kinda funny how NWOBHM started every form of metal known today, eh? Thrash, death, power, black, doom... Agent, ever heard of Absu? They're a Texas-based black metal band. Pretty good stuff, too. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 24, 2003 waitwaitwait..there's ANOTHER good American black metal band? I'll believe it when I hear it. Mental note on Absu.
Guest Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye Report post Posted June 24, 2003 Did someone say black metal? Agent, do more than take a mental note on ABSU. Definitely worth checking out and pretty original in their approach. I could give you a pretty impressive list of more Orchestral blackness to go on an unholy crusade for. If you're initerested. Total protoype of the modern style of black metal that didn't rely on keyboards or frills. That and Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk is the best album of the 90's. As far as a death/black tourney goes I think the list of bands in this thread is pretty tight although it NEEDS TO INCLUDE SUFFOCATION.

Guest Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye Report post Posted June 25, 2003 La Parka Es Mi Papa Posted on Jun 24 2003, 03:59 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- QUOTE I could give you a pretty impressive list of more Orchestral blackness to go on an unholy crusade for. If you're initerested. I'd dig it. Ok, here we go then. All the info is taken from blackmetal.com The order goes Band name, and then album name, and then description. Aborym - Kali Yuga Bizarre. Highly imaginative & progressive Melodic Black Metal from Italy featuring TORMENTOR's Attila Csihar on vocals (also lead-vocalist on MAYHEM's cult classic "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" album!)... Hard to believe, but ABORYM blast forth with a successful blending of Emperor's "Anthems To the Welkin at Dusk" & Cradle of Filth's most inspired moments! Check it out for yourself, if you're curious and/or adventurous! Superbly unique, and extreme Black Metal art with various and original influences / atmospheres! Reaping extraordinary reviews everywhere! Import from Italy (on SPV / Scarlet Records) -- Agalloch - Pale Folklore (new album is The Mantle) Dark & luxurious Melodic Black/Dark Metal from Portland (Oregon) on The End Records; excellent Gothik Doom comparable to Metal Blade's IN RUINS! The End Records says: 'Pale Folklore' features 8 songs at a total running-time of over 62 minutes! Very elaborate & diverse; surrounded by the majesty of nature & the burden of human existence, this album bursts with melodies based in dark, yet very emotional concepts. Creating auras of dark, symphonic melancholia, 'Pale Folklore' turns out to be one of the most tragic & mournful, yet expressive listening experiences ever! -- Agathodaimon - The Higher Art Of Rebellion. AGATHODAIMON's second album presenting more high-calibre Nordic-styled German Black Metal with raging dynamics, darkly racing atmosphere, grim vocalist Vlad (from Rumania!), clean vocals by Byron, & lots of dense keyboards! "A Higher Art of Rebellion" was recorded in Romania! Released in 1999 on Nuclear Blast, Germany! -- Amorphis - Elegy Classic release on Relapse from 1996. Widely regarded as one of the best heavy metal releases of 1996, "Elegy" is a wondrous mix of Euro-styled death metal combined with a healthy infusion of folk melodies, psychedelic guitar, and magnificent keyboards. The lyrical source for "Elegy" is the Kanteletar; the Kanteletar is comprised of more than 700 poems that detail Finnish folklore. Some of the poems are more than a thousand years old; the legendary stories of the Kanteletar inspire Amorphis to new heights as the hopes, desires, and philosophies of the Finnish people are woven into majestic and emotional tales. TRACK LISTING: 1. Better Unborn 2. Against Widows 3. The Orphan 4. On Rich and Poor 5. My Kantele 6. Cares 7. Song Of The Troubled One 8. Weeper On The Shore 9. Elegy 10. Relief 11. My Kantele (acoustic reprise) -- Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY ME!!!) Long-awaited ARCTURUS release featuring Ihsahn of EMPEROR, Hellhammer (MAYHEM, TROLL, KOVENANT), and Trickster G (aka Garm from ULVER). The wait is finally over... A new ARCTURUS album is here to spin your minds and speakers! Undisputably one of Extreme Metal's most-wanted albums since the release of "La Masquerade Infernale", a genre-pushing absurd carnival released by Music For Nations in 1997. "The Sham Mirrors" has gone a long way towards completion, mainly due to the band members' engagements in other projects. Trickster G. has been busy exploring the calmer waters of oblivion in his band ULVER as well as establishing and profiling Jester Records, while Hellhammer has battered drum-kits for MAYHEM, THE KOVENANT, TROLL, IMMORTAL, and other Blackened outfits! At last the pieces have been put together, two years after the band laid down the first tracks! One Black Metal track also featuring EMPEROR's Ihsahn as a guest-vocalist. The result is a paramount puzzle; "The Sham Mirrors" is a circus of symphony and technology, progressive rock and classical metal, all in a darkly tinged whole. Definitely along the now-classic lines of the epic & majestically celestial "Aspera Heims Symfonia" with a bit of the inventive "Las Masquerade infernale" progression added to the mix! Do not miss this long-awaited classic! Out in April 2002, on the band's own label Ad Astra Enterprises, Norway! * ARCTURUS LINE-UP: Trickster G. - vocals Knut M. Valle - guitars Steinar Sverd Johnsen - keyboards Dag F. Gravem - bass Hellhammer Von Blomberg - drums + Guest Musicians: Ihsahn (EMPEROR) - Lead Black Metal vocals on ''Radical Cut'' (track# 6) Mathias Eick (Jaga Jazzist) - Horn on various tracks * TRACK-LIST: 1. Kinetic (5:25) 2. Nightmare Heaven (6:05) 3. Ad Absurdum (6:48) 4. Collapse Generation (4:12) 5. Star-Crossed (5:01) 6. Radical Cut (5:08) 7. For To End Yet Again (10:34) Total running-time: 43:20 * DISCOGRAPHY: Asperia Hiems Symfonia (1996) Las Masquerade Infernale (1997) Disguised Masters, re-mix (1999) The Sham Mirrors (2002) -- Borknagar - Olden Domain(The new album Empiricism is fucking AMAZING!) Epic Norwegian Metal of the Blackest might from the talents of Garm (ARCTURUS, ULVER), Ivar (ENSLAVED, DESEKRATOR), Grim (r.i.p. ex-IMMORTAL, GORGOROTH), & Oystein Brun (MOLESTED)-- their classic & essential second (2nd.) album from 1996-'97 blending Nordic Black Metal & heroic Viking atmosphere! Century Black USA. -- The Kovenant - Nexus Polaris Ex-Dimmu Borgir's Nagash (also in Troll); their second album as COVENANT (aka The Kovenant), their first for Nuclear Blast! Norwegian Grammy winners, twice! Progressive Goth-oriented Norwegian Electro-Metal featuring Cradle of Filth's Sara Jezebel Deva (now with Mortiis!)... -- Dissection - The Somberlain(highly recommended) RE-ISSUE! The Swedish legends' debut album, now given a proper domestic release in North America. The black/death metal milestone that stunned the underground in 1993 and became a blueprint that many others would attempt to follow for years to come. One of the original and best purveyors of Swedish Death/Black Metal. Featuring Jon Nodveidt (THE BLACK, early WAR; see also brother Emil in SWORDMASTER!), plus current members of SOUL REAPER, & RUNEMAGICK! DISSECTION's now-classic & definitely ESSENTIAL debut-album ''The Somberlain'' is without a doubt DISSECTION's finest hour! An excellent example of the highest calibre mix of talent & finesse without forsaking or compromising darkness, rage & brutality! TRACK LISTING: Black Horizons The Somberlain Crimson Towers A Land Forlorn Heaven's Damnation Frozen Into Infinite Obscenity Th eCold Winds Of Nowhere The Grief Prophecy Shadows Over A Lost Kingdom Mistress of the Bleeding Sorrow Feathers Fell -- Enslaved - Monumension(BUY EVERYTHING FROM THIS BAND TWICE OVER!) Limited-Edition album with bonus-track in CD SLIPCASE! ENSLAVED's much-anticipated 2002 album! Packaged in jewel-case with outer slipcase, complete with thick booklet featuring Lyrics & instructions for a ritual! * LINE-UP: Dirge Rep (ex-GEHENNA) - Percussion & effects; Ivar Bjørnson - Guitars, Synths, Hammond, Piano & effects; R. Kronhiem - Rhythm & Lead guitars, vocals & effects; Grutle Kjellson - vocals & bass. * Bonus-Track is by the band HOV with vocalist Trygve Mathiesen (who also contributes lead-vocals on ENSLAVED's "Hollow Inside") entitled "Sigmundskvadet" which is [the closest approximation of] authentic traditional "Viking Music"! Import CD from OSMOSE Productions, France! -- Gehenna - First Spell RARE Import on Head Not Found! GEHENNA's cult debut on Head Not Found Records Norway! Classic early Norwegian Black Metal from the ''Modern'' era [i.e., preceded by the prior advances of Darkthrone, Mayhem, Immortal, & Burzum] with a raw darkness, cold atmosphere, melodic keyboards, grim vocal cries! Basic presentation with much conviction for fresh, original, & simpler times! -- Satyricon - Dark Medievil Times(RECOMMENDED!!) SATYRICON (Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven, Frost, Kveldulv, etc.) now-classic & essential debut-album of melodic, atmospheric Norwegian Black Metal with strong influences of stirring Viking feelings! Import from Norway on Moonfog Records! -- Ehh, that should get you started pretty well. Whether or not you like them all or none of them is not worrying to me right now. Just spreading the dark gospel.
