Black Sabbath... Metallica has just not been able to get me going for... forever, it seems.

But listen to their first two albums and certain tracks off of their later ones (When the Levee Breaks, No Quarter) and that's pretty hard stuff. Just listen to the opening riff from "Heartbreaker". That is the very definition of hard rock: a loud, driven, and crushing form of the blues.

If Dio just played DnD, and didn't sing, I wouldn't mind the guy one bit. Tony Martin was far far worse. They totally lost their chemistry post-Ozzy, and while Iommi still had the riffs, they just didn't fit with the singing fantasy nerds on parade. Stuff like TYR (Martin) and Mob Rules are incredibly bad albums, but no worse than Reload or Ride the Lightning.

Dimmu's pretty iffy, if not downright bad, I think. Really terrible live. Essentially a heavier version of Cradle of Filth, with a bad habit of getting samey. I dig the grittier more evil side of black metal as opposed to the overblown orchestrations and stuff. I'll take Venom over, say...Emperor any day of the week, but some folks are into the violins, red wine, and oohs and aahs, I guess.

I mean, look at the basics of Black Metal: Standard tuning, corpsepaint, black leather, GAUNTS, screeched vocals, lyrics about Satan and hating God. Venom did all of this. Kinda funny how NWOBHM started every form of metal known today, eh? Thrash, death, power, black, doom... Agent, ever heard of Absu? They're a Texas-based black metal band. Pretty good stuff, too.

Total protoype of the modern style of black metal that didn't rely on keyboards or frills. That and Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk is the best album of the 90's. As far as a death/black tourney goes I think the list of bands in this thread is pretty tight although it NEEDS TO INCLUDE SUFFOCATION.
