Was Jerichos prime in WCW?

Recommended Posts

Guest DarkHollywood

I Can't pass judgement since I didn't watch Nitro a lot, but i'd say his promos were a LOT better and funnier in WCW.

Match wise, I'd say WWF/E since I didn't watch enough wCW.

BTW...

What PPV was it where Jericho imitated Goldbergs entrance and got lost for abour 3-4 minutes? I remember seeing that a while back but forgot.

Haha...just skimmed the list, but the part that stuck out was:

877 - Palm Thrust

878 - Palm Thrust Flurry

HAHAHA.

Look, the Hulkster's been making my point out about the actual quality of Jericho's matches. Before I actually mentioned the whole match thing, not a single answer in this thread had actually praised any of Jericho's matches or singled out examples of quality in-ring work. You can talk about rather forgettable matches with Malenko or Rey, but the fact is that as far as his actual wrestling goes, Jericho has a far greater amount of good, memorable matches in his WWE run. As has been pointed out, the Benoit ladder match? All of his series with Rock? The Last Man Standing and the fake title switch with Triple H? Hell, in the WWF/E Jericho has actively carried RVD and Goldberg to possibly the best matches I've seen out of them, and he was able to carry Hogan to his best match since he came back at NWO 2002. And of course there's the vaunted tag match he had with Benoit vs Austin/Triple H. If he has WCW work that compares to all this, please enlighten me.

Not to mention he had to come to the WWF to win the WCW title.

I recently came across an old episode of Nitro during the Jericho-Malenko feud. I don't remember the exact quote, but it went something like this:

Jericho: "Your father was on the road, working day in and day out to earn a living. So, have you ever wondered why you and your brother look nothing alike?"

I remember that!! That was in the Malenko/Jericho feud, and at that point Malenko couldn't touch Jericho or he'd be suspended, or not get another title shot - one of the two.

I loved a lot of Jericho's WCW work - the Mysterio/Jericho match really stands out in my mind, from Bash at the Beach 98. Jericho had planned to come out and do a tap dance routine since he didn't have an opponent because Malenko had been suspended, until "Joe Joe" came out and said he had found someone, but they hadn't wrestled in a few months.

Enter the returning Mysterio.

By the way, I'm new. Hope to interact with you all on many occasions :)

Sometimes, when he would have an in ring interview with Okerlund or Schiavone, he'd start by saying,

"Gene Mean, you address me by my proper name . . . Lionheart Chris Jericho, Man of 1,004 Holds, Hero, Icon, Ayatollah of Rock and Rollah, and Paragon of Virtue for the entire free world!"

Just another fond WCW Jericho memory.

Man...WWE needs to AT LEAST let him have his nicknames back...

He only has "Vitamin C" and "Hi-Lite of the Night" these days...

Another great thing about WCW Jericho is that, despite wrestling being in an Era of Attitude at the time, I don't believe Jericho EVER cussed. Not a damn, not a hell, not a son of a bitch. I think if anything, this helped his heel heat since fans loved to pop for naughty words.

What are you talking about? Those were his best matches / feuds. They're are made him the great classic heel that he is!

not a son of a bitch

He called HBK a stupid S.O.B. after he gave him a chairshot and challenged him to the WM match. I dunno what he said, but he did cuss tonight during the Highlight Reel. But yeah, I don't ever remember hearing him cuss during his WCW days.

Jericho was cussing aloud during his match with Benoit at Super J Cup 95, which was before WCW. So, if he cussed before and after WCW, odds are that he wasn't completely clean in WCW either.

I was just guessing/hoping he made it a point not to cuss during his heel run to garner some heel heat the sophisticated way. Bah, who knows?

I'd just like to throw out a "HBK is a great wrestler" as a response to whatever Mighty is saying. :)

What the fuck does that have to do with anything? That was a debate that happened about what? 4 months ago???? You're not funny or cute kid.

Nah...Jericho let a few loose but mostly tame shit like

"What in the hell is the matter with you" towards Rhalpus

"Where is the Damn Arena?" To Rhalpus when he couldn't find the ring (somthing SOMEONE needs to steal Rhalpus and the getting lost gimmick)

it's interesting to think he RARELY uttered a cuss when in WWF

He did about 24827435 variations of the word "Slut" and utters Hell in every promo

I feel he's had more memoreable matches in the WWE which has a lot to do with his position on the card. He is usually placed on the top 3-4 matces in the WWE. His promos were great in both places, but I would give the nod to his WCW tenure. He had a lot of great matches in WCW but their wasn't as much significance placed on them. He had a great match with Juvy at Superbrawl, Bash at the Beach with Dragon, had and incredible match with Guerrero at Fall Brawl 97, His match with Benoit at Fall Brawl 96, His feud with Malenko produced several good matches, along with several matches on Nitro with Konnan, Booker-T, Misterio, Kidman, Benoit, and the like. Overall, he's been agreat performer everywhere he has been.
