Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted June 23, 2003 What is with Greg Maddux almost literally never using Javy Lopez has is catcher? He's had around 4 personal catchers. Even when Javy was in his early years and a GREAT hitter (much like this year), Maddux stuck to Eddie Perez (and later Paul Bako), screwing Bobby Cox who was forced to bench Javy. The guy is a great pitcher, or WAS, but he does things like never use Javy, takes himself out of games for no reason, whines and complains about everything. Bobby Cox has stated before that he likes to switch catchers occasionally and not burn them out. It is true that Maddux isn't the fondest of Lopez's catching (even though he did win a Cy Young with him) and Maddux is pretty finicky with the way he pitches. I agree on the front of Javy's defense. Half the time, he positions himself outside the strike zone - though that's seemed better this year. He's not the greatest at blocking pitches, nor does he seem to want to block the plate, as evidenced tonight when he took himself out of good position to make a tag after a nice throw by Sheffield. The Mets OWN Maddux. Besides, him i have no problems with any other Brave except Chipper Jones (due to Met Hostility ). Think about that for a second. They lost because he didn't play? They lost by seven runs. Henry Blanco was 0-3, hitting once with a man on base. If Lopez had hit 3 Home Runs, the Braves still would've lost that game. Catchers need games off occasionally, or otherwise they'll burn out. Keeping him out one game in five is a good way to keep Lopez healthy. I do question the wisdom of having Darren Bragg pinch hit however, when Lopez is the hottest hitter on the team. Too bad they could not use a DH in the game. Javy would of made a difference if he did play, if the guy was having a good week they should of let him play.
