Acclaim done with Gamecube

Recommended Posts

Guest bps "The Truth" 21

Yet another publisher ditches the purple front

Acclaim has no plans to publish more games on the GameCube after their current announced projects, citing the system to be an unprofitable business venture.

Said Acclaim CEO Rod Cousens: "Why are we to develop games for platforms that do not supply appropriate yields? We still support PS2 and Xbox, but Nintendo? No, not in the foreseeable future. "

Acclaim's GameCube support will end once Legends Of Wrestling III, Urban Freestyle Soccer, and XGRA are released, and Alias, NBA Jam 2004, and Gladiator are unlikely to grace the Nintendo console.

Now...I can't tell you the last time Acclaim made a good game...but hey...Sega pulled their sports and now Acclaim is done too.

My GCN has been collecting dust the past few months anyway. And like BPS said, Acclaim hasn't done anything all that great lately.

No skin off my back.

That's no big loss.

Those titles sound shitty, anyways.

It's important to point out that, while Cousens' words were damning, MCV are alleged to have taken his words out of context.

Acclaim's official line is that they have NOT pulled support, and will review GameCube development based on the individual title. Hence, while I have no doubt that the company has largely abandoned ship, profitable franchises such as Legends of Wrestling will continue to be developed for the format.

I'm sure MCV and GamesPress will have a follow-up on this shortly. Just thought it was important to know the full story.

Nooo!! Without Acclaim, who will make huge piles of extremely shitty games for the Gamecube destined for bargain bins? Who will bring us those godawful licensed games? Who will bring us lame-ass rehashes of once fresh and innovative concepts?

Will some one think of the children?!

Fuck Acclaim, they suck. Better off without 'em.

Nintendo's fault for making a system with little discs and blurry graphics :P

I'm getting an X-Box soon :headbang:

Seriously, word is Playstation 3, and any new console for that matter, won't be out for another 3-4 years. X-Box is the best bet.

Gamecude doesn't have blurry graphics. It has tiny artifacts in the FMV that most game sites act like is th end of all greatness. "I saw a artifact...this game sucks.." The Cube has much better graphics than the Playstation 2 IMO. Now the X-box...no contest...of course its bigger than my DVD player and VCR so it better be able to do something.

Agreed. GCN can survive without AckLame as 3rd party support. Heck, this might hurt PS2 and XBox more than it helps them...

The artifacting doesn't bother me either. Eternal Darkness' FMVs are littered with them and they still looked incredible. Shame it didn't sell though.

I wish I knew. I wish AcKLame would go out of business although I know most of the people who dream up the horrible games would float to the ground on their golden parachutes.

AckLame has no quality control department. Who'd of thunk it, eh?

FWIW, Burnout 2 is a good game (especially on Xbox) in spite of the Acclaim logo on it's cover.

Well, I guess Acclaim DID technically go out of business once already, hence the current situation.

Well, Acclaim has it's many horrible development houses, but they are also a publisher/distributor. So an Acclaim logo on a game doesn't mean an Acclaim development house actually made the game.

The point wasnt' really how bad Acclaim is. (and boy are they ever)...

the point is as bad as they are...Gamecube is deemed beneath them.

Anyone know why Acclaim slapped their logo on Crazy Taxi?

Because in-house studio Acclaim Cheltenham (YES! Gloucestershire represent!) did the conversion.

Acclaim thinking anyone else on the planet is possibly beneath them = irony funny haha

Aside from Legends of Wrestling which only three people like anyway, who the hell cares if Acclaim never develops or publishes another title again? The only decent thing they ever did was the 16-bit WWF games (handled by LJN) and NBA Jam (when it was done by Iguana), so hey.

I realized that ASB 2004 is from Acclaim. Its a pretty good game but I wouldn't have bought it had I had some sort of choice in baseball games on the cube. The only other game is Midways crappy game and the non licensed Crushed baseball..

I also have LOW2 and they screwed up Andy Kaufman.

If Acclaim actually made decent games, I might care. As it stands, I don't, and Im pretty sure that there are very few Gamecube owners who are mourning the loss either.

Gamecube owners are notoriously anti-3rd party. We don't like 3rd party crap. Give us good titles and we'll buy them. Most 3rd parties just push crap.

And about the next gen consoles..

XBox 2 is coming in 2006.

The PS2.5 (What Im calling it, the one with the Video Recording, built in hard drive and other upgrades to the PS2) is coming out next year, but the PS3 is also scheduled for 2006.

I've heard rumors that Nintendo could jump everyone and release their new console 4th qtr 2005..which would be a big deal since they have recently made a habit of being the last to launch their new consoles (SNES, N64, Gamecube).

You're all missing the big picture.

Acclaim says 3D party games don't sell. Who's to say they're the last that will leave....

Bah..let all of the 3rd parties leave for all I care. Nintendo and the Nintendo owned companies make games that dwarf what 98% of the 3rd parties put out. The only thing the cube won't have is sports games, but I'll assume they won't lose EA. Nintendo is the only console that could hypothetically survive without 3rd party support since they put out a ton of quality games..

Short list of good 3rd parties

SEGA - although they suck for pulling sports titles

EA - no sports games without em

THQ (just because there'd be no wrestling games without em..)

Capcom - They are getting ready to release some awesome games.

Namco

Square - Nintendo got Square back! Square > 1000 Acclaims!

If I can think of any others..I'll add them..

and this is from PGC -

Rumors on the Internet today suggest that Acclaim's new CEO has decided to completely drop support for Nintendo systems. The rumors say that upcoming games like XGRA and Legends of Wrestling III will be finished for GameCube, but no new projects will be started for the system.

We contacted Acclaim about the rumor. They say that quotes in the rumor have been taken out of context, and that the publisher is not actually dropping GameCube or GBA support. Rather, in contrast to their former policy of releasing every title on every system, Acclaim will now evaluate each title and decide which system(s) it best fits. This new publishing strategy goes for GameCube, GBA, PS2, and Xbox. Acclaim is NOT dropping support for Nintendo systems, although it's entirely possible that GameCube will see fewer of the company's games than it previously has.

Acclaim also confirmed that all of the currently announced GameCube titles will be completed and released (barring any specific, unrelated cancellations).

So, it looks like Acclaim hasn't pulled support completely..

Uh, yeah, like I've already said.

The Nintendo audience is basically the hard, hard, HARDcore Ninty fan who really doesn't buy third party titles. Nintendo fans overwhelmingly only own the GameCube solely to buy Nintendo games.

There are also many Cube owners who have it as a second system - they buy most of their games (and particularly multi-format titles) on their PS2 or Xbox, and only the GC-only Cube titles.

Nintendo hasn't been on good ground with third parties since the N64. It swore to remedy the situation, but it didn't then, and I doubt it will now. It's simply Nintendo's very very traditional Japanese business strategy - say what you like about it, but Nintendo are pure profit. Sony are losing shitloads of money all over right now, and MicroSoft lose cash on every console they sell. Neither of those points change the fact that Nintendo sells the fewest consoles in the USA, but the fact is that as long as the company isn't losing money the way its two competitors are, they aren;t going to change their strategy.

How about the killer second parties like Factor 5, Silicon Knights, Retro, and for all intents and purposes, Sega AV? I'll take Eternal Darkness, Rogue Squadron 3, F-Zero and Monkey Ball 3 over ANYTHING Acclaim might dream of putting out.

And everyone said that Nintendo fucked up for letting go of Rare, yet here we are all those months later and they still haven't out a new title. Shit, when NINTENDO THEMSELVES are putting out games on schedule (i.e. Zelda) and Rare are still making everybody wait, it really does speak volumes.

What does the physical size of the disc have to do with anything? Last I checked, the Gamecube discs hold twice as much info as a CD...

I think that should be re-worded to "third party titles from Acclaim don't sell" ...they're just trying to cover themselves from the fact that they couldn't pull a profitable game out of their ass on their best day.

It's not just Acclaim.

Look at Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance. That game sold very poorly on gamecube compared to Xbox and PS2.
