Guest notJames Report post Posted June 27, 2003 Everything. Seriously. It's all good. For more bands of their ilk, check out Stiff Little Fingers, Squeeze and Madness for more 80s Brit mod fun. And if cool songwriting is your kick, it goes without saying to delve into Elvis Costello post-haste.
rising up out of the back seat-nuh 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2003 For anyone who likes those type of English bands, check out The Libertine's CD. It's produced by Mick Jones of The Clash, the lyrics sound like a mix or Morriseys, Wellers and Strummers, and it's the closest thing I've heard to the old school of English rock in a long time. Guest Joe_G Report post Posted June 27, 2003 The Clash, huh? Well, let's see: London Calling is my favorite album, like ever. A must have. If I have to pick certain songs, we'll say London Calling, Hateful, Rudie Can't Fail, Spanish Bombs, and Death or Glory. The Clash, their first album, is also a classic and only a notch below LC. Check out "I'm So Bored With the USA," "Complete Control," "White Riot," and their cover of "I Fought The Law." Give 'Em Enough Rope is a great album but runs out of steam near the end. Still, contains my favorite Clash song ever with "Safe European Home." Also listen to "Tommy Gun" and "Drug Stabbing Time." There's a great single album located in Sandista, unfortunately, they released it as a triple album. For die-hards only. Check out "Police on My Back" and "Somebody Got Murdered." Combat Rock was their big album, but beyond the singles "Rock The Casbah" and "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" you can skip the rest. Cut the Crap is aptly named, since the band (the Clash in name only) cut one of the crappiest records ever. Avoid at all costs. Hope this helps.
Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Report post Posted June 27, 2003 I agree with all of the Clash recommendations, but don't forget Straight To Hell, off of Combat Rock. As for The Smiths, BUY EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEIR ALBUMS AND LISTEN TO THEM OVER AND OVER.
Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Report post Posted June 27, 2003 And as for other bands to check out, you can't go wrong with The Feelies and English Beat.
Guest INXS Report post Posted June 27, 2003 New York Dolls -- New York Dolls New York Dolls -- In Too Much Too Soon This is about as raw and sloppy as you can get.
Guest Scud Report post Posted June 27, 2003 The Buzzcocks remind me of The Jam, you should check them out. I personally prefer Singles Going Steady to anything The Jam has put out.
Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Report post Posted June 27, 2003 Proto punk to check out: Roxy Music The Velvet Underground The New York Dolls The Stooges Modern Lovers
rising up out of the back seat-nuh 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2003 Also The Strokes for a more modern twist on the above.
Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted June 28, 2003 I like the Vandals too. Not great by any means, but fun. Favorite Clash song: The Guns of Brixton Favorite Smiths song: Cemetry Gates
Guest benoitrulz4life Report post Posted June 28, 2003 Finally, some respect for the Dolls on this board. Everybody dumps on them for some reason. Well, besides the fact that they really can't play their instruments very well, but that adds to the rawness of the record, and Johnny Thunders actually turned out to be a pretty good guitarist. The Stooges totally kick ass, and all three of their studio albums are worth getting, as well as a really hard to find live disc titled "Metallic K.O." Crowd baiting, Iggy going nuts, it's all there. As for the Clash, I recommend getting "London Calling", the US version of "The Clash", and the "Essential Clash", released earlier this year. It cuts out all the filler from their other albums, and adds the tracks deleted from the UK version of "The Clash".
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 28, 2003 The Damned. How can you not appreciate a guy named Rat Scabies?
Guest Random Hero Report post Posted June 28, 2003 Cheers guys, I'll try and check them all out. Best get downloading then.
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted June 28, 2003 Yeah, the first two Roxy Music albums are great. And even though he seems to be associated with ambient music moreso than anything else, Brian Eno had quite a few excellent solo albums that don't sound anything like The Clash or The Jam, but are British and thoroughly worth checking out. I'd suggest starting with Here Come The Warm Jets. And then do some research on him because he's an interesting character. I can't say enough.

Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Report post Posted June 28, 2003 Also get My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, Brian Eno's album with David Byrne of the Talking Heads. It owns.
Guest gthureson Report post Posted June 29, 2003 I agree with all of the Clash recommendations, but don't forget Straight To Hell, off of Combat Rock. As for The Smiths, BUY EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEIR ALBUMS AND LISTEN TO THEM OVER AND OVER. I wouldn't bother buying every single one of the Smiths records, because the Smiths had this annoying habit of fluffing out records by re-releasing songs on subsequent records. Start with "Louder than Bombs", see if you like it, and then track back the stuff you like onto the albums they orginally came out on. The Jam have a great compilation called, reasonably, "The Very Best of the Jam".
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 29, 2003 Eno also did some stuff with Robert Fripp of King Crimson.

Start with "Louder than Bombs", see if you like it, and then track back the stuff you like onto the albums they orginally came out on. Yeah, I can't really afford to splash out on loads of CD's anyway, so I'll probably just buy maybe a couple of albums, or maybe a greatest hits or something. That's why I asked on here for recommendations, cos I've got to be selective. So far I've downloaded a bunch of Clash and Smiths songs, but I haven't really gotten chance to listen to 'em all. 'Cemetary Gates' and 'Pretty Girls Make Graves' are two that I've downlaoded that I really like. 'This Charming Man' is still my favourite Smiths song though. I already had quite a few 'Clash' songs, I didn't have'London Calling' though, so thanks to whoever recommended that one. I also downloaded some Led Zeppelin...'Immigrant Song', 'Trampled Underfoot' and 'Dazed & Confused'...which are all amazing(goes without saying really). Best Clash album: comonly regarded to be Londons Calling Best Smiths album: commonly regarded to be The Queen Is Dead (although you're probably better off with the singles compilation) Just get on Soulseek and download those albums
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 29, 2003 Greatest hits albums are the devil. It's just a band's more commercially-known songs randomly thrown willy-nilly onto a disc. Get an actual album, put together they way they intended. That said, I fucking hate the Smiths with a burning passion, and laugh at Morrissey.
Guest Random Hero Report post Posted June 29, 2003 That's a fair point about greatest hits albums, my favourite songs off albums do often tend to be ones that don't get released. I reckon I'll just download more songs and then see which album(s) has the most of the ones I like. While we're at it, anyone got any Led Zeppelin recommendations? Not stairway to heaven. Chave, I'll probably pick up both them albums, in a couple of weeks, as all my money this week is going on a trip to Alton Towers(theme park) for a couple of days. Fuck knows why, I'm scared shitless of rollercoasters. Guess I'll just have to go on the monorail for 6 hours, heh.

Physical Graffiti And Led Zeppelin II are also highly thought of.
Guest notJames Report post Posted June 30, 2003 If you're stuck with only getting a couple of Smiths albums, get Louder Than Bombs and The Queen Is Dead. Everything after that is gravy. And if you like "Bigmouth Strikes Again" off of The Queen Is Dead, try to track down the Treepeople's cover of it, for it kicks serious ass.
Guest Harry Hood Report post Posted June 30, 2003 If you're like me, and you hsould be, the best LZ albums are III and Houses of the holy
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted July 1, 2003 The Smiths are the best band ever, Morrissey is the greatest Singer-songwriter that ever lived and The Libertines are twats. There.
Guest Dr. Wrestlingphysics Report post Posted July 2, 2003 The Jam seems to have been largely ignored so far! A Greatest Hits compilation would probably be a good start as their style changed greatly from their first hits to their last, and it would be a good way of seeing what era you like the best. Weller's favourite Jam album has been reported as being "Sound Affects" and has such good songs as Start, That's Entertainment, Man in The Cornershop, Dreamtime and Pretty Green on it.
