It's produced by Mick Jones of The Clash, the lyrics sound like a mix or Morriseys, Wellers and Strummers, and it's the closest thing I've heard to the old school of English rock in a long time.

If I have to pick certain songs, we'll say London Calling, Hateful, Rudie Can't Fail, Spanish Bombs, and Death or Glory. The Clash, their first album, is also a classic and only a notch below LC. Check out "I'm So Bored With the USA," "Complete Control," "White Riot," and their cover of "I Fought The Law." Give 'Em Enough Rope is a great album but runs out of steam near the end. Still, contains my favorite Clash song ever with "Safe European Home." Also listen to "Tommy Gun" and "Drug Stabbing Time." There's a great single album located in Sandista, unfortunately, they released it as a triple album. For die-hards only. Check out "Police on My Back" and "Somebody Got Murdered." Combat Rock was their big album, but beyond the singles "Rock The Casbah" and "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" you can skip the rest. Cut the Crap is aptly named, since the band (the Clash in name only) cut one of the crappiest records ever. Avoid at all costs. Hope this helps.

Well, besides the fact that they really can't play their instruments very well, but that adds to the rawness of the record, and Johnny Thunders actually turned out to be a pretty good guitarist. The Stooges totally kick ass, and all three of their studio albums are worth getting, as well as a really hard to find live disc titled "Metallic K.O." Crowd baiting, Iggy going nuts, it's all there. As for the Clash, I recommend getting "London Calling", the US version of "The Clash", and the "Essential Clash", released earlier this year. It cuts out all the filler from their other albums, and adds the tracks deleted from the UK version of "The Clash".

And even though he seems to be associated with ambient music moreso than anything else, Brian Eno had quite a few excellent solo albums that don't sound anything like The Clash or The Jam, but are British and thoroughly worth checking out. I'd suggest starting with Here Come The Warm Jets. And then do some research on him because he's an interesting character. I can't say enough.

Start with "Louder than Bombs", see if you like it, and then track back the stuff you like onto the albums they orginally came out on. The Jam have a great compilation called, reasonably, "The Very Best of the Jam".

That's why I asked on here for recommendations, cos I've got to be selective. So far I've downloaded a bunch of Clash and Smiths songs, but I haven't really gotten chance to listen to 'em all. 'Cemetary Gates' and 'Pretty Girls Make Graves' are two that I've downlaoded that I really like. 'This Charming Man' is still my favourite Smiths song though. I already had quite a few 'Clash' songs, I didn't have'London Calling' though, so thanks to whoever recommended that one. I also downloaded some Led Zeppelin...'Immigrant Song', 'Trampled Underfoot' and 'Dazed & Confused'...which are all amazing(goes without saying really).

Get an actual album, put together they way they intended. That said, I fucking hate the Smiths with a burning passion, and laugh at Morrissey.

Physical Graffiti And Led Zeppelin II are also highly thought of.

Everything after that is gravy. And if you like "Bigmouth Strikes Again" off of The Queen Is Dead, try to track down the Treepeople's cover of it, for it kicks serious ass.

A Greatest Hits compilation would probably be a good start as their style changed greatly from their first hits to their last, and it would be a good way of seeing what era you like the best. Weller's favourite Jam album has been reported as being "Sound Affects" and has such good songs as Start, That's Entertainment, Man in The Cornershop, Dreamtime and Pretty Green on it.
