RVD vs Sabu

Recommended Posts

Guest jm29195

I just watched their stretcher match from 'The Doctor Is In' back in 1996 and I thought it was really good for a Sabu match- especially the spot with the top rope fisherman's buster through a table to the floor.

Are there any other matches with these 2 floating around and if they are, ae they any good, I mean I appreciate decent wrestling but a good spotfest is ok once in a while....

RVD and Sabu had several matches against each other. In addition to numerous house show matches, they've faced each other at the following major shows:

Hardcore Heaven 1996

Hostile City Showdown 1996

A Matter of Respect 1996

WrestlePalooza 1998

Guilty as Charged 2000

If you liked their Stretcher Match, you'll probably like the rest of their matches. I always thought that the RVD vs. Sabu matches were overrated by ECW fans, but that's just me.

Yeha I've seen the Guilty as Charged 2000 one I didn't think it was up to much, I reckon Sabu deterioated greatly inbetween 97-98 but mosto f his matches from before then stil hold up now but were revolutionary for the time. btw what would say as their best match?

Did they have one at house party 96?

No, that was Van Dam's debut against Axl Rotten.

The respect match which I believe was where Van Dam refused to shake Sabu's hand (or that was the match before it, I get confused) was pretty good if I remember correctly. Anything with the two post-97 really wasn't that great, including the horrible Wrestlepalooza match where they blew everything, including chunks. (Sabu vomits on camera).

I thought it was really good. There was some decent psychology (RVD kept going for Sabu's neck, Sabu kept going for RVD's legs), the spots were really good, and, of course...TOP ROPE FISHERMAN'S BUSTER~!

Seriously??? Damn I gotta watch that tape again.

Nice to know that PPV made someone besides me ill.

I think that the respect match came after the match in which RVD refused to shake Sabu's hand.

Here's how I remember it- RVD pins Sabu clean. Sabu offers his hand in a sign of respect, but RVD refuses. Sabu takes the refusal as a sign of disrespect, and challenges RVD to the respect match. I could be wrong, so feel free to correct me.

And to top it off, the Wrestlepalooza match didn't even have a winner.

I remember watching RVD vs. Sabu at WrestlePalooza '98 on PPV when it happened, and thinking to myself "Self, WHY do people like this? It's SO SO SO BORING." I can stand a spotfest when there's at least some minimal spotfest-style psychology (like TLC 1), but I just can't stomach this stuff. And I was a 17 year-old mark who wasn't aware of the IWC (outside of Scoopswrestling.com) or what they liked/disliked at the time. I imagine now I'd hate it even more. :D

But then I was very cynical in '98. Rock and Jericho were pretty much the only ones entertaining me at the time. I loved them title-hoggin' bastards. Not so much RVD's title-hogging.

I think it's the other way around in terms of the pin. Sabu pins RVD, RVD refuses to shake Sabu's hand, respect match signed.

I thought the crowd shit on the Wrestlepalooza 98 match.

Now that I think about it, you're probably right. I just remember that in one of the 1996 matches, RVD pinned Sabu clean with a fisherman's buster, followed by a split-legged moonsault, then refused to shake Sabu's hand. I think that the match that I just described was from A Matter of Respect, but I'm not sure.

They had one match that went on for 45 minutes that I caught one night right before Sabu was gone from ECW for good. I remember enjoying that match.

I think that is the match from OCT. 1999 on ECW TV. It wasn't on the TNN show, just the syndicated. I've never seen it but I really wish I had. Anyone got that on tape?

I was watching one of my old tapes from 96 (right before Heat Wave), and on an episode of ECW TV, they showed clips of an RVD/Sabu match where the ring broke and both ended up getting carried out on stretchers. The clips made it look good, but how was that match?

I think I do someplace, but I haven't watched most of my 1999 stuff since it first came out. I seem to remember enjoying that match myself.

That match is the main event from Hardcore Heaven 1996- it's a decent match, eailly on par with the rest of their earlier work and they till manage to work in all the insane spots despite the op rope being broke 5 minutes in. It's really strange seeing Sabu not blowing spots (well maybe a few)

I think I am one of the few people who loved their GAC 2000 match. I thought it was great.

Personally I do like the stretcher match and the repect match. But it seemed that the more and more they would fight each other there would be more and more blown spots. So for that reason alone I like their earlier match way better than the later ones. I always thought they were better tag team partners than opponents for each other.
