CM Punk...

Recommended Posts

Guest dvkorn

Just wondering what you guys think of CM Punk. I have not seen a great deal of his stuff but the stuff i have seen has been impressive. Vs Hero - Tables and Ladders match - IWA Mid South 2nd Anniversary at House of Hardcore. Vs Justice Pain at CZW Ultra Violent Freedom of Expression. and a few RoH and TNA shows with him on it.

Also, i think it was DVDVR, someone said he was one of the most overrated wrestlers on indys. Soo...

What do you guys think of him..? is he overrated...??

Thanks

I think he's overrated by people who really like him (like me), but so many people don't know about him that I don't think he's overrated.

I dug his work in TNA (all I had seen so far) and got into it despite not having a character at the time. I saw him live at ROH a month ago, and was completely won over. Then I got to meet him as well.

I like him. Great blend of cruiser style and brawling, coupled with an awesome gimmick.

Ive only seen the gauntlet match he had in ROH (back at Unscripted - if memory serves me correctly). So I cant really comment.

However, I have just started watch When Hero met Punk, so ill post after ive seen the full tape.

One thing that strickes me so far though, is the size of the audience. Theres like 150 max in attendence. Anyone who busts his ass for 90 minutes in front of 150 fans, is ok in my book. What sort of work ethic is that!

Punk isn't the world's greatest worker but he is GOLD on the stick. He's become the most over heel in ROH

he is much like trent acid in that he is a better heel and mic person than he is a worker. which schould not discount the fact that he is in the top 10% of heavyweight workers IMO

Yeah, Punk is asolid worker pretty much all the time, but he isnt as great as most of his fans make him out to be. Personally, out of all IWA MS guys who first got their names there, I would say Chris Hero is the best. Ace Steel comes in second and Punk is about tied with Cabana for charisma and mic work...both guys can be great heels or faces. Also, Punk did have some pretty overrated matches with Chris Daniels last year which really took his work down a level in my book.

Personally, I think Hero is the one who is overrated- I mean, he is an incredible wrestler, almost American Dragon level, but he lacks just about everything else- look, mic skills, markout spots, etc.

Punk and Cabana are in fact just about equal, I'd give the edge to Punk because of his conditioning and he can cut an INTENSE promo whereas Colt hasn't proven he can. That said, every time I see these guys I become more of a fan of them.

Punk is awesome. He has a clash of styles in moves. Crusier,Brawling, everything. He is golden on the mic. The whole straightedge thing is awesome. ONe of my favorite gimmicks around.

Punk is an awesome worker. Anyone who can be as consistantly great as him has to be awesome. Hero is better, but that's not saying anything bad about him; a LOT of people are worse than Hero. But, Punk is within top 10 on the indies, because he's got his psych down, he can work a crowd, he can talk like there's no tomorrow, and he's got presence about him that not too many guys have.

As good as Punk is wrestling, he's hilarious on commentary. Personally, I prefer commentary that stays on topic, and to the point. But for funny rambling, Punk takes the cake.

Oh, and the order that the IWA-MS guys go in my opinion: Hero, Steel, Punk, Cabana. No insult to Cabana, because he's great, wakka wakka.

I dont know. When Hero was with the Super Heroes in 2001 and some of the times in 2000 he cut some pretty good promos and had pretty good charisma in the ring. Now as a face, he is just pretty much there and just wrestles. Punk may have a better look than him, but much of his mic skills are a credit to his gimmick (well not really his gimmick, but his whole lifestyle). Cabana cuts better heel promos than Punk IMO one example being the two IWA MS/Chikara shows from last year where he turned heel. Also, Cabana has a look too but is he better than Hero... I say no. And no one ever said Hero had look or markout spots but anyone who can carry M-Dogg 20 to a good match has to be something good and that guy wasnt Punk.

Why doesnt Hero work more shows than he does? I never see him anywhere but IWA MS. I'd like to see him in ROH.

ROH doesn't want him, for whatever reason.

Hero works overseas a lot, he is/was the champion of the Germany-based WXW promotion. He worked 1 or 2 XPW dates (during the short-lived IWA/XPW "development deal") before the promotion shut down.

Oh yeah, you can also see him early on in his career on the first JCW tape against Hizaya.

Hero said that he doesn´t like the RoH style - quote:

Hero:"A good Wrestling-match should be build up like a little story, i miss that in RoH", they just spot spot spot like in that Scramble-Matches etc".

He also doesn´t like Low Ki´s style.

I don´t know what can be bad about the fact that you don´t have flashy trademark moves. Hero is a good face, he wouldn´t be a good heel and he surely has the looks someone needs. He doesn´t hit the gym appearently but I don´t give a damn about such things if he can wrestle 90 minute matches

I like Punk. He is a solid worker, has a good look, and is really strong on the stick. Sure he has had some crappy matches, but for the most part his matches have been really stong. Bottom line though, he entertains me. Now with Hero I don't think ROH would be the right promotion for him. I feel NWA-Wildside would be ideal for him. I feel his work would get him ove huge in that territory.

I definately like Punk. He is overrated by some (the people that literally worship him), but to be honest, he's one of my favorite wrestlers to watch. He doesn't get overly complex with his stuff (which pisses me off about a lot of the "top wrestlers") and he generally makes things enjoyable to watch. The only Punk match I saw that I didn't like was his one match in CZW against Justice Pain. Everything was off about that match.

I don't like the term "overrated" though. It seems like anything liked by a majority of a segment of people (i.e. indy fans) is deemed "overrated." People are too cynical.
