July 02, 2003 - In a presentation made in Europe today, THQ outlined the

major new features and the substantially impressive set of improvements

it has planned for this years WWE SmackDown...Here Comes the Pain.

After listening to consumer and press feedback, THQ has decided to

overhaul its wrestling game from top to bottom. This year's effort

features everything from a new grappling system, four different types of

grapples, a countering system, more strategy and moves sets overall for

starters. The full list of improvements range from storyline, moves

sets, graphics, individual wrestler characteristics, submissions, and

animations. Here's the presentation in bullet form

The New Game Features include:

New Grappling-Based System

Four different types of grappling with corresponding move sets tailored

to that specific grapple (power move set, submission move set, quick

move set and signature move set)

Four available moves out of each grapple based on superstar's real life

move sets

New two-button countering system

Ability to drag superstars around the mat before putting a move on them.

Deeper gameplay experience, more move sets and more strategy

Differentiated Superstar Abilities

Who you pick really matters...superstars will each have unique strengths

and weaknesses based on speed, power, strength and technical abilities.

Weight detection...no more picking up Big Show with Spike Dudley!

New Submission System Including Location Specific Damage

Work your opponent's body parts to make him less powerful, more fatigued

and in the end...make him submit.

New tug-of-war battling system interface. See your opponent desperately

try to get to the ropes as you apply even more pressure.

Animation Overhaul

Feel the pain of each move. A new reaction system so your superstars

really sell to the moves put on them.

See all the new moves available to your disposal to inflict pain on your

opponent.

Graphics so real you can touch them

A complete overhaul of the graphics engine. Each superstar will now look

exactly like their real life counterpart.

3D crowd.

Blood.

Season Mode

Build your superstar's attributes with five core strengths.

New original storyline.

New money earning system with a whole new shop zone filled with

compelling unlockables.

Previously mentioned key problems with season mode addressed.

Overall Presentation Refinements

Redesign of sound, camera angles and special effects will put you right

in the action with cinematic experience.

Superstar Voiceover.

New Game Modes and Match Types

Bra and Panty Match...a whole new experience.

The elimination chamber has arrived.

First Blood Match.

New fully interactive backstage environments take the action outside the

ring to unparalleled situations.

Updated Roster

More than 60 superstars including all the top talent.

For the first time ever in a WWE videogame...LEGENDS.

THQ wants to redefine it, not merely improve it. Every aspect is being

overhauled based on press and consumer feedback. We'll have more on WWE

SmackDown...Here Comes the Pain in the near future.

------

Well, I still count Andre and to a lesser extent HBK as "legends," although No Mercy was a WWF game, technically.

I remember filling out that survey on their site. Maybe this will be the more-AKI-like engine we've been begging for?

Looks like it could be a definite purchase instead of just a minor upgrade.

I can confirm that all of this is true, except for the "ablility to drag your opponent around the ring before putting a move on him." I cannot confirm that because this is the first I have heard about this. I will look into it and give further feedback and more info. For up to date updates look to http://www.sdhotelgames.com .

EDIT: I can confirm that dragging your opponent is confirmed and is used by pressing the newly used R2 button. It used to be for taunting but is not for dragging opponent/reversing moves. To taunt, you will use the analog sticks.

If Bret Hart isn't in it, but Owen and Bulldog make it in, I will NOT be buying this game.

Of course, I don't own a PS2, so I won't probably won't be buying it anyway... But my statement still stands.

Gee, these play mechanics sound very familiar...

Especially taunting with the analog sticks.

Sounds great,

But I don't the fact that "Legends" will be added and yet you just know will they probably leave out current roster members like Tommy Dreamer, Nunzio, Ultimo Dragon and Spanky.

I meant as far as PS2 wrestling games go.

If NM2 is ever released, I'll go buy a GameCube instantly.

I don't really see the point of getting all worked for blood in a wrestling game besides for aesthetics(sp?) Blood in a wrestling match should always be to further a story in my opinion and how can u tell a story on a PS2?

That was my first thought: Is it selling like they do in real life or does everybody sell the same way?

I'm actually looking forward to the legends, but it depends highly on who they put in as "legends". I have no interest in recreating S.D. Jones vs. Baron Mikel Scicluna in my season mode.

You should have to EARN blood. If you want to make somebody bleed, you've got to beat the hell out of them. Have them get busted open once the computer senses a pinfall is imminent or something.

Nope. Not yet.

AKI doesn't have the WWE license, so you won't get a No Mercy II.

It wouldn't be called that anyway, but you get the point.

Although if they did make a game like that, I think it would be worthy to be called Summerslam if they could release it at the right time.

And the AKI games did blood right. Beat the opponent against the railing/post/or use weapons, and enough of that causes your opponent ro juice. Just like it should be.

It isn't necessary to me, though.

R2 is actually used to focus in the SD series. L2 is used to taunt.

I'm really wondering if the "Location Specific Damage" thing is like No Mercy, where the guy limps around like mad, or if it's like Shut Your Mouth, where they sell like RVD and limp around every now and then before grapples.

Was there a release date in there somewhere?

They confirmed that you will have to "beat the hell" out of your opponent in the game, which as most people reported was 5 to 10 minutes in the match. The blood looks eerily like real life blood supposedly. The supposed release date for SD:HCTP right now is Late October 2003, but as with ALL WWE PS2 video games, it will be pushed back until the week of Nov 10 - 15th. Its a given as they have done this with all the video games...hell, they even did it with NM.

I'm so there. It won't come close to whatever definition of perfect everyone has, but this is the shit SD! has needed since the beginning, just for realism purposes.

Legends: BETTER have Randy fucking Savage. That's all. I don't care if Bret, Owen, Pillman, Blassie, whoever is there as long as i can mark to Pomp & Circumstance playing him to the ring on an episode of SD!

The only thing that can be debated about, is that the legends enter to the ring on the familiar WM 3 mini-ring/float. I really think personally that, that sucks because they should get their lazy asses down and walk to the ring, but I am glad they added the EDIT-A-WRESTLER feature in. I can't wait to edit all of their attires just a bit. I mean, I'll be editing HBK's attires weekly to change along with his costumes.

IMO of course.

Edit a Wrestler at last?

That sounds great. I was glad that the SD games allow for editing movesets, but unfortunately you're stuck with the appearance.

How much will we be able to change on our wrestler? Like, will we be able to turn a useless slug like Nathan Jones into a completely different wrestler if we want to instead of using a CAW spot?

Or will changing the appearance be more along the lines of the old AKI wrestler edit, where it's only costume/head/etc.

No Mercy let you completely change the wrestler model, although you were stuck with the default moves/stats.

I'm not clear on how *much* you can edit the wrestlers, but I feel as though you can edit them all except their IMPORTANTS stats aka Their name, weight, height, age, etc. Im hoping that you can get rid of slugs and put in better wrestlers instead.

Yeah, but since they *update* the game every year by releasing another SD game, I think they would put the weight and height as unchangeable so that people won't be able to do as our idea is. And just to offer you a glimpse of hope, I have not yet seen Nathan Jones' name on the roster yet. I'm hoping that he doesn't make it in, just as I hope Zach Gowen doesn't make it in. I have a different reason for him though. I feel that THQ would totally destroy his character as far as in the video game. Think of how *HEAD* was in No Mercy people..... a one legged wrestler will need to be studied up by THQ first before they place him in the game.

IMO
