Guest AndrewisyourHero Report post Posted July 8, 2003 Various notes from RAW... - Goldberg was originally set to wrestle against La Resistance on RAW last night, but came to the show with an arm infection. His match was therefore pulled from the show. - A popular topic backstage at RAW last night was how low the attendance was for the weekend house shows in Canada. Low attendance means lower bonuses for the wrestlers. Wrestlers with low guaranteed downsides are now barely covering their road expenses. - WWE went out of their way last night to try and make sure their Canadian wrestlers did not get special reactions for whatever reason. The Chris Jericho/HBK segment was designed for that purpose. Credit: 1wrestling.com

Guest AndrewisyourHero Report post Posted July 8, 2003 So, because they put effort into keeping the faces face and the heels heel...they hate Canada? It's because anywhere else, they'll let the hometown or home country in this case, hero get a pop. It normally doesn't faze them. And, that whole Jericho/HBK segment killed the crowd dead. Guest Lord of The Curry Report post Posted July 8, 2003 No, because they prevented Canadian wrestlers from getting cheered they hate Canada. Where the fuck was Storm last night?

Like when Angle would go to Pittsburg as a heel and then insult the crowd to get some heat? Does the WWE hate Pittsburg too?
Guest CanadianChick Report post Posted July 8, 2003 I don't think they hate Canada, but I don't really agree with what they did. The crowd obviously wanted to chant for Jericho, so why not let them for one night? It won't effect anything outside of last night. HBK would have been a heel anyways, so why not? And it's better than killing the crowd's heat.

I never said anything about the result, just the action- as that's why you claimed the WWE "hated Canada."

Seriously, there was no point of Jericho suddenly becoming a heel. Shawn was playing the heel already. Just let the crowd cheer as they please unless absolutely nessesary. It's better than no heat at all.
Guest Lord of The Curry Report post Posted July 8, 2003 I didn't watch the segment but it seems very obvious that the WWE went at it totally ass-backwards (as they do with most things) and by the end of it the fans had a heel who they didn't want to boo and a face whom they didn't want to cheer. Silly WWE.

I never said anything about the result, just the action- as that's why you claimed the WWE "hated Canada." What was the point then of setting up the Montreal scenario, which WWE seemingly loves to pull up every time they come near the city, if you were gonna try and make Jericho a heel in his home country? Why not just have Jericho come out and bash the crowd? That would have had a better chance of getting the result WWE wanted then that stupid and pointless segment which accomplished absolutely NOTHING, aside from killing the crowd, who usually will pop for anything. Silly WWE. That is basically what happened. The segment completely sucked the life out of the rest of the show, just after they brought us to our high point. Go look at the OaORaw Thread from last night. During that segment, we all started marking out as it started, and as it went further and further, we all just didn't care anymore and were upset with the fucking farce we received. Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted July 8, 2003 Cena badmouths his hometown (and normally gives props to the Yankees, which is like insulting someone's mother here) when he's in Boston ... ergo the wwe hates Boston?!?

Guest AndrewisyourHero Report post Posted July 8, 2003 Cena badmouths his hometown (and normally gives props to the Yankees, which is like insulting someone's mother here) when he's in Boston ... ergo the wwe hates Boston?!? Cena plays the heel role from the start. Jericho didn't. He played the face through most of the segment, until the end where he half-heartedly turned heel. There's a difference between Cena and Jericho.

Guest Will Scarlet Report post Posted July 8, 2003 Yeah, so the attempt didn't work. But what's wrong with trying? Here's part of it: A popular topic backstage at RAW last night was how low the attendance was for the weekend house shows in Canada. I could be crazy here, but if the attendance at house shows is low, the PPV buyrates are low, and they are even having trouble selling out Raws and Smackdowns lately, then maybe they shouldn't be worried who the fans cheer and boo. Honestly, if a fan wants to plunk down money to cheer Chris Jericho or to see Lance Storm wrestle or whatever, then why not give it to them? If they dislike Canadians so much because they don't cheer or boo who they're supposed to, then WHY THE HELL DO YOU HOLD TV EVENTS THERE?!? Why not hold a Canadian only PPV or have a tour there or something like they do with England or Japan? I guess I just don't get WWE logic on these things. Sure, I can see them doing this if business was good, but if business is in the shitter, then I don't think trying to control your crowds is a wise idea. Logically, that would just kill the fanbase you have left. Then again, it's not my money being wasted, so I don't care.
Guest The Old Me Report post Posted July 8, 2003 They only go to Canada so they can piss all over it and it's stars. And I'm an american for god's sake, so don't call me biased. Montreal is always a hot crowd, and they fucking shit all over them!
Guest Big McLargeHuge Report post Posted July 8, 2003 What ever happened to the Fans choosing who to cheer and boo, eh, Vince? And really, are a few shows out of the year in Bizarro World going to affect the product? Things always go back to normal once they come back to the States, so why alienate your fans? Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted July 8, 2003 - WWE went out of their way last night to try and make sure their Canadian wrestlers did not get special reactions for whatever reason. The Chris Jericho/HBK segment was designed for that purpose. So exactly what does this say that I didn't know from watching the show? And "hometown hero" is bullshit. They're wrasslers, for chrissakes.
Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted July 8, 2003 It'll be interesting to see what happans tonight in Toronto. I don't think anyone out there can honestly deny that the WWE has been trying to make the WWE fans think what they want the fans to think especially in Canada. They also seem to have a petty grudge against the Canadian fans. Not enough to not visit to Canada but enough of a grudge to make things "miserable" for us. Lance Storm as an example wouldn't have gotten the boring chants last night so they didn't put him on. When the fans voice their opinion the WWE turns their heads the other way because they don't like what they're hearing. Anyway, It'll be interesting to see what happens to Benoit tonight. Guest Miss Independant Report post Posted July 8, 2003 As it's been said above, it's not so much Vince hating Canada, it's Vince hating the crowd, as a whole, go against what he wants. I don't think Vince turns his head though. He seems to grab the crowd by the collective throat and hit them over the head with a stick. If a star of only middling influence (Jericho, RVD, ect) gets over in a way that Vince didn't plan for, the performers (and the crowd sometimes also) will be humiliated as much as humanly possible in the shortest ammount of time. It's so sad that things are like this, but it isn't news and Vince has never been nice guy.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted July 8, 2003 Vince was TOTALLY fucking with the crowd last night. The Dusty Finish to the Booker T match. The Jericho heel/face dynamic. Kane getting cheered and then turning. That's not "playing with the crowds emotions" that's fucking with them and they did it 3 separate fucking times in one night. Canada has always been a strong territory for the WWE, back in the mid 90's when they were domestically failing Canada and their attendance didn't drop nearly as much - even now their ratings on the Score and TSN aren't falling as they are on TNN and UPN. There is no good reason as to why they keep on screwing with their Canadian fanbase other than Vince hates (us).
