Burton's Willy Wonka remake

Tim Burton's Willy Wonka is scheduled to begin filming in 2004; however, there is one problem: he can't decide between Walken or Keaton to play the role of Wonka.

 

IMO, Keaton would be the better choice, but Depp -- especially after seeing him in Pirates of the Caribbean -- would be the best choice.

 

What do 'yall think?

If Depp went the way of his Ed Wood performance, he could definitely pull this off. As for choosing between Keaton and Walken... well, I like Walken a whole lot more, so if he can play the part right, then let him... but something tells me that the guy whoplayed the Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow wouldn't quite fit the role of a singing candyman.

Lets be honest...Willy Wonka isn't exactly a happy kid friendly guy...he has a Sinister side to him. Walken can bring out that Sinister side better than Keaton or Depp. Walken can also do more than act evil.

That was probably just him saying he'd like to.

 

I believe Manson has talked to Burton and said he'd like to do something in the remake. My guess is that he'll appear on screen during the tunnel ride and contribute a song to the soundtrack.

Depp will have the role and it will be Burton's "dark vision" of Willie Wonka. And it will probably suck.

At one point I heard Wonka was to be Nicholas Cage.

 

It depends on which way they want to go, as to who I would cast. If it's going to be a big blockbuster, children targeted film, I'd go with Keaton. He's very funny and energetic when doing his zany shctick, very much a more subdued Robin Williams. If Burton is really going for the bizarre and the movie winds up be a homage to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, I'd go with Walken. He's just plain creepy. Also, with Keaton you get the comeback factor and strong links to Beetlejuice.

I hate that it's being remade too. I really can't see what the original is lacking that a remake could add to it. Frankly I'm not overly enamoured with either of those choices for Wonka either. Walken definitely has Wonka's creepy, darkside down but I'm not sure he could pull off his cheery, sing-song, oddball side. I can't really see either in Keaton. Wilder brought Wonka to life so beautifully. I can't think of anybody who'd be better suited to the role.

Come on! This is the no-brainer of the century, Walken can be mysterious, he can spout off those riddles and quips effortlessly, he's a professional dancer basically in theatre dance which the movie calls for, he looks old enough but not too old, and most of all when it comes to the turn from happy to dark and back to happy, who can pull it better th an him!? Keaton!? Come on.....

Manson was seriously campaigning for the roll but IIRC the estate that controls the Willie Wonka franchise didn't want Manson as Wonka and told him to shut up because it wasn't going to happen.

 

BTW check out the video for "Dope Hat". It's Manson's take on the Boatride sequence and IMHO one of his best videos...

Well, considering that Willie Wonka is his favorite movie of all-time (he actually dedicates quite a bit to it in his autobiography), I think it'd only be natural to want to play his childhood icon.

I'd love to see Walken do Wonka. But if it's a non-musical version then I suppose Keaton would do just fine.

But how do you know? He hasn't been in anything besides maybe a small appearance as himself. Just remember how good of an actor Will Smith turned out to be (say what the fuck you will, he ain't bad).

I actually think Depp might be too YOUNG for the part... isn't the whole ending that Wonka is retiring and the golden ticket thing was to find someone he could give the factory to?

It "needs" to be remade because the author wasn't pleased with the original movie. The author's estate is following through on his wishes for a new movie.

 

So it's the author that wanted a new movie, not some studio executive.

 

 

I honestly believe that Walken is perfect for the role. Walken can do more than be evil, he just doesn't get very many chances to do it. When you add on his ability to dance and sing...he's perfect.

 

Keaton...I just can't see him in the role.

 

Depp...I'm a big fan, but I can't see him singing or dancing and i have my doubts about his ability to do Wonka's dark side justice.

Roald Dahl wasn't happy with the movie??? God, you're kidding. I wonder what part. I might have to go read the book again and see if I can find what part of the movie departs signifcantly from the book. I do remember in Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator Dahl portrayed Wonka as being more evil and mysterious, and seeing as that book was published two years after the movie was released perhaps that's it

I've never read the book. All I know is that I've read that he wasn't pleased with the outcome of the movie.

 

If he wasn't pleased because it wasn't dark enough, then I can't wait for a family approved remake that satifies his wish.
