Urban Warfare 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2003 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Devils defenceman Ken Daneyko retired Friday, ending an 18-year NHL career that included three Stanley Cup titles in the last nine years. The 39-year-old Daneyko had been considering retirement since the Devils defeated the Mighty Ducks in the finals last month. ``Dreams certainly do come true because I've lived one for the past 20 years,'' Daneyko said. Daneyko's 1,283 games with the Devils ranks fourth in the NHL for games played with the same organization. Before this season, he had played in all 162 post-season games for New Jersey. He played in 13 of 24 this season. Daneyko finishes his career with 36 goals and 142 assists. He had five goals and 17 assists in 175 career playoff games. The 18th overall pick in the 1982 draft, Daneyko has been on New Jersey's roster for all or part of the season since 1983. The Devils also won the Cup in 1995 and 2000, and lost to Colorado in seven games in the 2001 finals. TSN.ca
Guest starvenger Report post Posted July 11, 2003 It's a well deserved retirement. An amazing accomplishment to play for one team your entire career. And he's going out on top too. I wish Yzerman had done that last year...
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted July 11, 2003 Congratulations Kenny. I'm glad he was able to kick his alcohol addiction and be rewarded with 2 more cups I'm glad Pat Burns let him skate on the ice at the end of Game 7- that was a classy move.

Comments on both your comments: Doesn't it seem like EVERY hockey player from the 80s had some sort of addiction problem? You hear so many stories of drinking or drug problems now. I agree that Burns having him out there is a classy move, but I'm not surprised. Burns has such an old-school mentality about doing the right thing like this. How long until it's announced that Daneyko's going to be offered a position in the front office?
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted July 11, 2003 I think the Devils will definetley give him a job in the front office. The bigger question: Will he become the first Devil to have his # retired?
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted July 11, 2003 If the Devils were smart, they'd hold off on retiring his number until Stevens retires, and then do Scotty first. He's more deserving of the honor. I'd say do them both at once, but they each deserve their own moment in the spotlight.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 11, 2003 Daneyko in my mind was probably the best Defence-man NJ ever had, and really one hard mother fucker to pass on the blue line. At least he's got three cups with the team, and easily, Daneyko can be a scout for the team
Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted July 11, 2003 I'm not a Devils fan, but this is what is still right with sports; Staying with your team through the bad years. I think they'll retire his number, and then when Stevens retires, he'll get his retired as well.

He was instrumental in 3 Stanly Cups, but Daneyko was a life long Devil, if he deserves to have his number retired they shouldn't wait.
