I didn't enter last year, but I did this year using a simple formula of picking everyone from Nintendo and Square to advance. The only time I did not do this was when I picked Jill to beat Squall, since I just assumed the entire world hated him.

It turns out even SQUALL gets votes from the Square-heads, so I picking everyone Square is a good move.

So far I only have two wrong (didn't know wtf KOS-MOS was and all the bios said "coming soon" when I was filling out the brackets, and the above Jill lose... that should be fine since I had Jill and Crash losing in round 2). I had Scorpion going to round 3, but he appears to be losing today.

My Nintendo > Square > Other company picking strategy has some interesting picks that I could definitely see going wrong. My final 4 is Mario vs. Crono and Link vs. Zelda. I have DK beating Vercetti in round 2. I have Zelda beating Solid Snake. Things that shouldn't be, but sticking with my formula, ended up that way.

Master Chief barely beat Felix, a name I didn't even recognize, so best of luck with THAT, Flyboy.

Edit: I just looked over the brackets again and MC, a non-Square character, is up against Aeries, godess of the GameFAQ fanboys next round. Good fucking luck, Chief. You're screwed, Flyboy

Anyone who knows Gamefaqs didn't take Master Chief anywhere in that tournament. Tons of people admitted on the contest message board that they didn't know who Felix was and just picked him because he was against Master Chief. Other people claimed that Golden Sun is their favorite game, but I seriously doubt that.

Yeah, but it was by such an insubstantial margin against a virtual unknown that there's no way in HELL he's getting by Aeris next round.

I have lost 3 points so far. I also picked Jill over Squall (Jill did surprisingly well last year, and Squall did surprisingly sucky last year), and I picked Ness over Bowser (I though enough people had played at LEAST Smash Bros., if not Earthbound itself, to put Ness's awesome ass over the big stupid turtle. I was wrong.).

Link's gonna win it all again anyway, so it doesn't really matter. If I had my druthers, Kefka would win, but of all the realistic challengers to Link's throne, I'm pulling for Crono.

Yes. It's really funny but Zero really is more popular than Mega Man. Hell, Proto Man is more popular than the Blue Bombing Freak.

Kirby vs Ramza won't be a landside, but even yes. They WILL come for him as he is still well liked to get sufficient votes. We'll have to see how this fairs.

And yes, it is annoying that everyone comes out in droves for all the Square games, but uniquely go hiding/have no clue on who the hell everyone else is, I swear.

Link will lose the east. It WILL be either Kefka or Crono that get him. A match up against Crono will be close and he might squeek it out, but Link doesn't have the fanbase that Kefka does. Hopefully all those fans of his almighty evilness (like myself) will vote for him.

Sonic vs Ken: Fuck I'm such a fanboy for both of them...I guss Ken will have the upper hand with me since he wasnt in a dire Dreamcast launch title, but thats really nitpicking.

And I'm very pleased that the megaman fanbase (including myself) showed itself last round.

Mega Man and Zero are the only Mega Man characters to make it in. Though in my mind, Proto Man owns them all.

Oddly, I don't think CJayC (The guy that runs GameFAQs) distinguishes between regular Mega Man and Mega Man X. He'll likely use pics of both as the tournament rolls on.

As for why Crono vs. Kefka has to happen as early as round 2, everyone got seeded based on how many people nominated them, and the seeding works like the NCAA Basketball tournament (i.e., four #1 seeds, four #2 seeds, etc.). Oddly, this means that Crono, who made it to the FINAL FOUR last year, is seeded #4, while Kirby, who got ousted in ROUND ONE by Jill F'n Valentine of all people last year, is seeded #3. People are whack. Crono is a #4 seed, and Kefka is a #12 seed. Ergo, they meet in round 2.

As of 8:00 P.M. Eastern time, 5 hours to go in today's battle, it's very safe to say that Ken lost. The final results look to be around 70% for Sonic and 30% for Ken. About what I figured.

Actually, I think Magus will lose to Link and I hate that. Magus was one of the top three best characters (if not the best) in Chrono Trigger and I'm a fanboy of him. However, I just can't see him getting the votes to take down Link. I hate to admit that Magus might not beat him, and probably won't (unless the Square fanboys DO actually vote for him).

Aeris COULD take Cloud. It's really going to depend on the luck of whether or not people are sick of hearing about innocent little her or not. As far as I'm concerned. Actually I think Cloud can be up ended but that's just a dream. Cause I know those fan people will vote him cause they think he's the greatest RPG character of all time (The Gamefaqs Square boys that is). Ugh...

Yup. Aeris doesn't stand a chance if she beats Cloud. Hence why I say she COULD take Cloud, but most likely won't.

Since the first round of the East is wrapping up in an hour, here's a full preview of the upcoming South Division first round matches (Seeds in parentheses):

(1) Mario vs. (16) Captain Olimar (from Pikmin)

This is just cruel...

(8) Wario vs. (9) Shadow the Hedgehog

Now THIS one is an interesting match-up of evil doppelgangers, and likely sets the stage for Mario vs. Wario in the next round. Good booking here!

(5) Pac-Man vs. (12) Kefka

I'm sure Kefka can think of hundreds of amusing ways to torture a sphere with a mouth...

(4) Crono vs. (13) Tom Nook (From Animal Crossing)

This could be uglier than Mario vs. Olimar.

(6) Alucard vs. (11) Bomberman

Alucard's a pretty dependable Jobber to the Stars. People like him, just not anywhere near enough to beat the big names. He'll waste Bomberman.

(3) Kirby vs. (14) Ramza Beoulve (From Final Fantasy Tactics)

I picked Kirby, due to FFT's niche status compared to the other big Square games represented in the tournament. I will probably live to regret that.

(7) Gordon Freeman (from Half-Life) vs. (10) Max Payne

These games appeal to roughly the same audience. I give Max the edge due to name recognition, seeing as how his game is actually named for him. That puts him over to people who don't really know either; at least they'll probably recognize Max's name and vote for him. it doesn't really matter, seeing as how whoever wins gets impaled next round...

(2) Sephiroth vs. (15) Raziel (from Soul Reaver)

Won't be a complete squash, but a convincing victory nonetheless for the biggest 14-year-old-fanboy vote wrangler of them all.

Overall thoughts:

I picked Crono to take the division, but that's really just hope. Mario BARELY squeezed by him last year, so their division semifinal will be one to watch. The winner gets Sephiroth. I think he can take Mario, should Mario win. He can probably take Crono too, but I hope not.

Any other thoughts?

Ok... This is going to be a jobber's delight. Sorry Olimar, but Mario has you beat hands down. I think Mario will probably be kind though and use his Fireflower to finisher Olimar off.

This should be a decent contest. Although, I want Shadow to win. Wario will, but it's Shadow I want to get the duke. Wario with the Bullcap (or whatever the proper name is for the cap).

(5) Pac-Man vs. (12) Kefka

This is just insane. I mean, the best bad guy in all of RPGs against the eating machine? Hmph... Kefka via his laughter.

(4) Crono vs. (13) Tom Nook (From Animal Crossing)

Tom Nook's, I declare you defeated in the BIGGEST SQUASH EVARAH~! Crono gets the win via his almight Confuse technique.

(6) Alucard vs. (11) Bomberman

Alucard's the Benoit of video games. He's a captivating star in his own games, but has no charisma to get him over. Alucard via whiplash.

(3) Kirby vs. (14) Ramza Beoulve (From Final Fantasy Tactics)

This actually might be close. Although, I think Kirby will win because Ramza is cool but his status in the Squaresoft world is suspect. If he does beat Kirby, it's safe to say he might be a player. I'm still picking Kirby via his inhaling action.

Maybe I should properly explain how I'm using some terms...

I would call Sonic's 70/30 victory over Ken a blowout, but not necessarily a squash. I reckon Raziel will do likewise and summon up between 20-30% of the vote. I could be wrong.

A squash to me is like 90/10 or higher. I'm talking an EMBARRASSING mismatch. Examples include Link over AiAi from Super Monkey Ball, and the upcoming Mario vs. Captain Olimar "battle."
