Guest thetrendsetter Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 From 411 Music: According to MTV.com, Metallica are suing independant Canadian rockers Unfaith over what they call "unsanctioned usage of two chords [Metallica] have been using since 1982 : E and F." "People are going to get on our case again for this, but try to see it from our point of view just once," stated drummer Lars Ulrich. He adds that they're not saying they own the two chords, individually - "that would be ridiculous" - just that in that specific order, people have grown to associate E, F with their music, and their continued usage in the same song causes "confusion, deception and mistake in the minds of the public." You can read the whole surreal article here. Metallica.com has issued an official statement on the subject here. Credit: MTV.com, Metallica.com
Guest thetrendsetter Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 That's what I'm thinking... I have little knowledge of guitars, and how "chords" work, but I didn't know it was possible to sue someone over using the same style as another band...
Guest KingOfOldSchool Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Dude... Maybe stealing a set of lyrics or a specific music sample I can see.. But... Seriously, what the fuck is going through their heads? Not just the world's tallest dwarf, but the rest of them. What makes them think this is a good idea? You CAN'T claim two chords played in a certain order as your own, at least not to the point of going lawsuit happy over them. Besides which, if Metallica is looking for a cash settlement, how much money can an independant band have anyway?
Guest Choken One Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Lars is just fucking genius. The thing I thought you could sue someone over...
Guest Incandenza Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Are you unfamiliar with the internet?
Guest Choken One Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Yeah but it's not Like it was Metallicarules.com here... It was MTV.COM ya know one of the most credible sites around...
Guest Incandenza Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Go to MTV and Metallica's official websites, respectively. Actually type their urls yourself--don't follow those links in the story. EDIT: I hate that this thread made me go to MTV and Metallica's websites. Also, remember when it was reported that Eminem and 50 Cent got shot? This is the same thing.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 EDIT: I hate that this thread made me go to MTV and Metallica's websites Sinner
Guest Plushy Al Logan Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 And Metallica wonders why people are starting not to take them seriously anymore.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Because people pull pranks like this? See, in the other lawsuit cases (Revlon, Napster), I could at least SEE where they're coming from. Petty reasons to file a lawsuit? Yes. But did they have a reason? Yes. This one is so ludicrous it's hilarious, and is too preposterous for even LARS to file.
Guest Plushy Al Logan Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 If people like Lars can make stupid lawsuits, then I plan to sue him for "Emotional Distress" caused by the listening of both Load and Re-Load.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 I dare you. Not that I think you couldn't do it, but because it'd be fucking great to give it to them for releasing shitty NON-METALLICA albums. Only replace "Load" with "St. Anger."

I only listened to the title track on the radio, and it reminded me of System of a Down for some reason.
Guest razazteca Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 The people at 411 watch way too much Daily Show with Jon Stewart. I could go on a Lewis Black rant right now but I shall not.
Guest JBotter Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 If people like Lars can make stupid lawsuits, then I plan to sue him for "Emotional Distress" caused by the listening of both Load and Re-Load. "Unfaith" is Erik Ashley's band. Erik Ashley is also known as the guy behind ScoopThis. ScoopThis is all parody stuff. So yes, it's fake.
Guest Lethargic Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Oh my God. This is the second thread I've seen today where people actually thought this story was real. Really lowers my expectations for humanity when people can read total bullshit like that and believe it's real. Hell, didn't ANYBODY click the links in the story? If you click to read more, it takes you to ScoopThis. If you click to read Metallica's press confernce it takes you to ScoopThis. Gee, do you think MAYBE it was a parody article by ScoopThis?
Guest Youth N Asia Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 "People are going to get on our case again for this, but try to see it from our point of view just once," stated drummer Lars Ulrich. Well stop being such a fucking asshole then!
Rob E Dangerously Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Gee, do you think MAYBE it was a parody article by ScoopThis? but they said it from MTV!!
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 I laughed for a long time when I saw that article. Especially that picture of Lars on the fake MTV page, that was priceless.
Guest Factory Worker Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 "People are going to get on our case again for this, but try to see it from our point of view just once," stated drummer Lars Ulrich. Well stop being such a fucking asshole then! Way to tell off a fake quote, man.
Guest saturnmark4life Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 If this hadn't been posted as a serious topic, it'd be pretty funny.
rising up out of the back seat-nuh Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 I dare you. I only listened to the title track on the radio, and it reminded me of System of a Down for some reason. Because it sucks? Also, I wouldn't put it past any band to sue over continued use of a chord progression if they could prove that it was diagnostic of their work. Particularly Metallica...

Guest Memphis Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 In the nicest way possible, you're all idiots. M
Guest redbaron51 Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 In the nicest way possible, you're all idiots. M i know the article is fake. i'm just stating that lars is a tool (see St. Anger/and seeing them live)
Guest jimmy no nose Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 Jimmy Kimmel believed it. He brought it up on his show and had their guitar played play E F so that we know which chords not to use in our recordings. I knew it couldnt be true, then I saw this.
