A team that was lauded to be the most athletic, most entertaining team to watch, and a potentially devestating team for the opposition, will have to rebuild AGAIN. Michael Olowokandi is purported to sign a 3 year, 16 million dollar offer with the T' Wolves. Corey Maggette has already signed a 6 year, 45 million dollar offer with the Jazz. Andre Miller has signed a 6 year, 52 million dollar offer with the Nuggets. Elton Brand will sign a 6 year, 82.5 million dollar contract with the Heat. Even if Sterling matches the Heat's offer, the Heat will undoubtedly get Lamar Odom, a player Pat Riley "has coveted for years." It's all Donald Sterling's fault; he is the cheapest bastard on the planet. The Clippers, unfortunately, will be lucky to win 15 games next year.

With that said, I can't forsee Kobe joining the Clippers, but you never know. If anyone can turn the Clippers into a legitimate basketball club it's Kobe Bryant or Kevin Garnett. Knowing Kobe -- from the press -- he would enjoy taking on a challenge as formidable as this.

Just because they match Brand doesn't mean they won't match Odom as well. Odom's deal probably won't be as high as Brand's anyway. Plus if they lose Miller, Maggette and Olowokandi, all the money they would've used on those guys could go Odom's way. 2. Even if they don't match Odom, why does he automatically go to the Heat? Maybe he goes to the Spurs or Nuggets instead. Or gasp, even stay in LA. I just don't get why everywhere I read everybody keeps talking like it's a done deal that the Heat are gonna get either Brand or Odom but there's a good chance they won't get either one because nobody can predict what the Clippers will do EVER.

Exactly if people would just quit supporting the team until they prove they deserve to be supported, things would change. But as long as people continue to buy tickets, Sterling will never change because he simply has no real reason to.

Or, at least, he's got to coerce Sterling to get the hell out of L.A. The Clippers -- though admittedly undermined by Sterling -- don't deserve to play on the same court or venue as the Lakers.

But all is not lost because Sterling HAS to spend some money due to the Clipper rule – each team must have a minimum $42 million in payroll next season or else they must pay a fine much like teams who go over the cap. As of this writing the Clips’ payroll for next season is $14 million. That means they have to spend at least $28 million more or else Stern will levy fines on the team that would most likely eclipse that amount. That being said, this is how I see things shaping up in the end: 1. Sign Odom for $8-10 million within the next 2 weeks. 2. Match Brand’s offer after we get Odom in the bag. Fuck you PAT RILEY. 3. Match Maggette’s $7 million/year contract, if not we still have Quentin Richardson. 4. Bye bye Andre Miller. You were a disappointment to this team and this city. We still have Marko Jaric and Keyon Dooling. Not a big loss. 5. Kandi…good riddance. This is what you call addition by subtraction. We have Chris Kamen, Wang Zhi Zhi and our 2 second year phenoms in Chris Wilcox and Melvin Ely. Of course this only works unless Sterling does something stupid, like not pay. With that being said, I will go back into hiding now until the Clips do me proud and sign someone.

I know the LA tag is what gets Sterling some of his money, but 2 LA teams? If that's the case, why dont we have 2 NY teams and 2 Chicago teams since they are just as big of a market as LA?

Or could they work a deal with another team or just sign one year deals with the Clippers? If LA is smart, and they know all these players don't want to play for them. They would match all the offer sheets and then work sign and trades.
Guest Ripper Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 Everyone is saying that the Clippers will lose either Odom or Brand to the heat because the Heat is the only other team that can offer Odem or Brand that much money. Plus, once he signed the offer sheet, no other team can deal with Brand. If the Clippers match that huge deal that the Heat offered, they won't be able to match what the heat can throw at Odom. It will become a game of simple math, just figuring how much it would take to put LA over the limit and offering Odom a contract for that much. The Clippers are going to have to match some offers because a. no free agents are going to sign with the clippers and b.they won't have enough players. I've said it before and will say it now, The heat WANT Lamar Odom...they are using the Brand deal to all but guarentee that they get him. Unless of course Odom chooses to stay with the Clippers. And outside of Piakowski, who would do something like that.

Sterling would just have to be willing to spend some of his millions. On Sundays, in the LA Times, you can’t turn a page in the travel or California section without seeing “Another Donald Sterling Enterprise,” ads all over the place. The man is making hands over fist, hopefully, he’ll think about the fans who have been loyal and supportive throughout his frugal reign as owner.

He won't be able too without filling out the roster with CBA players a league minimum. And the way the contract is structured, he would have to give 20+ million of the contract THIS YEAR. Cheap or no cheap, he would be stupid to match this deal and if he did, he couldn't sign Odom without running into luxuary tax land, where even the more fre spending owners try to avoid.

I’m not sure how these contracts work but this front loaded stuff is a bunch of crap. Why couldn’t an owner sign Shaq, Kobe, KG, Dunacan and McGrady and structure the deals so that they each get a chunk of the money in a different year? For instance, if they all signed 5 year $100 million deals, why couldn’t they just pay Shaq $40 million the first year and divide the other $60 million over the remaining 4 years. Then, have Kobe get a chunk of his contract in year 2, KG in year 3, etc…

Remember, if he doesn't report to his meetings properly he will be considered in violation of the league rules and be outta there. And that still wouldn't solve the problems with them needing to fill out the roster since they will definately lose 2-3 starters from last year.

Maggette is only getting $7 million the first year, Brand is getting like $20 and if they straight up give Odom a fair offer, Sterling can use the $30 million of the team’s profits this year plus the $15 million that he will get from the likes of Jerry Buss, Mark Cuban and Paul Allen for going over the salary cap. In other words, he would not even have to tap his petty cash account to pay these guys.
