Guest Polish_Rifle Report post Posted July 22, 2003 The LA Times is reporting that the Clips gave Odom an offer of 3 years and $24 million. Odom and his agent has flown out to Miami to meet with the Heat in hopes of securing a more lucrative offer. I think that’s both a smart and fair offer from the Clips. $8 million to match his talent and potential and 3 years just in case he falls back on old habits (i.e. drugs, injuries, inconsistency). Guest Polish_Rifle Report post Posted July 23, 2003 Apparently, the Heat are set to offer Odom a 6 year, $60 million contract.
Guest Ripper Report post Posted July 23, 2003 And Lamar is from Florida...Orlando I believe. He will sign with the Heat and be kicked out of the league within a year. I am calling it. The worst thing he needs is to be around his friends he grew up with. BAD BAD BAD
Guest Polish_Rifle Report post Posted July 23, 2003 I think he's from Queens, NY but I agree that it is risky to sign him to long tem contract. That's why I think the Clippers offer of 3 years at $24 million is fair.
Guest Polish_Rifle Report post Posted July 24, 2003 From Thursday's Miami Herald... Lamar Odom came to Miami on Tuesday night and left Wednesday afternoon with no offer sheet from the Heat. The Los Angeles Clippers restricted free agent, though, is still hopeful the Heat will make him an offer as early as today. ''We talked, and hopefully in the next 48 hours they can come up with something,'' Odom said Wednesday. ``[The talks] were very serious.'' Odom met with coach Pat Riley and the front-office staff at AmericanAirlines Arena, then Riley had a closed-door meeting with Odom's agent, Jeff Schwartz, to talk contract numbers. The Heat, which has about $12 million to spend on free agents, is believed to be willing to offer Odom a six-year deal for about $60 million. But Riley, who has been hesitant to sign players to long-term deals, especially with Brian Grant's and Eddie Jones' onerous contracts still on the books, might be backing off that high number despite his fondness for the 6-10 Odom. Earlier in the free agency period, Riley said there was only one player he would overpay for, and it was assumed it was the Clippers' Elton Brand, who signed a six-year, $82 million offer sheet. Riley might also be hesitant to offer another Clippers restricted free agent an offer sheet after the Clippers quickly matched the Heat's offer to Brand to retain him. With Odom, the Clippers likely would use more of their 15-day window before deciding whether to match the offer. If the Heat signs Odom to an offer sheet, the team will be unable to sign other free agents until the Clippers make a decision. If the Heat passes on Odom this year, he could still decide to sign a one-year deal with the Clippers and become an unrestricted free agent next year, when the Heat likely would make another run at him. But given Odom's history of injury -- he missed 86 games the past two seasons -- the forward would prefer to sign a long-term deal this offseason and avoid the risk. If Miami does not sign Odom to an offer sheet, the options in free agency are very limited. Restricted free agent Jason Terry, who played in Atlanta last season, is not an upgrade at shooting guard from Jones and is not a true point guard. Elden Campbell is a reasonable option at center, but one source said the 35-year-old, who has a history of knee problems, would not consider Miami because of Riley's reputation for overworking players. For now, however, Odom still remains a realistic option.
