WWE Smackdown House Show Results From Bangkok, Thailand (7/16/03)

Thanks to Ed Gittins for the following report:

I think that this is the first time that the WWE has visited Thailand and there is quite a following out here, so the arena was both full and excited. The advertising had lead us to believe that Undertaker would be here, but being WWE advertising this was not true. Nonetheless, a good show, lapped up by the crowd and myself. Not much in the way of Western entertainment makes it out here, so it was great to see my favorite waste of time live after a couple of years in the wilderness so to speak.

(1) Ultimo Dragon beat Jamie Knoble (w/Nidia) No one seemed to know who Ultimo was, unsurprisingly, and even though he is Asian and did the traditional Thai "wai" greeting to the crowd the response to his entrance was luke-warm at best. All night the WWE assumed that all Asians naturally support other Asians, which of course is not true, just like when the WWE goes to the UK a French wrestler will not get cheered on the back of his being European. Anyway, both worked hard and crisply, and Ultimo won back the crowd with his regular spots and a good series of near falls (including a long series of pinning combinations) towards the end eventually saw Ultimo use his flip over reverse DDT thing for the win. As with all the heels at the show, the very polite Thai's very politely clapped them on their way out despite booing their socks off through the rest of the bout.

(2) Billy Gunn pinned Sean O'Haire with the Famasser. Billy Gunn got a good reception and worked the crowd well, although this wasn't difficult to do. Gunn tried to get the crowd to sing along with the "Ass man" song which fell a little flat as most of the crowd speak about 5 words of English and ‘Ass' isn't one of them. Short, quite fun, one-sided, and exactly what you would expect.

Then we had a bikini contest with Sable, Torrie, Dawn, and Nidia. Usual rubbish received a loud response from the fans more through amazement than anything else, as Thai women look very dissimilar from these silicone enhanced amazons. Torrie was the hot favorite (because she "wai"ed the crowd at the start it was fairly obvious who was going to win) and duly won, before a feeble cat fight ensued which included Sable screwing up an Irish whip.

(3) A-Train pinned Spanky with the Derailer. Crowd hated Train, who did his hissy-fit stuff before the match which looked a touch unenthusiastic anyway. Longer than expected, mostly with Albert on offense with rest holds. After failing to catch Spanky coming off the top, Albert Derailed him, left the ring and then returned to deliver a Baldo Bomb. Before he could batter Spanky after a second return, Funaki made the save to another frosty we-don't-like-the-Japanese-much reception, and after Spanky delivered the sliced bread number 2, Albert bailed to polite applause as the faces soaked up the polite applause.

(4) Chris Benoit & Rhyno beat Kidman & Matt Hardy. Benoit got the best pop of the night so far, and Hardy's was not far off. A very poor match, with screw-ups and epic chinlocks aplenty was only saved by the finish where everyone bar Kidman hit their finisher, Kidman went for the pin on the recently twist-of-fated Benoit and was crossfaced for his trouble for the tap-out.

Intermission, followed by;

(5) Rey Mysterio pinned John Cena with the 619/springboard legdrop combo. Cena came out first and tried to rile the non-English speaking crowd with his Thuganomics which went completely over most people's heads. He also had a go at Taiwanese food, not recognizing that Taiwan is a different country from Thailand. Rey came out to a huge reception, and they then proceeded to stall for a long time which provided some good comedy moments. Cena worked the crowd really well, as did Rey, and when they eventually got around to wrestling it was slick big guy/little guy stuff. Cena hit a great stalling vertical, where he posed with his free arm whilst Rey was up; funny. Rey got the win after a good match and then chucked out and drank cans of the local brew, which was sponsoring the event, Stone Cold style. He even spoke a little Thai.

(6) The Best Damn Tag Team in the World (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin) beat Eddie Guerrero & Tajiri. Eddie and Tajiri got huge receptions, especially Tajiri thus completely disproving my above theory on Thai/Japanese relations from earlier. TBDTTINW were booed like no one else, not even getting the polite applause on exit; wow. After an age of stalling, the match began and was a good one, with Eddie being the star of the show even when not in the ring with his hilarious tag rope routine. Tajiri pulled out a special spot for Bangkok - a Thai boxing style series of knees into Haas who was backed against the ropes, which drew a huge Thai boxing verbal response from the crowd; difficult to articulate, get a video. It was a great spot; Tajiri seems to know his Mauy Thai. A long match filled with signature moves and decent psychology ended with a ref bump, belt shot and title retention by the dastardly heels, who were cheated at the last by Eddie and Tajiri who ran off with the belts while the heels celebrated. The best mach of the night, if a little inconsistent in storyline terms (for a little, read a lot).

Before the main event, the announcer informed the 5 percent of the crowd that could understand him that all the WWE stars just loved coming to Bangkok, Japan. Get the man an atlas, or a brain. Or both.

(7) Brock Lesnar beat Kurt Angle and The Big Show. A preview of their upcoming PPV match, this was a lot better than I expected despite the fact Show was in the ring for a lot of the time. Although I suspect the PPV may have a different finish, this was a tightly worked match with only a little stalling (again, I suspect this may be different from the PPV) and some credible spots, including a two vs. one test of strength which was a first for me at least. There was also surprisingly little one on one action for a WWE three-way. Show dominated most of the match but was then knocked out of the ring where he lay as if shot dead for a few minutes while Kurt and Brock finally got their hands on each other- the story being that up till now they had teamed up against Show. Rising from the grave, Show re-entered and all the finishers were applied, bar the F5 of course, until Angle was out from a choke slam and the resulting F5 was enough for the decision and a huge pop.

Overall, a great evening if a little rough around the edges, but beggars can't be choosers, right? About 9,000 sold out the Impact Arena, the atmosphere was a mixture of respectful and appreciative Japanese and whoopin' an' hollerin' Western. The matches were good after the interval, and the main event bodes well for Vengeance. Everyone went home happy.

Biggest Babyface Pops:

1. Brock Lesnar

2. Tajiri

3. Kurt Angle

4. Eddie

5. Chris Benoit

Most Heel Heat:

1. TBTTITWP

2. John Cena

3. A-Train

4. The announcer

5. Big Show

I cannot wait for the Steph/Sable match.

Bangkok, Japan?

That's pathetic.

And why did they turn Eddie again? He and Tajiri are great as a tag team.

There is probably a delay of some sort.
