Here is the article. I am sure this alternate ending will be included on the Region 1 DVD since it is on the UK DVD. I won't give any spoilers since you can read them at the link. I am curious to see this "grim" ending to see how it plays out different and I would have liked to see the packed theater of people walk out with a different feeling then they did. Thoughts?

I actually mini-ranted on this in my LiveJournal. I'm happy that it's being put back into American prints, but I'm pissed that it wasn't there from the beginning. Now I have to pay to see it again...fine film, one of the best I've seen all year, I just can't really afford to see it again.

Mainstream American audience = bastards, for not letting it be there from the beginning. There's no way a post-apocalyptic movie can sensibly have a "happy ending".

Pah. Twasn't good enough the first time, and the "downer ending" doesn't really sound that great either. I agree with Roger Ebert...

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

...that the proper ending would have been for the plane to circle around again and strafe our heroes to death. Grimly satisfying as that might have been, actually, I'm not sure the current ending isn't the best one. In zombie movies, you've got two general themes that recur: triumph of the human spirit against adversity, and how many is often just as gruesome or horrible as the zombies. The ending that's being added kinda bridges these two, but I suppose I'll have to see if it works or not...but I think the movie itself is too up and down for a mere change of ending to save it.

Well, I've seen it four times in theatre's already. I'll be in for a fifth, now, I suppose. :D

Guys, I haven't seen the movie and I don't want to be spoiled, so for those that have read the article, is the ending actually going to be different in the theatrical version?

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

The original ending was actually nixed by DANNY BOYLE, who thought the movie needed a happier one that still left questions as to the fate of the heroes. I forget where I read it, but Boyle filmed the theatrical ending and showed it to the screenwriter, who agreed that Boyle's "happy" ending was the better one.

I guess THAT wasn't really a spoiler, but this one is. The alternate ending is...

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

When Jim is taken into the hospital by the two girls (I forget their names at the moment), he flatlines, and dies of the gunshot wound the general gave him back at the military compound. The two girls then hang their heads, cry a little bit, and walk out of the hospital.

I have read two different reports. One says the original ending is being restored into the movie, and the other one says Same Movie, Same Ending, after the credits, they SHOW the original ending........

ok..... if you play the games and then watch that movie I don't see how you could not be pissed at how they butchered a good story. but as a stand alone movie I still thought it sucked. Will there never be a GOOD Video Game movie besides both Mortal Kombat Films?

Well, I've heard that they might be releasing Dead to Rights and Max Payne in the near future. And quite frankly, those will be hard to fuck up, because the storylines are simplistic.

But nearly every video game movie has sucked. All of them stray from the plot of the video game, which people want to see on the bif screen, not the characters in different weirdass scenarios.

I thought the Resident Evil movie was good. I thought the ending was the best part, and it screams for a sequel which is in production.

I'm a huge RE fan and even I'm not this fickle about the movie. What would you have them do? Follow the exact same storyline as the games so that we all know how it turns out? What would be the point of seeing it?

no not the same exact story but 28 days later and the way they did things reminded me of what I thought the RE movie should have been like. the RE movie did not make any sense to me and i didn't like it. Now i will give the sequel a fair chance and not hold it against the first one.

First of all, Charlie, try putting some commas in those run-on sentences.

Second, if the simple plot of Resident Evil didn't make sense to you - then I am dumbfounded as to how you were able to understand the basic premise of 28 Days Later...

THAT'S the downbeat ending? Christ almighty...that sounds more melodramatic than anything else. Boo! Hiss! Since the article I read online in the L.A. times just said "downbeat ending" I figured that, given the differences between mainstream movie tastes and mine, that "downbeat" meant "unhappy" and by "unhappy" meant...

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

...like in every zombie/post-apocalyptic film ever made, where humanity doesn't survive because of the sheer overwhelming number of zombies (e.g. Zombi 2). While I'm in the spoiler tag, can anyone think of ANY zombie film with a "happy ending"? I haven't seen as many as I'd like to have, but the closest thing I can come up with is Dawn of the Dead, where they barely escape by helicopter, but the world is still overwhelmed with mobs of zombies, and it doesn't seem like they'd last more than a few days anyway, with a pregnant woman about ready to give birth and nowhere to go. Actually, I guess you could say Dead/Alive has a "happy ending" as well, IIRC, but that's more of a gore comedy/spoof anyway.

...but alas, they mean "unhappy" as in "unhappy". Nevermind, I'll just wait for the DVD.

I'd say that...

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

Day of the Dead had a "kind of" happy ending. The three survivors escape to some tropical island.

This is the best news I have heard in a while. Now I have a good excuse to see the movie for the 5th time I think it will be.
