Mini Batman film

Recommended Posts

Guest TUS_02

I watched it Sunday night...

It's really tough to explain how I felt about it since I don't read comics. I will say that if you do DL it... DON'T READ THE SPOILERS... like the one I'm about to give...

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

What makes this movie weird is that for the first 2 minutes, Batman is fighting Joker... then THE FUCKING ALIEN comes down and takes Joker and kills him and then jumps on Batman... just when you thought it couldn't get weirder... THE FUCKING PREDITOR blasts the Alien to hell. Preditor and Batman fight and I'll leave it at that...

I do suggest people who do read comics to check it out... it's a well made short.

Well, there was already a thread about (with spoilers) here. Personally, while it was well made, I didn't like the plot...if you can even call it that. Seems like a squandered opportunity, but then again, what are you gonna do in under 10 minutes? Well, ALOT if you don't suck but this one sucks the proverbial meat missile.

That short was better then any of the other Batman movies except the first one.

Cute short, but methinks someone has a lot of disposable income for purchasing fanboy costumes. ;)

The change in plot was a bit ham-fisted as well, but hey, anything to show up those wishy-washy Hollywood execs who can't seem to greenlight a big-time Dark Knight flick, eh?

Crucifixio is exactly right. The whole twist really took what was a very cool short and turned it into silly camp on the level of the 60's show. It kinda sucks because the first 4 minutes with the Joker and Batman is done so friggin perfect. Then it becomes a comedy.

But, it's not like it was made for people to really watch, it was made as an audition tape for Warner Brothers to show what the film-makers could do. The same thing Dan Poole did when he made Green Goblin's Last Stand trying to get a job on the Spiderman movie. So it wasn't really telling a story or trying to make the perfect Batman movie, they were just showing off their talent.

The same kids that made Batman Beyond Year One are making their own 10 minute Batman short called Dark Justice. Pictures of it are up here....

The Batman and Joker scene was only about 1 and a half minutes long. I thought the twist was not that great but stil better the most of the movies. And to compare the short to the 60's show is quite idiotic.

that was a pretty cool short film imo, who cares if it was all weird with the Alien and Predator, it was cool.....

great production values for a short film too, the only thing i didn't like was the guy who played the Joker

everything ese was great...

Why is it idiotic? The old show made me laugh. It was funny. The second half of this made me laugh. It was funny. That's all I meant.

I thought it was cool, the joker couldnt act for shit. The twist was cool though, it was good for a short.

EDIT: On second thought, if this were a first year film student I'd definately be impressed, but AICN was saying these are some pretty well skilled film veterans, so it's not quite as impressive.

Better than the other Batman movies?

*dies laughing*

Go watch MASK OF THE PHANTASM. Better than this. And as close as a great Batman film as you're probably going to get, unless WB really surprises us next time out.

I watched Phantasm for the first time a couple of weeks ago and agree. It's a great movie. Although I didn't like the villain that much. Maybe I was just spoiled because I had just watched Return of the Joker again where Hamill is awesome as the Joker.

PS: Do you know these movies and, if yes, are they any good:

I thought Sub-Zero was the weakest of the animated movies. Not bad but not as good as the others.

The Batman Beyond movie is just the first 2 or 3 episodes of the series. The only real Batman Beyond movie is Return of the Joker.

I always wondered why Mask of the Phantasm took the Reaper's storyline from Year Two and ripped it off. Basically all they did was changed a couple of things here and there, renamed the character and used the same story. If that's what they wanted to do, why not just use the Reaper? The first time I watched it that was all I could think of. Just kept wondering what was up with that. Was it intentional and they HAD to change the Reaper for some reason or did they even know they ripped it off?

Thanks, good to know.

I can't help you with the reaper thing because I don't read the comics anymore. I just watch the movies and TV series, but maybe I'll go to my old comic store again sometime to catch up.

It didn't take it to camp, dude. You can't have camp without humor and this film presented the Alien and Predators as deadly serious.

My stance is this, if it happened in the comic books, its fair game for adaptation in another medium. Batman/Predator was actually a cool series of comic books. I've never read Batman/Aliens or its sequel so i can't vouch for it but... I'm willing to look the other way on the Aliens and Predators thing.

Oh and your later question about MotP and Year Two, since its licensed by DC Comics it didn't "rip off" Year Two, it ADAPTED it for children. Big difference.

But the movie was still rated not suitable for children because of Phantasm's murders, wasn't it?

I don't know the American ratings system that well. PG is parental guidance, right? OK, I guess I was wrong then.

Yeah, Toy Story was PG. G is only given out to the tamest of children's movies.

I would feel the same way if that was what I expected going in. But it was hyped to be the "perfect" Batman on film and all the pictures before hand made it look like a Batman vs Joker showdown. So that's what I expected from it. I did not expect it to just go crazy all of the sudden. And seeing Batman fighting men dressed up as Aliens DID come off campy to me. It would be different if it was a "real" movie that had a good buildup and story to explain why Batman is fighting Aliens and Predators, but in this 8 minute short, it didn't work for me. Still looked cool, but I thought it was silly. But, once again, we're discussing this like it was SUPPOSED to make sense when it wasn't. It's not even meant to be seen by us. It was only a guy trying to show off how well he can direct action and it did that VERY WELL. I'd much rather have this guy directing Aliens vs Predator than Paul Anderson. haha

I never really viewed the show or the movie as being for children. If you wanna see a show for children watch that new Teen Titans show. Geez, that show is horrible. I always found the Batman animated to be pretty adult oriented which was exactly why so many people like it. But I don't see how changing the Reaper's name to Phantasm and painting him gray instead of red makes him better for children. Just as long as he doesn't hack people up to pieces, the color of his suit doesn't really matter.

I'm in agreement with you first point totally. In all the hype we kinda forgot that this was just an 8 Minute fan movie- made by soem guys for fun. People held this up as the holy grail of comic cinema and it isn't.

Oh, and while fans our age would dispute whether TAS was for kids or not, parents take their kids to see cartoon movies. Cartoons taht are good for kids and adults (As Phantasm was) can make a ton of money. I wouldn't take a small child to see a strict adaptation of Batman: Year Two.

I like the fact that people got together and made a short film, that's always a good thing.

The proplem is introduced once you take what we have here and really look at it. It has no plot or anything, and it all came down here to a bunch of Batman fanboys going "Hey, we have all of this *stuff* so let's put it all together just for the hell of it".

I just wish more thought was put into it, that's all.

Aside from that, it was pretty well made.

Sorry, let me rephrase what I said.

The short was better then all of the live action movies. Except the first one.

The animated movies rocked.

Breakdown of this movie:

70% crappy looking action sequences

20% shitty acting and poorly written dialogue

10% dramatic posing
