Bored Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Sandberg will get in eventually but it may take a couple of more years. Next year Molitor and Eckersley will be eligible for the first time and will likely be voted in. There will then been a three year gap before the 2001 retired class of McGwire, Gwynn, and Ripken are eligible so Sanderg will likely get voted in during that time.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Is Eck a sure fire first ballot guy? I'm wondering if his years has a decent starter will hurt the 7-8 dominate years has a closer.
Guest alkeiper Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 He did have a no hitter as a starter.
Guest alkeiper Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 That's all he has. For Eckersley, its one piece of a long range of accomplishments.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Don't get me wrong. Eck is 1st ballot in my book. Just wondering if he's a lock or not.
Guest CanadianChris Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 He is definitely a lock, the first reliever to be considered so. Hopefully his election will open the doors for other relievers who deserve to be enshrined (thinking specifically of Goose Gossage).
Guest Vern Gagne Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Here's a poll from ESPN. Read before you vote. ESPN.COM
Guest alkeiper Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Not surprised at the results. Piazza was left off, though many considered the "if he retired today" I suppose. Larkin gets the shaft, just like Trammell has.
Guest undisputedjericho Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 Kenny Rogers has thrown a perfecto as well.

Larkin gets the shaft, just like Trammell has. That's wrong though. Piazza was the best catcher for nearly 10 years. The numbers he put up where maybe the best ever for a catcher.
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 No love for I-Rod in this thead? For my money he's better than Piazza and arguably the best all-around catcher in the history of the sport.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 Agreed. I-Rod offensivley was close to Piazza, and totally blows him away defensivley. His numbers are good this year has well. It looks like he's returning somewhat to his old form.
Guest Some Guy Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 Piazza is a bad catcher, he's a good hitter. If he played in teh AL he'd be a DH. He can't throw, can't block a pitch, can't call a good game, can't stay healthy at this point. He's not a good or even adequate catcher, if he was the Mets wouldn't be moving him to 1B.
Guest alkeiper Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 The Mets aren't moving Piazza because he's a bad catcher. They're moving him because he's 35, and catchers have a BAD aging record. Piazza doesn't throw out a high percentage of runners, but he's been an adequate catcher. I-Rod offensivley was close to Piazza, and totally blows him away defensivley. His numbers are good this year has well. It looks like he's returning somewhat to his old form. I-Rod and Piazza aren't even close. I-Rod career has hit .305/.342/.489. Piazza's hit .321/.388/.576. That's almost 100 points of slugging.
Guest Grand Slam Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 Barry Larkin was the first SS ever to be a 30 HR / 30 Steals guy a few years before the HR explosion when it was still an accomplishment to hit more than 20 HRs. Add into that the Championship, the amazing defense, the MVP, the multiple All-Star selections, and I don't see how he isn't a first balloter. Hell, I remember even Ozzie Smith said Larkin is a HoFer.
