Steinbrenner issues statement.

NEW YORK (AP) The Boss has a message for Boston: Don't celebrate just yet.

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was bothered enough after his team lost two straight games against the Red Sox to issue a statement Monday about the series.

''We didn't play well in Boston, but I'm not getting down on anyone,'' Steinbrenner said. ''It's a long season and a long way to go. They haven't won anything yet.''

The Yankees won the opener of the three-game series, but the Red Sox came back with wins Saturday and Sunday to cut New York's lead in the AL East to 1½ games.

Earlier this month, the Yankees and Red Sox split a four-game series. Steinbrenner cried tears of joy when New York beat Boston after Red Sox starter Pedro Martinez hit Alfonso Soriano and Derek Jeter, the first two batters.

''I don't know what was going through his mind, but if it's what it looked like, it's not good,'' Steinbrenner said at the time. ''It's not good for his team, not good for baseball.''

Wow, this is odd. When was the last time he made a statement like that after losing a series? Methinks the Sox finally have the Empire scared...

Why would the Yankees be scared of the Choke Artists that Boston has been?

I dunno, because he has a bullpen comprised of Benitez, Hammond and Orosco?

What the fuck does 2 >1 mean?

Ohhh....Sox won the series...They are still chokers for life.

2 > 1 means 2 is a greater number than 1. It's simple math, really. If they were chokers for life, they wouldn't have scored six runs in the seventh inning after dogging it the previous six. Only chokers this past weekend were the Yankees.

Silly Red Sox Fans.

Look at the books

26 Yankees

5 Red Sox

I think he means that he Sox alway find a way to choke when it actually means something.

Ask Bucky Dent.

Yeah because SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many members of the 1978 team are still with the Sox. Have you even paid attention this season? This team is different. They bounce back from tough losses. The don't get imtimidated by pinstripes.

Oh yeah, but I forgot, they're cursed n junk...

If anyone should be scared it should be the Yankees. Their dominance in the AL East is starting to dwindle. The fact that their bullpen and their whole team is pretty much getting older and the sox's team is pretty young all the way around. If not this year, next year the Sox will take the AL east.

I can't believe these red sox fans...

Haven't you lived history? THEY CAN'T WIN!

They are incapable of success.

Tampa Bay will win the world series before Boston ever does again

No, Sox can't win when it counts. I guess this past weekend was a spring training redux...

This is typical of red sox marks...They cling onto these little series like they mean something in the end...

God, two extremes battling each other over nonsense make both types of fans look bad.

Sox fans = YAY! We won a series! We're taking it all BABY~! Curse is DEAD!

Yankee fans = Sox can't win SHIT! Sox will NEVER win!

How about this? Yes, the Sox won this weekend. Does it mean that they're going to win it all this season? Who fucking knows? For all I know, they could win the AL East and lose in the playoffs. Still not a World Series Victory, which is what the supposed "curse" is based on!

I'm a Yankee fan...and I'll admit it: The Red Sox will eventually win. Dominance only lasts for so long. Be it next year or the year after that....or hell, even this year. But stop the madness, please.

Hmmmmm ... history has proven a team can't win, so they obviously never will, eh? How about them Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Wait, I must have overlooked their previous Super Bowl wins, because they just won one after historically being a losing organization. And the Patriots the year before before that.

Oh, you'll say that this is baseball that we're talking about, so the Bucs or Pats don't count. How about the Angels? History's proven that they can't win, so they must have not won the World Series last year, huh?

Yes, it's way too early for Sox fans to start declaring the Yankee dynasty dead and start planning the World Series parade, but a lot of Yankees fans aren't acknowledging that this team is the weakest, most vulnerable team since their recent run started.

well the angels made something and WON the damn thing...

Sox have shown again and again that they will choke when it counts.

Mother fucker, these games counted!

They weren't pre-season!

They weren't exhibition!

These games counted as much as the Yankees bullpen stinks, and that's a lot!

Did it win them the world series already? NUH UH.

The only thing that counts is if you won the world series...and the Red Sox haven't managed to pull that feat off in 70 years.

Oh, so only 7 games count the whole baseball season?

Didn't know that...

Even though I'm for the most part apathetic about baseball, I'd love to see the Sox win it all just to put an end to this fucking "curse" talk.

Unless it means doing what the NY Rangers did and finally win the big one only to become a laughingstock for the next decade. I'm happier being a perpetual contender that doesn't win rather than a "win one time and then fall out of contention forever" type of fluke.

The only seven that mean anything.

A team could go 162-0 and not win the Series and the year would be a failure

I can't believe for what must be the FIRST time in TSM history...Me and Anglesault soundly agree on something.

Well, I can say two things are certain:

- This IS the weakest Yankees team since they started their dominance in the 90s, and this is the strongest Sox team in that same time period.

- The Yankees have a tough stretch ahead in the next few weeks against Oakland and Seattle and the Sox play 4 consecutive series with those two teams in August.

Conclusion: These are going to be two VERY interesting months between these two teams. Those last two series in late August - early September should have a playoff atmosphere.

Oh, and this past weekends' series? THAT'S baseball.

Pedro can't carry the rest of the starting staff to a divisional title. They won't beat out the Yankees, without another quality starter.

Pedro really hasn't carried the staff at all this year. He's 7-2, granted a lot of bullpen badness and lack of runs hurt that but he ain't carrying the staff. Lowe, Burkett, and Wakefield have been about as good as can be expected.

I think Georgie is startign to lose it a bit. Crying after games, bugging for no reason (although that's not unusual), and desperation moves (Benitez, Mondesi, and a few others), and attacking his team captain's social life.

But to quote Jimy Williams, "When Georgie Porgie talks I don't listen."

Well I do, but it's usually just to laugh at his paranoia and stupidity when it comes to baseball.

As far as the petty Yanks/Sox fans shit, the season isn't over, bad things have happened to teh Sox in teh past, good things fpr the Yanks, does mean that trend will continue? Who knows? Does that mean they will reverse? Hopefully.

So either bad or mediocre. Pedro doesn't have the Wins, but besides Derek Lowe you really think Burkett and Wakefield are reliable.

The Boss is just being himself. He usually gets mad at his own team, but this time he's attempting to put the spotlight on him, and off of the Yankees.

Guest Some Guy

Well Lowe, Burkett, and Wakefield have been pretty consistant all year. Burkett was eitehr bad in teh 1st or 5th and decent for the rest, Wakefield is what he is and Lowe is doing fine. The Sox certainly could use a Colon, Ponson, Vazquez type guy to be teh #2 and take pressure off both Pedro and Lowe. Hopefully one of those guys are only 3 days away.
