It's a shame you have to pay tuition for the garbage they "teach" you in the classroom, though... This comment boggles me. Maybe I'm just fortunate in my class selection, but the majority of what I study is stuff I'm interested in. You get a lot of worthwhile stuff out of the classroom, but you get it inside too. I now work third shift in a warehouse shipping cigarettes. I was a Chemistry major (Pre med technically, but it's mostly Chem and Bio curriculum), with a minor in Psych. I wish my parents could afford to pay my tuition, but instead I've taken out so many loans my grandchildren will probably be paying them off long after I'm gone. Still, though, I don't regret my decision to go to college. I'm also a senior in college, with a major in Business Management and Communication Studies and I have 8 classes left to take before I graduate. So close, yet so far away. And yet I'm still not entirely sure what the hell I wanna do after I graduate. Long term goal--own my own photography studio. Short term goal--who the hell knows? As long as I have a job and can get by, I'm happy with that for now. And what college in Virginia? And just a note--if you do decide to go to college, watch out for those Hollins girls. I know you may learn skills you need for the rest of your life, but I don't think some people are cut out for it and that's why it's a waste for some of them to go. I'll be going this fall, but basically because I don't want to be one of those guys who takes a year off to "find themselves" or something equally absurd. Those people are the ones likely to never go and I'd rather have some sort of higher form of education behind me when I'm out there trying to make it for real. Like seemingly everyone else, I'll be a communications major (journalism), but am just taking basics this semester, since any classes related to my major were snagged months ago. Whatever I end up doing, I know that things like science and math are unlikely to play a big part of it, but I must take those classes anyway, since they're still required in college for most people. What I'm hoping to get out of college are some of the more basic skills I need to learn to live life that I've blown off until this point, and hopefully, some classes that I will actually enjoy for once, which should happen my sophomore year, when more classes are open to me. I dropped out of high school after my junior year, not because of academic failure, but because I was just sick of spending 35 hours a week in a classroom (I guess you could've deemed me lazy, but I had been in school since a month after I turned 4 [preschool at that time, but still]). I also was going through a lot of emotional problems, heartbreak, and family issues. I had been kicked out by my mom during sophomore year and sent off to live with my stepdad, who was working 100 miles away from here, in a tiny efficiency apartment and attended a school where I knew no one. I never really recovered from that setback during the remainder of my high school career and I just gave up. I got my GED a while back, finishing the test in a fraction of the allotted time and getting a nearly perfect score. I always was a good student, getting A's and B's and a plethora of academic achievement awards. I've always been very creative and intelligent, and I go out of my way to learn new things daily. I'm a voracious reader and a talented writer, and now I am highly motivated to take my education to the next level. With only a GED, my options are somewhat limited, but I plan on starting classes in a few weeks at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois. I'm still not sure what I want to study, but I'm pretty sure I'll be taking some form of writing/journalism course, as well as psychology/sociology. I'll most likely continue taking classes even during the summer in order to make up for the year I missed (I should've graduated in 2002 and started college last fall) and I also plan on taking classes online or by mail in order to finish obtaining my high school diploma. My plan is to get the diploma and attend 2 years of community college, get good grades, and enable myself to transfer to a more prestigious academic institution. In a very pleasant surprise, a few weeks ago my best friend/ex-girlfriend's grandma (whom I have only met twice) offered to help pay for my college costs. She says she likes me and thinks I have a great mind, and she wants to see me develop it and make myself into something. I am very grateful to her for making such an offer, and now all the pieces seem to finally be in place for me to move on to the next chapter of my fledgling adult life. off topic off topic... I read this post and started to really get all mushy inside, since it was full of emotion and drama... ...then I realized who posted it, and I smiled on topic, GO TO COLLEGE. Hopefully, whatever you wish to study will have windows of opportunity open by emplyers looking for people like you. Guest Plushy Al Logan Report post Posted August 4, 2003 (edited) I fucked up when I atteneded a University, it left me in alot of debt, and I struggled to make it, for a year, so I decided to go to a Community College. I fucked up last semester, and I just fucked up this semester, I will try one more semester, and if I can't make it, I'll quit and sit on the railroad tracks until the train hits me. If I can't succeed in college there is nothing for me, I'm 20 years old, and I just realized I have nothing to put on my fuckin' resume that would be of any relevance to anyone. My attendance was great, and I turned all of my assignments, but I just can't get a grade over a C-. Whenever I'm in a writing class, I just can't put together a good essay. Right Now I'm in the last week of a class involving career exploration, the problem is we are doing assignments regarding Porfolio's and Resumes, and I don't have anything to put in either one of them, also I was supposed to interview someone in a field I'm interested in, but since I don't have any big interests, I couldn't think of anyone to interview.
