Wolf Pack Luger is one of the worst wrestlers I've ever seen. Also, it doesn't hurt that Luger had the primo of NWA guys helping to carry him to good matches back in the day. I think after getting screwed over the World Title so many times in different feds that he just stopped giving a shit.

What's the story with this? I've heard that Luger got screwed over with the NWA title - that Dusty told Flair to lose almost every night for a year and every night Flair would veto it - and I've also heard that Luger turned down the opportunity to wear the gold as he didn't think he was up to it (or didn't want to have the stigma of tanking the company). Which is true?
Guest WrestlingDeacon Posted July 30, 2003 Report Posted July 30, 2003 The true story of what I know, is that Dusty and a lot of others wanted to put the belt on Luger on several occaisions and Flair vetoed it during their feud in '88. Then again in '90 when Sting blew out his knee, they wanted to move it to Luger again and Flair begged to wait and drop it to Sting upon his return. Notice that Luger didn't win the NWA title until after Flair left for the WWF. Then during Luger's time in the WWF, he was supposed to win the belt at SummerSlam, but Vince wanted to stretch things out until Wrestlemania. During that time, it became apparent that the fans wanted Hart and Vince did that double elimination at the Rumble to gauge fan response. The plan was then for Luger to beat Yoko in the first title match of the night at Wrestlemania, then go on to drop it to Bret. However, Luger wound up flapping his gums in a bar and a reporter picked up on him slated to win the title and published it in the Sunday's paper. Of course, this was still the days of kayfabe and a pissed off Vince changed the booking to Luger jobbing to Yoko.

It was a week before Wrestlemania and management was convinced that Flair was the reason business was down and the decision was made to put the title on Luger on a house show in an attempt to upstage Warrior's title win a week later. It's a complicated story, but it went back and forth a few times over whether or not it would happen in Chicago or St. Louis. Flair had a clause in his contract that stated that he be notified in advance in writing anytime they wanted him to drop the title. This did not happen and Flair refused to job the title to Luger anyway, saying they should wait for Sting's return. He and Herd ended up in a shouting match. Luger, who did not want the title just a few weeks earlier at Wrestle War, now decided he did and never forgave Flair for not putting him over. In fact, he was the one who persuaded Nash to bury Flair when Kev had the book in '99, and Nash has openly admitted as much. The problems in 1988 were between Flair and Dusty and Luger was unfortunately caught in the middle. The problems in 1990 started with Flair and Herd and Luger ended up eternally hating Flair as a result.
