The Edge/Gangrel feud

Recommended Posts

I've been a big fan of Edge since he first came into the WWF back in 1998, and I thought the whole Edge/Gangrel feud could've been huge if booked properly. But, why did they scrap the feud for the sake of The Brood thing, early on? I think Russo wasted a great feud in Edge vs. Gangrel.

My guess--

Russo got carried away and booked too much of an unrealistic story, so they ended it before it got to be too unreal.

You had Edge, a mysterious guy who lives in the rafters and rarely speaks.

You had Gangrel claiming to have a past with Edge, and that "The same blood flows through their veins," and that Edge should join him.

Then you had Christian, Edge's little brother, who was on Gangrel's side.

It seemed to me that Gangrel was the Vampire, and that he had bitten Christian and turned him into one too (thus having Edge's family blood in his veins too), and Edge was either bitten but not fully turned yet, or else not bitten at all yet, but stuck as a societal outcast due to the vampires chasing him. The whole Spider-Man "I can never risk getting close to anyone I could possibly care about for fear that they may be harmed because of me" tortured soul essentially.

It's a good story, just not for a WRESTLING FEDERATION.

Good point.

But, I'm sure that the matches, fights, and confrontations would've made up for the "unrealistic storyline". I'm sure that if Gangrel had played with Edge's mind a bit more, not only would Edge would be pushed as a "tortured soul", but, also he would've been played the role of the "underdog, who had the fans' sympathy". If only the feud had been booked a little better, Gangrel would've been a full-blown heel along with Christian, and Edge would've had the fans behind him, because everyone would feel sorry for him for what Gangrel had been putting him through.

It's odd, now that I think about it, it could have been WWE's version of the Glacier/"Blood Runs Cold" angle--That is, a kooky little angle that delves into the supernatural that essentially exists outside of what's going on in the Fed proper. Glacier/Mortis/Wrath/Miller NEVER interacted much at all with anyone else in WCW except for some jobber matches until the whole angle was put to rest. This could have worked as something like that, only more successful.

Didn't they form the Brood as a continuation of the angle, because Edge eventually left, tearing Christian between him and Gangrel, and Christian showed his true colors by turning on Gangrel in a "blood bath match" to join Edge, and fuck up the rest of Gangrels WWF Tenure.

Hell probably got help with the storyline by one of the White wolf writers since Gangrel was originally their storyline name.

well...Either of them could cut a promo to save their lives at this point...

That's the REAL reason.

Yeah. Gangrel got jealous of Edge's popularity and turned on him (I think), and Christian went with Edge, forcing Gangrel to recruit the Hardyz for the New Brood.

As for the original Edge/Gangrel feud...I dunno why, but I really into that feud. The moment I saw Edge staring at Gangrel funny during one of his entrances in 98, I was like "Oh shit, this is gonna be good". I also think they missed the boat by not running with that feud.

I think if Gangrel had changed his image, even something as small as having black hair, he would have garnered a huge following.

I never got into that feud. My guess is Russo just dropped it due to the fact he has the attention span of a 5 year old.

I thought Gangrel was cool.

Of course, I was still a mark then, so hey, I was a dumbass then.

I think the fed just abandoned the angle when they found out the 3 of them could actually wrestle and didn't need this silly shit to get over.

I never really saw Gangrel as being a REAL vampire (in storyline terms). I was a fan of White Wolf so I understood where the idea came from. I just assumed Grel was one of those goths who took the game too seriously. I also assumed Edge represented a differant version of goths and he despises the make-up wearing Grel. I believed in my mark days that Gangrel recruited Christian to get Edge to join his fold.

Gangrel had a tight entrance and some badass music. Unfortunately, his biggest push culminated into jobbing to fucking X-Pac.
