Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted August 6, 2003 I was totally unaware that the Vikings passed up on Marcus Allen and drafted Darren Nelson.The reason was Allen supposedly wasn't a great receiver out of the backfield. Guest treble charged Report post Posted August 6, 2003 In '93, the Sens took Alexandre Daigle 1st overall (then grossly overpaid him, which I think in turn caused the NHL to put rules in place on how much young players could be played). They took him right in front of Chris Pronger, and other people who went in the first round that year were Paul Kariya, Rob Niedermayer, Jason Arnott, Jason Allison, Saku Koivu, and Todd Bertuzzi, among others. Also, how bout them taking Todd Fuller over Kobe. Or taking Adonal Foyle over T-Mac. Those are three boneheaded draft day goof ups I can think of. I think that the 86 draft has many goof ups, being that the best players in that draft ended up being Karl Malone ( 13) and Dennis Rodamn (2nd round). Well Todd Fuller was obviously a bad draft pick but Kobe would have only played for the Lakers, Bulls, or Knicks. Remember he was drafted by the Hornets and forced a trade to the Lakers. Jerry Rice is a good one though, but since he was drafted by my favorite football team, I am happy for that goof. Another one, is how about all those teams passing on Terrell Davis. Sure he is out of the league, but for the time he played, he was definately one of the best running backs in the league and helped Denver win two Super Bowls in a row. Speaking of goofs, how about the Colts taking Jeff George with the first pick. The guy with a great arm and nothing much else. Or the Chargers taking Ryan Leaf with the second pick. I look back to the argument over who should have been taken, Payton or Leaf, and now it is more like, "boy, was Leaf such a bust, he should have gone more like the 15th round. The baseball draft isn't an exact science although that is starting to change a little. For many years its just been how good you look in your uniform can up your draft position. To add to that a bigger goof in the sense with the be Brien Taylor by the Yankees with the #1 pick in '91. Actually that's sports in general. Same reason why Ryan Leaf gets to be the #2 pick in the draft and Joe Montana ends up as a 3rd round draft pick. Same reason why a pitcher out of high school who throws a 95 mph fastball but has no control over it and has no other good pitches might get drafted higher than a college pitcher who may only throw 90 but has two or three other pitches and has good command of those pitches. I'd also like to give a small vote to Trajan Langdon mainly because his senior year in high school Dick Vitale was calling him the second coming of Jesus at the Great Alaskan Shootout, but I guess you have to consider the source. And no matter what picks you throw out, Bowie over Jordan is the all time screw up. Bret Farve was a 2nd round pick. Shannon Sharpe was a 7TH round pick. Joe Montana was a 3rf round pick. It just proves just how much of a genius Jimmy Johnson was. As for my draft bust: I gotta go with LeBron over Carmelo. Something just tells me that that is going to end up being a bad move. In hindsight, yes. But Daigle was a god in the the Quebec major junior league for years...any team would've been nuts to pass on him at the time. And my first thought was Bowie over M.J., although in Portland's defense they already had Drexler.
