I've seen the VH1 specials about a million times and the performances don't really look worth checking out.

Well, on 5 DVD's that can theoretically hold 4 hours a piece, I think 20 hours would be enough.

It's the specials they showed on VH1 a few years ago. Everything is stuff you can see easily (and once in while they drag them out on VH1), so I'd say no unless you get a very good deal on it - I'm saying cheapo bin - ha!.

Well, on TV the 1985-1990 special with Franken hosting had Simple Minds performing "Alive And Kicking".

 

That's not on the DVD.

Well the main feature is the hour long specials.

 

While the extras are all the other stuff.

 

Al Franken was the best- He was such a complete asshole- it was hilarious

They had a hit song on the soundtrack of The Breakfast Club...I didn't like that movie

 

And The Breakfast Club of course starred former SNL cast member Anthony Michael Hall...I never liked him either

2. Clearance rights with various music and hosts would take forever. Given the hassle that Time Life goes through with their "The Muppet Show" Best of Series, Lions Gate probably sees it as a lost cause to do it

 

3. Too wide of a target audience for season/best of sets to work. Some fans of the show won't buy the Golden Age of the show (the first five years of SNL) and just buy episodes from the Hartman/Carvy/Meyers era onward and vice versa with buying just the first five seasons. And lets not even touch the nightmare that would be trying to sell the 1980-1986 seasons....

It sounds like the main feature is the 45 minute special and the extras are the performances. That's because some of the performances weren't in the clipped special.

They used to do a best of the previous season a week before the premiere and release it on video. I have best of 1975, best of 1991 and others. I wouldn't care about them releasing various seasons but if they're gonna release anthologies like that- well screw the music.

I don't really understand. Do they have to get permission from each host/musical guest to release it on DVD?

I think there is a demographic for the old school SNLs. There are still all those people who when I talk SNL talk about the first 5 years as being the best. I think the appeal of having the greatest seasons in SNL history (Well in many people's opinion) would be a big appeal.

 

In Lorne's mind the 80-85 seasons never existed and there's already a Best of Eddie Murphy so need to release those seasons.

 

I'd just like to see them use the material they have and do something with it. Maybe for the 30th anniversary??
