Guest Retro Rob Posted August 15, 2003 Report Posted August 15, 2003 Every hour or so I have this "Message Window" pop up telling me that if I want to stop having these messages I need to purchase some software from www.ENDADS.com. At that site they say how this could also be a security issue, so I should buy their product. Any way of stopping this shit?
swan Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 For Windows 2000 and XP * Go to start and click Run * Type services.msc * Double-click on Messenger. * In the Messenger Properties window, select Stop, then choose Disable as the Startup Type. * Click OK. For Windows 95, 98, and ME * Under Control Panel, select Add/Remove. * Select Windows Setup. * Select System Tools. * Click Details. * Uncheck WinPopUp. * Click OK.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 Thanks, I was wondering this myself because I was playing Diablo a few nights ago and got one of those god-damn ads that minimized my game and killed my guy...
Guest Retro Rob Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 Thanks. They were becoming incredibly annoying.
Guest Fook Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 Thanks for the info. I was getting those ads too and they were getting annoying.
Guest The Old Me Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 I use a couple of reg cleaners and spybots for shit like that and it usually prevents any such problems.
Guest Fook Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 I use Ad-Aware and it would get rid of them temporarily, but they'd always come back. Hopefully now they're gone forever.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 Haven't had once since reading this thread. Quick question -- was whatever I did going to interfere with any other programs, or does it just eliminate those ads?...
Lando Griffin Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 Messenger is useless for home users. It's more for sending messages to people on a LAN saying things like "The server is going down, please save all your work now." I'm 99% sure nothing else is affected by getting rid of Messenger, but if some program does need it, you should probably get rid of that program.
Repo Man jr Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 I've been getting this too. Thanks for the tips swan.
