the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2003 Well if you are going to do that, how many boys have never played at least some version of tee ball or instructional league baseball?
Gert T 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2003 I say Baseball. Football is the National Passion. Exactly. And whoever had college basketball at #8 would probably not have that there if it wasn't so far away. People don't bet on Wimbledon or the US Open quite like the NCAA Tournament. I am a huge tennis fan too, just my best example.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2003 I am sure the average sport fan knows more about Tiger Woods or the Williams sisters than say how the BCS works. That's only 3 people. College Football goes beyond individual players. They come and go. It's the other things that make it great. The Marching bands, the rivalries, the huge crowds. The soft schedules, the blowouts, the popularity contest to see who is #1, Beano Cook proclaiming Ron Prowles as The Greatest QB in the history of Notre Dame. You see you're giving reasons why you don't like it. This isn't about what you prefer. This is what more people in the U.S. follow. College football despite any problems it may have is the focal point Saturday's during the fall. Golf and Tennis are the majors and a few other events for Golf. Other than that, sorry but most people don't care about Tennis; and unless Woods is playing they don't really follow golf.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2003 Tampa came in the 70s. The Dolphins have been there forever. Only teams that are really new are the NHL and MLB teams. Florida's has alot of residents who are transplants from other parts of the country. You spend your entire life a Yankee or Red Sox fan. You're not going to become a Devil Ray or Marlin fan. Red Baron 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2003 I can see why Golf is up there in the one persons list. When there is a Major tournament, or a big event it'll draw ratings. When Tiger Woods is in the tournament, it'll draw ratings. When an American leads the field in a major tournament, it draws ratings. Ryder cup matches draw ratings. Add them up, its pretty damn popular. For hockey its odd. The states most popular games, its usually in Phili, Minnesota, Columbus, Buffalo, Detroit, New York, Washington, St. Louis, the odd times Boston and Chicago. Its just build on fan base, like Minnesota, or the Red Wings, and some have Historic value, such as Boston, Chicago, New York. Buffalo is close to the Canadian border, St. Louis has always been successful since its entry in 67. Columbus....Well, there isn't anythin in Columbus

MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2003 Baseball is more international now, although more in Asia, Mexico and Carribean. The NFL is trying Europe but I don't think it will ever catch on..mainly because of Soccer. NASCAR is pretty much American, although auto racing in general is probably right behind Soccer in terms of international scope. But as far as American National Pastime is concerned, I think right now its football. Baseball is actually getting its legs back and if they can get the parity going like in football (and you see Parity in the 2 Central Divisions, but nowhere else really) but I dont think Baseball will ever catch up unless for some stupid reason theres a football strike or something. The way the season is in football lends it to be more popular, since just about every game is important and the whole on any given sunday spiel. Where as in baseball, its been said (with an exception to the Tigers..) that your team is going to win 60 games and lose 60 games, and its what your team does in the other 42 that matters the most. So theres not much importantce on every single game until it comes down to September and then its just the 10 or so teams that might be fighting for 2 or 3 playoff spots. Basketball would probably be BEHIND NASCAR on my list, I don't think it appeals to as many people as Baseball. Football or NASCAR. Theres no way Hockey, Golf or Soccer can even come close to any of the above sports.
