That was one cool move.

Imagine him hurting Luger in an angle, taking advantage of it and destroying him in a match by using the Torture Rack.

Luger's comeback trail would have put him over way better than Lex Express did.

On the other hand, Luger picking flowers naked in a field with pan flute music in the background would probably put him over more than Lex Express. :P

I believe the original plan was to have Luger win the belt at SummerSlam then feud with Borga. Drop the belt to him at Survivor Series and then win it back at Wrestlemania the following year after winning the Rumble to get his title shot. Yes, Borga was going to main event Wrestlemania.

I believe the plan was...

Taker over Yoko at the Royal Rumble

Borga over Taker shortly thereafter

Luger over Borga at WrestleMania

Obviously that was changed due to Taker's bad back and him needing time off. Borga's nagging injuries, which kept him off 2 back-to-back PPVs, killed off his character and he was never seen in the WWF again.

The WWE has a show in Findland pretty soon. I wonder if Borga might end up in attendence.

He broke his ankle 2 days before the Royal Rumble 94, and he couldn't make it back for his WM bout vs Quake

I believe it was against Rick Steiner at MSG 7 days before. Could be wrong.

I think it was the MSG where Owen won a RR match and The Quebecers regained the tag titles.

<<Marked for Borga. Too bad he shattered his ankle right before his big push.

If anybody has the RR 94 WWF Magazine results issue, it states who missed the Rumble and Why

Booger, Kamala, Borga all missed (Kamala?)

Royal Rumble 1994- Bam Bam Bigelow replaced Ludvig Borga in the match against Tatanka. Kwang the Ninja, Sparky Plugg, and Virgil replaced Ludvig Borga, Kamala, and the 1-2-3 Kid in the Rumble. Some of the outcomes of matches were changed. The Undertaker was originally supposed to win the casket match and the WWF title. Soon after, he was scheduled to drop the title to Ludvig Borga before Wrestlemania. This would've set up a match against Lex Luger at Wrestlemania since Luger was scheduled to be the lone winner of the Royal Rumble. The plan was to have Yokozuna take some time off to lose some weight (his doctor was worried about his condition). The Undertaker badly needed some time off due to his back problems (that's why the WWF gave him the gimmick. The bodysuit that he wears actually covers up a back brace that he wears when he wrestles). Luger would then have all of the spotlight, and be turned into a new Hulk Hogan personality as the new WWF Champion (at Wrestlemania). This is what happened: Mark Callaway's (The Undertaker) back problems worsened dramatically, so he needed to be written out of the script right away. Yokozuna didn't bother to listen to his doctor and decided to stay with the WWF. In the meantime, Ludvig Borga absolutely destroyed his ankle during a match (either against Rick Steiner or in a battle royal), and the WWF had to let him go. Bret Hart was chosen to win the title since he had been cheated out of a title shot when Hogan left the WWF. McMahon figured that he could give Luger the title sometime down the road. Luger eventually became extremely upset at not having the title and left the WWF for WCW. (I think I got off on a tanget!) [DG]

The Kid was out with an injury, sustained when he took a bump out of the ring at the MSG Rumble. Kamala was going to be brought back for a one-shot, he hadn't been on TV since about June of 93.

I think that was the TV debut for both Kwang and Bob Holly. There had been promos by both men for a few weeks prior to the PPV but no indication was made that they would be on the show. Kwang's promos had me questioning whether or not the WWF had signed the Great Muta.

I had always heard that the Undertaker took time off following RR to be with his new wife and take care of personal family problems. Also, the double ending to the RR was done, because Vince was losing faith in Luger and the fans were very much behind Bret. Luger was penciled in to beat Yoko at Wrestlemania and then go on to drop the belt to Hart later in the show. However, Luger got drunk the night before the show and blabbed this to a reporter at a bar who published it in the paper the next day. Vince was pissed at the breaking of kayfabe and changed the booking, burying Luger pretty much after that. Although he eventually was moved into a tag team with Davey Boy Smith and they opened Wrestlemania 11 versus the Blu Twins.

I had heard the same. The only thing I can come up with to perhaps disprove that is Luger showed up a TV taping (maybe the 2/22 show in Bethlehem but I don't know for sure) with the heavyweight title and was announced as the champion prior to a tag match pitting he and Tatanka against Yoko and Kwang.

If Vince didn't want the "cat getting out of the bag" in regards to WrestleMania, it seems odd he would put Luger in front of several thousand people (and wrestling mag reporters / photographers, no doubt) with the title belt but at the same time punish him for being unprofessional to that degree.

From a SK post on RSPW, so take it for what it's worth...

One of the most famous pre-show booking changes came before

Wrestlemania X in 1994. The main event was the WWF champion

defending the WWF title twice in the same evening -- once with

Lex Luger against champion Yokozuna and then whoever was

champion after that match defending against Bret Hart later in

the evening. Due to Yoko's size and lack of stamina, the only

booking that made sense was Luger going over Yokozuna for the

title and then going on to defend it against Bret Hart in the

main event. BUT, Luger and some friends went to a local bar the

night before the show and got decently drunk. Unfortunately for

them, a reporter for a New York paper was there as well, and

Luger proceeded to brag about how he was scheduled to beat

Yokozuna and finally get the WWF title. The article was

published in the paper the morning of the show, trumpeting

Luger's own admittance of the ending, and as a result the show

was changed so that Luger lost by DQ and Yoko went on to lose

the title to Bret Hart in the main event, which didn't affect

things too much because Hart was getting the belt either way.

Credence is lended to this story by reports from fans at TV

tapings leading up to WMX, where the WWF would have Luger

"steal" the title from Yokozuna and come out introduced as the

"WWF World champion" (to annoy Jim Cornette, as the storyline

went) in order to judge the pop Luger received as champion.

Guess it wasn't good enough.

Yeah, I heard the title steal thing before and was going to mention that in response to your first post. I just think Vince wanted to go with Luger because he was very close to Hogan, but he knew something wasn't quite right, i.e. fans looking for a different style of top face. This was back when Vince actually listend to the fans.

MOM were on top during a period when the tag division was really struggling. Most of the teams who were a large part of the tag division the previous year (Steiners, Money Inc., Natural Disasters, Road Warriors, Public Enemy) were either not active in the WWF or fallen from prominence. Hence why you have the 1-2-3 Kid and Marty Jannetty title blip and the Quebecers as the top heel team. The division really didn't recover until the rise of the Smoking Gunns and the first time you saw super teams forming to win the title (Shawn and Diesel, Owen and Yoko). Basically, they were all there was.

That was my only hope of a trick question. (applauds)

Too bad this wasn't 1995 otherwise I'd question Mabels Main Event push. (Simpsons Style shudder)
