Are ring-outs cheap?

Recommended Posts

In fighting games, do you consider ring outs to be cheap? I mean, sure it's cheap if that's someone's main strategy, but if someone does it once in a while (on purpose, not by accident, those don't count) is it cheap or is that just tough luck for the person that got tossed?

Personally, if someone is backing me into the edge and I feel that they are trying to get a ring out on me, I'll throw them out, but other than that I try not to do it.

Some people I know, claim that ring outs are just about the cheesiest thing you can do and will actually get pissed if they get thrown out.

If you ask me, the functionality of a ring out is there for a reason and as long as you don't overdo it, adds a welcome element to the game.

Against tough CPU opponents: good.

Against two players of about equal skill: can be bad.

Personally, I only do them on purpose as an insult. I may have a major lead in a round, and when my opponent's life bar is about empty or as a deathblow, knock him/her out of the ring.

It's like, "I could have finished you off, but instead I'm going to watch you fall to your doom, MUHAHAHAH!!" Fighting Vipers would let you kinda do that, only as a deathblow, that is, but it had enclosed fighting areas so doing so would knock your opponent through a wall/fence instead of sending them plunging to their doom.

I prefer Zero Divide's way of doing it, though. You should be able to grab onto the edge of the ring in elevated rings. Maybe the opponent in the ring can stomp on your hand or something, and you can try to fight back if you're partly back in the ring, but they should count you as being in the match as long as you don't take the big plunge.

Games like VF which have a ring but it's just a little platform--takes the fun out of it. It should be high up.

I think there funny. I usually manage to keep myself away from the edge but I'm pretty good at backing someone up to the edge and tossing them. Hell I'm really good at cornering anybody in any fighting game.

What really sucks is when you're fighting close to the edge and you accidentally roll the wrong way..out of the ring.

To me ring outs are just part of the game. Yes it sucks when you're one or two hits from knocking someone out and you get tossed, but when there's a computer controlled opponent that's blocking everything you do until you're able to get that one grab and toss them it makes it all worthwhile.

Besides, I like to use Link and a lot of Link's grabs toss his opponents out. :D

Not really, they can be but usually are not since a good opponents aim is not to ring out you right from the get go. Also ringouts can cause some much needed tension during some matches as you try to get the hell away from the ledge...plus I dread to think of 3d fighting games with corners.

Ring outs are just apart of the game. Sure, might not like it somedays as when I play against Nightmare (bastard was always going for it) or when I face a character that ALWAYS blocked (I'm looking at you, Taki) I like the feature.

I've played some friends that have used that as a strat, but it's a poor strat really. Odds are, is if someone has a good throw reversal or can make the proper defensive move while being near a ring out, usually the person using the strat gets KO'd by it.

Personally, since I've got little skill right now in fighter games, I try not using it as a focus. If I throw them out, then yah, I'll use it. If not, then I'll just beat them one on one.

Heh... Link's cheap throw where he twists your arm and then hits you in the back (the one that's really good for ring outs) has gotten me through some really annoying weapon master fights.

I agree that it's fun to do it as an insult to the person you're fighting.... once in a while. Whenever I get a throw that I know is going to knock the person out, as soon as I hit it and the animation of the throw starts, I pause the game, look at my opponent and smile... then unpause and watch them fall to their death.

In SC2, I like to use either Ivy or Link to toss people out. Both have cool throws to do it with, and your back is towards the end when you start it out, so people don't see it coming as often (not until they know to look for it anyway).

But like I said, I only do it to piss off my opponent once in a while or against the computer when I feel like ending the match.
