The One and Only Angel Season 5 Thread

Ah!! So... Much... Red... Lines....

Although I peaked at one. And if I read that one correctly, then I can't imagine how the rest of it will end.

Angel in a half hour. Jeez, how weird is it that we're five episodes away from Joss Whedon going from 3 promoted tv shows to nothing?

I finally got to see the new opening credits, and they are quite awesome. I'm kinda lost on certain things, though, seeing as how I missed last week's episode (like what the hell's going on with Gunn and who is this Hamilton guy?).

Drew Goddard, I love you.

I LOVED tonight's episode, but, well, that seems to be the trend with Angel this season. I wasn't a fan of Cyvus Vail, but seeing Sahjan again was really cool. Vincent Kartheiser...I don't know, I couldn't stand him in some of season 4, but he was great in this episode. I'm loving Adam Baldwin as Hamilton, and Illyria is a nice change of pace from Fred; I'm really enjoying her scenes, especially with Wesley (and making Spike her pet). Today's episode gets an A from me~

Hmmmmm, this was a good episode. Not anywhere near "A Hole in the World" good, but still a good episode. I'm not in the mood to do the list thing right now, so I'll do it later.

Connor never really bothered me. He certainly wasn't as annoying as season five Dawn.

Good episode, but not as big as the others we've been having lately. Funny watching Connor go from all goth and moody lunatic to potential Buffy Scooby. And I like how they wove Wesley and Illyria into the story.

So does anyone think that Connor knows the truth, but is hiding it? They never really said whether or not Connor regained his memories.

The whole "there's nothing he can show me that I haven't already seen" line tells me he did regain them.

Exactly. Connor knows, he just decided to go back to his happy life at Stanford. The way he handled the ax after seeing him bumble with weapons before showed that. Had to love Angel's reaction to "there's nothing he can show me that I haven't already seen".

I thought that ep was brilliant. It wasn't like "Hole in the World", but it wasn't supposed to be. It was much more low key in ways, yet it still did a lot with Wes/Illyria/Angel/Connor/Gunn. The relationship between Illyria and Wesley is amazing, I'm loving seeing it all play out. I had to admit, I marked when Illyria went "he doesn't follow you anymore" and bitchslapped Angel across the room.

Connor - "I sorta have a thing for older women"

Angel - "They were supposed to remove that"

GOLD x 10

Angel was great this ep too, doing the doting father thing. I mean, fixing Connor's collar before he fights a demon, the cutesy "you have your whole life ahead of you" stuff, and especially "You go to Stanford?". Excellent stuff.

I actually think this is my favorite episode of the season right now. That flashback sequence that encompassed the Connor arc was really cool, I must see it again.

I'm glad Joss and co. didn't forget about the whole Sajahn prophecy thing.

Oh, and my favorite line: "This one is lusting after me."

I thought I'd plug The Bronze: Beta (www.bronzebeta.com) message board, especially after last night. The discussion itself isn't anything you can't find in this thread, but the one thing it does have is VIP visits. Last night, Drew Goddard showed up. Joss Whedon has shown before. So, yes, this board is awesome in some respects. Apparently after episode 20 Drew AND Steven S. DeKnight are going to be making an appearance.

It's just too awesome.

This was my favorite of the season. The Angel/Connor/Sahjan stuff was great. Like Sahjan said, connor had free will. Connor chose the made-up memories, and yet he didn't resent Angel at all and seemed to understand why Angel did things and was somewhat thankful (Didn't he say something along the lines of "that's what father's do."). Plus they played up just bout everything within the Connor arc.

I loved the Illyria/Wesley interplay this week, especially concerning Angel. She was questioning why Angel was in charge and Wesley replying that he's earned their trust, and it all played out in that episode. In a sense, it wa as if both Wesley and Angel had betrayed each other.

Gunn refusing Hamilton was cool. It's making me think that the Senior Partner's had something else in store for Gunn, and that Illyria was a miscalculation on their part in terms of how Gunn was supposed to lose his "legal mind".

Oh mommy, that was what I call good television. The Connor/Angel dialogue was VERY similar to the dialogue from last seasons finale, which was awesome. Illyria might just overtake Harmony as the breakout star of the year (ok.. second to GUNN, who continues to rule it) as the stuff with Spike ("She could hurt someone" "We'll make Spike do it"!!!) was tops. Tons of continutity here and the way they worked in Connor was brilliant, and much like last season when he could see who Jasmine was but went along with it anyways. He's doing it for his family, as they don't know who he is, and Angels (or I should say "Davids") reactions during all of that was on the mark. The scene with Gunn just worked as he continues to be the allstar of season 5. The thing at the end with Wes and Illyria and Wes finding out what he had done in the past was fucking righteous.

Right now on SPACE, they are rerunning Buffy Season 3 (Grad day part 2 was on last night) and Angel (Conner is about to be born), which puts SO much of this stuff into perspective. If they had to go out, I'm glad they are going out hitting all the right notes.

A couple of thoughts:

"I have this thing for older women."

"They were supposed to fix that..."

"Wha-?"

"Nothing!"

Heh heh.

Spike continues to be one of the most consistently entertaining guys on television. Marsters has his punk schtick down perfectly by this point, and can get massive laffs just by fussing over a clipboard.

I like that they're FINALLY doing something interesting with Gunn. He's been a boring, one-note character throughout the series' run (tough angry black guy from da hood), and this season was the first time I've ever been remotely interested in or sympathetic with him. Although I still don't see how the Fred/Ilyria deal is supposed to be his fault, all he did was sign some damn papers.

Ilyria is a fascinating character, she's unique in the Buffyverse, and in her simple physical look, too. (How the hell do they get her to look like that? It's not just makeup, it looks like she's constantly standing in the shadows even in a bright room, plus with a blue light shining down on her head.) I can't even tell it's Amy Acker at all just by looking at her, although Fred's old voice does creep out every now and then. And oh yeah, Connor wasn't the only one lusting after her, at least while I was watching it.

Also, how weird is it that Wesley Windham Pryce of all people became the darkest, most depressing character on any Joss show ever?

A side note, something I just noticed today: why is it that ALL of the major black characters in the Buffyverse look alike? Mr. Trick, that one Initiative soldier, Principal Wood, Gunn, they're all lanky dudes around 30 years old with shaved heads and usually some sort of facial hair. Eh?

Mr. Trick wasn't bald and Forrest - the Initiative guy - didn't have facial hair, but yeah, aside from Trick, Forrest, Wood, and Gunn all look similar especially Forrest and Gunn.

Gunn wasn't so much a one-note character, but it was that perception they had to put forth. He's been the muscle for two seasons, and Wolfram and Hart gave him a real purpose in the group. He's sort of been the outsider in a way, which is what they tried to project in an episode like "The Old Gang of Mine". He did the dirty work, and that was pretty much it. If you remember the last episode of Season Four (name escapes me), Gunn was asking what was his role, why did Wolfram and Hart want him, what was his importance. I really like that they gave him a real niche this season, and let that play out.

Well RRR you were right, this season is going DEEP.

I was in class today and I was really bored, so I started thinking about the arc of Angel, the show not the character. And if you watch the first episode, you never saw any other episode, and told you where the series is now, you wouldn't be THAT shocked. But how they got there, you would be pretty shocked.

If you think about, how Angel got to be apart of W&H was planned out by the senior partners. W&H brings back Darla, Darla and Angel bang, Connor is born, Wes steals Connor, he becomes older later on, he comes back, Connor and Cordy bang, Jasmine is born, Connor goes crazy because of Jasmine/Cordy deal, Angel signs to be the CEO of W&H so Connor can have a normal life.

All the events proceed the next.

Which is what makes it really hard to imagine how they'd get to here if they had the Beast all season.

You just blew my mind. There had to be a connection between Jasmine and WR&H, either she played them or they played her, because we were led to believe all THAT happened because of Jasmine.

That is why I am here.

We are talking about Joss Whedon, nuff said.

Well, I guess they could have played up that "Beast came out of the place where Connor was born" and the fact he knew him, but jeez it would have been hard.

And in watching Buffy last night, I really noticed how decidedly younger David looks... and vampires aren't supposed to age. So, as much as it sucks, I guess they have to end Angel before they're hauling out the soft lights and trying to fill in the wrinkles around David's eyes with embalmer's wax.

I can very easily imagine The BEAST going the whole season as Big Bad.

*Imagines*

:)

You could make the case for ONE other big bad that season, "the master" if you will, but they had FOUR; and all in a short period of time. And you could even consider Conner to be one of the baddies.

Beast and Cordelia were just Jasmine's lackeys in theory though, right? Who was the fourth then?

Looks like Angel did a 2.5 last night.

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, April 21, 2004

"American Idol" wasn't enough to put FOX at the top of Wednesday night's ratings -- at least by one measure.

NBC posted an 8.3 rating/13 share in primetime to beat FOX's 8.0/13 in households (FOX held a slight edge in total viewers, 12.73 million to 12.6 million for NBC). ABC, 6.5/11, edged CBS, 6.2/10, in the race for third. The WB was fifth at 2.7/4, followed by UPN at 2.1/3.

FOX did score a win in the valuable adults 18-49 demographic, averaging a 5.7 rating for the night. ABC was second at 4.1, followed by NBC at 4.0. CBS averaged 2.4, The WB 1.9 and UPN 1.3.

"That '70s Show" (6.2/11) and "American Idol" (12.2/20) combined to average 9.2/16 for FOX at 8 p.m. NBC took second with "The Most Outrageous Moments on Live TV." CBS posted a 6.0/10 with "60 Minutes II," and ABC was fourth with two episodes of "My Wife and Kids." "Smallville," 2.8/5, put The WB in fifth, ahead of "Star Trek: Enterprise," 2.2/4, on UPN.

ABC led the pack at 9 p.m. with "The Bachelor," 7.9/12. "The West Wing," 7.2/11, kept NBC in second, while FOX dropped to third with "The O.C.," 6.8/11. Repeats of "The King of Queens" and "Yes, Dear" finished fourth for CBS. "Angel," 2.5/4, kept The WB in fifth. UPN's "I'm Still Alive" trailed.

NBC's "Law & Order" dominated the 10 p.m. hour with an 11.4/19. CBS' "48 Hours Investigates" was second at 7.0/11, beating ABC's "Extreme Makeover," 6.5/11.

Angelus.

What really sucks is that I _hate_ every show Angel competes with. Ok, I hate the OC, hate Yes Dear, am indifferent to KOQ adn WW, and I watch AI so I can't really complain about the freakin Bachelor... but still! THIS AIN'T RIGHT!
