EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2003 Ok guys, I'm gonna try and get an early start on tabulating the votes. So if you want to edit your picks from now on, leave a note under the ballot with the old picks, and the new picks.
treble 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2003 Yeah, I switched mine, too. Delgado's got better numbers over-all, pretty much, when compared to A-Rod and plays for a better team.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2003 Thanks Treble. That's a perfect way of updating your picks.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2003 (edited) This might give Delgado the Award. After the 4 HR's, people will take a look at his numbers and remember what a great year he's having. It might also be more justifible in some voters minds, because Toronto has a winning record. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2003 For what its worth, Win Shares through September 23rd has David Ortiz ranked 9th on the Red Sox, behind Ramirez, Nomar, Mueller, Trot Nixon, Pedro, Johnny Damon, Jason Varitek, and Kevin Millar. Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2003 So Mueller's 3rd on Boston. He's top 10 in OPS, Top 10 in batting, and is better defensively than Garciaparra, and Ramirez.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2003 On the Winning teams debate. Historically, voters have not elected MVPs from losing teams. A question though is how many times HAS the best player come from a losing team? Using Bill James' Win Shares, I went back 50 years to identify the best players of each year, and whether their teams had a sub-.500 record. It may not be a perfect method, but its based on hard statistics, and no "intangibles." Here's what I found. 12 times in the last 50 years, the best player came from a losing team. That works out to a 6% rate. Five times the league's best player from a losing team finished tied with a player from a winning team. Of the twelve, ten finished in the top ten of MVP voting. What does this exercise prove? That MVP voters HAVE historically considered players from losing teams.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2003 They consider it, but in most cases when push comes to shove they don't win though.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2003 Just out of curiousity, how does Dontrell rank 4th in MVP, but not at all in the Cy Young award?
Bored 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2003 Just out of curiousity, how does Dontrell rank 4th in MVP, but not at all in the Cy Young award? I was wondering how someone can win the MVP if he supposedly has three other teammates having MVP type seasons. Also like David Ortiz no one can convince me Bill Mueller is the best player on the Red Sox. Oh well its not like this is an exact science. The definitive votes will come tommorrow night...my votes. King Kamala 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2003 Just out of curiousity, how does Dontrell rank 4th in MVP, but not at all in the Cy Young award? It isn't best baseball player, it's most valuable to their team. Without Dontrelle I don't think the Marlins may have not made it into the playoffs.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2003 It isn't best baseball player, it's most valuable to their team. Without Dontrelle I don't think the Marlins may have not made it into the playoffs. But the same question remains. How do you pitch so well that you lead your team to the playoffs, and not pitch well enough to place in the Cy Young?
