Guest JMA Report post Posted October 5, 2003 "Beyond Re-Animator" is, of course, the sequel to the cult classic "Re-Animator." The movie is based on the story "Herbert West--Re-Animator" by H.P. Lovecraft. The sequel is a Sci-Fi pictures original and was on tonight. Being both a fan of Lovecraft and the original movie, I checked it out. I thought it was very well done. The sequel follows the story of Herbert West (who apparently survived the first film), a man who discovered a way to bring back the dead. The film takes place fifteen years after the original. West is now in jail after his one-time partner (Dan Cain) used his notes against him with the authorities. Things change when a doctor named Howard Philips (a take on Lovecraft's first and middle names) comes to work at the prison. Of course, this is just a preview. To understand everything you'll have to see the film yourself. Did anyone else watch this? If so, what did you think?

Guest JMA Report post Posted October 5, 2003 There's a "Bride of Re-Animator"? Wow. I didn't know that. Is it good? Does it have anything to do with what happened at the very end of "Re-Animator"?
PsychoDriver 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2003 Bride of Re-Animator is a great movie (not as good as part 1 though), On the old DVD they have a deleted scene that takes place right after the ending of first movie. Which explains alot I haven't seen Beyond Re-Animator yet, but I did tape it and will watch it later today. Wonder how he lived though the second movie. PsychoDriver 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2003 My thoughts: First off I love this series, Re-Animator and Bride of Re-Animator are favorites of mine. But this movie seemed to lack all the ingredients that made the first two so special. The story was weak (not even an explaination as to how Dr. West survived part 2), gone is all the pitch black humor replaced by dialogue that was very generic and about as unfunny as can be. Also gone are all the camp performances, For example instead of David Gale's great heel performance as Dr. Hill in the first two, we get some guy doing a bad Vincent Price impression as the main villian (Heck besides the always awesome Jeffrey Combs the film was filled with actor's giving community theater level performances) But despite all it's flaws... It's watchable thanks to the strong Re-Animator character (Still played to perfection by Jeffrey Combs) and some nice effects. But it's nowhere near as fun to watch as it's predecessors Hopefully the UnCut DVD version improves upon the TV Version.
Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2003 I loved it. I sat in my buddy Jason's living room, we watched it while eating pizza and making jokes about it. Totally MST3K'd it. But you know what? It was all in good fun, as this movie ruled. Ah, JMA is a fellow Lovecraft fan, eh? Then I suppose you know that the West character in the short story "Herbert West - Re-Animator" dies, right? I want a serious version of "Herbert West - Re-Animator" to come out. I really do. I want a serious version of "Herbert West - Re-Animator" to come out. I really do. Indeed. Killed by his own creations. It's a favorite story of mine. Lovecraft was WAY ahead of his time. I also have to disagree with anyone who calls the original Re-Animator "camp." Didn't seem very campy to me. A movie based on the original would be nice as well. The thing I really liked about the original Re-Animator movie was Herbert West being such an anti-hero. West occasionally tries to help other people but is mostly out for himself. The way he brings Dan Cain over to the "dark side" is fun to watch. Carl Hill was a great villain as well.
