Off to play with Maynard Ferguson

Recommended Posts

In a matter of minutes, I will be sharing a stage with one of my favorite trumpet players ever, one Maynard Ferguson. I'll be emceeing my jazz ensemble's concert and we'll be playing Gonna Fly Now with him and his band. Wish me luck.

Good luck man, don't expect to get it in this folder though, these people don't give jazz the respect it deserves.

Since as we all know Banky is one the foremost contributors of Jazz in this forum.

I'd like to say that I enjoy jazz, but I don't know much about it and would only be a guy that would read others' posts rather than make 'em.

Well all i can say is that was one of the most electrifying concerts I have ever been a part of. I received a lot of praise for my public speaking and my solo on Feelin' Alright.

And of course our star. I have unlimited respect for this man. Maynard is 75 and still actively touring and while he's not at his prime, he can outplay so many people out there. It's amazing.

I like jazz when it's really chaotic. The slow groovin' cool jazz thing doesn't do a whole lot for me.

How many people were at the concert?

690 people in a 600-seat house. Apparently they over-printed the tickets and we had 400 left, freaking us out into thinking there would be a pathetic attendance number, but we ended up going standing room only and filling the pit and aisles with extra chairs. It was a success in every way.

I like the Miles Davis material I've heard, f'rinstance, but not nearly as much as most people, I'd figure. It's more a genre of music I have respect for, than one I personally enjoy listening to. Same goes with most classical music for me.

Banky was right: this thread got no-sold. I don't want to sound bitchy or anything, but how many of you guys in here are musicians that have played alongside a living legend of your instrument? Even if he's not what he was 30 years ago, it's still an experience I will share with as many people as I can. Someday I hope to tell my children, trumpet players of course, about that night, and to show them old record album covers that are years and years old, and say I played with that man.

Never jammed out with any legends, although I'd shit if I did.
