I bet the Harts / Rougeaus had potential to save the card.

I don't know if it was politics per say. Had Gagne been AWA World Champion during that time, I'm sure we would have seen a Backlund / Gagne match - as we saw Bobby face off against the likes of Flair, Race, and Bockwinkel when they were title holders.

Nikoli Volkoff was one of the Mongols, right?

I believe they predated Nikolai by a few years.

I love you man, but I got you this time!

Nikolai Volkoff - The Russian Giant

Nikolai Volkoff, the powerhouse, the giant. A glowering Russian Winter of dismay and disaster. Stands 6'4" and weights 315 lbs. An incredible 64 inch chest, 23 inch biceps and 500 pound bench press. The ageless monster is wrestling into his fourth decade, still indomnitable, still feared, still a deadly finisher.

A 26 year veteran. Volkoff acheived fame as an 'amatuer' wrestler and body builder in his native Russian. A little remembered fact is that Volkoff competed for the USSR in the 1968 Mexico City Olympic games.

Volkoff began his wrestling career as a 'mongol' in 1970, wrestling as Beppo with trainer and champion Geeto Mongol. The Mongols, managed by Lou Albano went on to win the World Wide Wrestling Federation Tag Team Championship on June 15th, 1970 at Madison Square Gardre from Vicotr Rivera and Tony Marino. Later that year Volkoff as Beppo wrestled the Living Legend Bruno Samartino to a draw in the Garden on September 14th, 1970. The Mongol's continued undefeated as a Tag Team duo until leaving the North East.

The Mongols fought in Pittsburg until Volkoff's superior ability called him back to the limelight in New York. Volkoff fought WWWF champion Sammartino to a one hour draw at the Garden on March 14th, 1974. Later that summer Nikolai teamed with manager Fred Balssion to take on Sammartion and Chif Jay Strongbow. The significance of this match is that it was Fred Balssie's last match as an active wrestler on the East. Nicolai continued with the WWWF in N.Y. and fought in Louisianna, Georgia, Florida and Japan. In 1984, based in Atlanta, Volkoff was called back to the WWF by Vince McMahon, Jr. as part of the expansion takeover.

Here Nikolai Volkoff formed arguably the greatest Tag Team of all times with the Iron Sheik. On March 31st, 1985 they captured the WWF TAg TEam Championship at Madison Square Garden from BArry Windham and Mike Rotundo at Wrestlemania. The Team fought actively for several years, and the friends and gladiators continue to team together if occasion demands.

Volkoff, a master of the foreign object, (a skill taught to him, evidently, by his handler Nikita Breznikov), feared and reviled, continues with crowd firing frenzy. A luminary of the Independent Wrestling, his is regularly featured as the main event against fellow legends King Kong Bundys, Sgt. Slaughter, Superfly Snuka and great hall-of-famers worthy of his wrath.

Hart vs Hogan? Interesting...

I came across that post earlier on KM ... not too sure of if it's credible or not.

Let's say there was a tag match pitting the Harts against Hogan & Savage (which is odd in itself) and that Savage no-showed. I still don't see Bret main eventing against the Hulkster.

I'll post something on Wrestling Classics and see what I get.
