Just saw savage/steamboat for the first time

Now don't get me wrong it's a good match, but I've seen it plugged to the heavens so really there was no way I couldn't be dissapointed with it.

I didn't like how the face steamboat needed steele's help winning the match as it made him look weak IMO.

Also, there was no real attacking of steamboat's throat(That I noticed) which I thought took away from the psychology.

Granted, I know virtually nothing of the story behind it besides savage attacking steamboat with the bell and steele having a crush on liz but do I need to know in order to appreciate it?

I think every match that is in high regard will one day have a thread about it being "overrated".

I'm not sure if it makes Steamboat look weak because Steele stopped Savage from cheating. What made Savage look so strong though is that he had the match won when the ref was out. I'm assuming this was done because they had plans for the Savage-Steamboat feud to continue after WM (as can be seen by the SNME following WM3). That's neither here nor there though.

As for the throat thing, I thought Savage did go after it somewhat but no matter. It's still a great match despite that appalling lack of "psychology".

Enjoying a great match is usually an emotional reaction so if you didn't get caught up in the excitment of watching it, I doubt anyone can say anything to make you appreciate it differently.

It's not the greatest match of all time anyway; it was just 100 times more exciting than most everything else being done by the WWF at the time.

It is still great match that holds but all the good matches since tend to copy right from this match which is why you likely weren't impressed, since it's been duplicated...

I still give it ****1/4.

Compared with WWF: 1987 it deserves 5* but on the whole I'd give it ****1/2.

What makes it special is that it was the perfect climax to the series of matches they had dating back to the summer of 1986.

I certainly haven't seen all the matches that aired regionally from Boston, Phili, etc but I've heard that the finishes and signiture spots used in those matches - with Savage going over - were all used in the WrestleMania contest.

I guess a good comparison would be TLC 2's duplication of all the spots used in the previous ladder matches as well as the initial TLC ... but with a bit more added on.

Thanks for the helpful replies.

I'm downloading a lot of old-school matches at the moment and I don't think i've seen enough from that era to appreciate it.

I suppose i'd need to see the matches and events leading up to it to truly get wrapped up in it much like misawa/kawada 94 which as a stand-alone match I found incredibly dissapointing.

But let's not open up that can of worms.

It was a good match, and definately the best WWF match of the 80's, but it is a little overrated and about 4 1/2*. Keep in mind I didn't really know much about the feud when I first watched it, aside from the throat thing.

Steamboats throat was perfectly healed I thought, but I could be wrong.

Savage was going to attack the throat when the ref was out, but Steele prevented it. (and got kicked in the head for laughs)

They did a whole "We don't know what shape steamboat's throat is in" type deal didn't they?

God I miss that angle, when's the last time they had a injury angle around something like a throat...tired of the Knee injurie angles or neck injuries...

they need to take small body parts and injure those...

Damn. 0 for 5 tonight. I'm doing worse than Alfonso Soriano.

I coulda sworn Steamer was around several months before WM, or I'm just making it up to appeal to my own ego.

Did you think it was "overrated" at the time? Because you CAN'T look at matches from that far in the past and compare them to today's standards.
