Good lord....an 80's music thread

Recommended Posts

Guest Lord of The Curry

This thread is for those who wish to share their love of the music of the 80's in all of it's cheesy, stupid, wonderful splendor. The synthesizer beats and guitar solo's and the hair bands that ruled all. Post your fave bands or songs and as Martin Prince once said, " Now let's all share the goodness."

My personal faves....

Tarzan Boy by Baltimora

Bizzarre love triangle by New World Order

The Final Countdown by Europe

Don't Stop Belevin' by Journey

I've got plenty more but I'll wait to see if this sucka gets off the ground first....

That big Flock of Seagulls hit is fantastic.  "I Ran"...something like that.  There were actually a lot of great hit songs written in the 80s , but the production was so horrible and cheesy that almost nothing has aged gracefully.  In terms of what I actually listen to, the Replacements, Husker Du, Pixies, the Smiths, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello ("Everyday I Write The Book"= Most underrated song ever), and tons of other stuff that escapes me currently.  Once new wave died off in the mid 80s, though, mainstream pop turned to crap.

I don't mind admitting that the smiths are just about my favourite band of all time, save maybe the pixies. Other 80's music that kicked ass included Ozzy and the butthole surfers. And good ol Gary Numan.

* is listening to The Final Countdown by Europe while writing this thread*

If you're getting into the whole rock-genre of the 80's then that's a whole new ballgame. Some names of note....

The Smiths

Tears for Fears

The Cure

Talking Heads

Van Halen

Peter Gabriel

U2

Ramones (RIP Joey)

My secret love of 80's music would have to be anything done by Bon Jovi. Something about that guy....

I think the point of this thread was to list all the embarassing cheesy 80s pop hits you're too cool to admit that you liked. Not the great bands that everyone likes (Slayer, GNR, U2, etc..)

So, I will admit that I'm a big mark for Madonna's True Blue era. Men Without Hats and Cyndi Lauper were other guilty pleasures of mine. More as I think of them... :)

Well, sort of. Most people remember him because of "Jessie's Girl", but I choose to remember him from his starring role on The Human Target (which sucked, but gets props from me from the fact that it was based on an obscure DC Comics series--the Vertigo miniseries from a few years ago was great, though).

Well, I like mostly Hard Rock so of course I liked (and still do) some of the forgotten Hair bands of the era like Cinderella, Poison, Ratt, Dokken, Whitesnake, etc., and mainstays like Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Van Halen. And I won’t mention obvious faves like U2, Gn’R. But if we’re talkin’ about pop music and one hit wonders and the like then I have a lot of guilty pleasures:

“Purple Rain” and “Top Gun”, maybe my two favorite soundtracks of that period.

The Outfield and The Hooters. Nobody remembers them now, but they made some great albums. The Hooters were Cindy Lauper’s back-up band.

Speaking of Lauper, “Time After Time” and “On Through The Night”. Great stuff.

Journey. Steve Perry is The Man. “Greatest Hits” rules from top to bottom.

Asia’s first album. I believe they were the first true “supergroup.”

Air Supply. I’m a sucker for ballads.

Mr. Mister, but only their second album.

Survivor. Their “Rocky” stuff and “Search is Over”. Underrated ballad.

New Order is the only electronic band I ever liked.

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album and parts of “Bad”. Ok, so sue me.

George Michael and Wham! He rules, I tells ya.

Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Elton John, Tom Petty. I wouldn’t put them as “guilty pleasures”. They’re all awesome any way you slice it. Also include in there Bryan Adams and Phil Collins but in a lesser degree of awesomeness.

Some Duran Duran songs like “Reflex” and “Save a Prayer”. Also Power Station was great, not so Arcadia. Ugh.

Duran2’s Andy Taylor solo album “Thunder.” Also underrated and lost in the shuffle.

Robert Palmer’s solo work. “Addicted To Love” was indeed addictive.

Pseudo Echo’s cover of “Funky Town”. Great guitar.

INXS of course. RIP Michael Hutchance.

The Police and Sting’s solo work. Sting’s a genius.

Europe’s “Final Countdown” album.

Toto made some great songs as well. They were all studio musicians I believe, and they all played on MJ’s “Beat It.” One hell of a drummer. RIP Jeff Porcaro.

Alphaville’s “Forever Young.” Both versions.

Chicago. Their mostly-ballads period. Some of Peter Cetera’s solo work.

Don Henley’s solo albums. Great stuff with Bruce Hornsby.

Faith No More’s “The Real Thing” and “Angel Dust”albums.

Foreigner’s “4” is another great album from that time. Also Lou Gramm’s “Midnight Blue.” And of course, “I Want To Know What Love Is.”

Billy Ocean’s “Loverboy” and “When The Going Gets Tough”.

The Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me” and “Human”.

Boston’s “Third Stage” album.

Some specific songs: J. Geil’s Band “Centerfold”, The Church “Under The Milky Way”, Springfield “Jessie’s Girl”, Band Aid “Do They Know It’s Christmas”, Klymaxx “I Miss You”, Brenda Russell “Piano in the Dark”, Jimmy Harnen “Where Are You Now”, Eric Carmen “Make Me Lose Control”, Til Tuesday “Voices Carry.”

Songs I hated: “Take On Me”, “True”, “Come on Eileen”, “Tainted Love”, “Cars”, anything by Whitney except “One Moment in Time.”

Huey Lewis I hated except for “Jacob’s Ladder”.

I liked none of the bands Kinetic mentioned. Except the Replacement’s cover of Kiss’ “Black Diamond.” Sorry, Kinetic.

Great music, those 80’s. Peace.

Oh, my friend, don't apologize to me because you don't like the Smiths, Husker Du, Pixies, etc.  Apologize to your children for not having a record collection they can learn something from.  My father didn't and I've never forgiven him.

Oh man, where do I begin?!?!

For all around fave artists/bands of the era, I'd have to say Michael Jackson, New Edition, Stevie B., Duran Duran, Sweet Sensation, Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, Poison, and Bon Jovi are my faves.

I'm also a fan of Freestyle/Dance music, as I have a relative who worked with Stevie B. (probably one of the most well known freestyle artists) for a number of years, and grew up around the music.  I've heard probably every freestyle song EVER, and like the majority of it.

As far as songs of the era not by those artists, here goes the list:

George Michael/Wham "Careless Whisper" (best slow song EVER, IMO) and "Everything She Wants"

Rockwell "Somebody's Watching Me"

Corey Hart "Sunglasses At Night"

Kajagoogoo "Too Shy" (apparently this is the first song I was ever able to 'sing' at my young age of 3)

Falco "Rock Me Amadeus"

Survivor "Eye Of The Tiger" and "The Search Is Over"

Glenn  Medeiros "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You"

Belinda Carlisle "Heaven Is A Place On Earth"

Banananrama "Cruel Summer" and "Venus"

Flock Of Seagulls "I Ran"

Cutting Crew "Died In Your Arms"

Europe "The Final Countdown"

Warrant "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "Cherry Pie"

Young MC "Bust A Move"

Tone Loc "Wild Thing" "Funky Cold Medina"

Theme Song from "The Greatest American Hero"

Michael Damian "Rock On"

Ratt "Round and Round"

I have tons more, but need to get back to work.  One of the other things about freestyle is that a lot of things songs have been covered in some fashion.  I've got versions of Died In Your Arms (which was a big hit in clubs in '96-'97), Careless Whisper, Seperate Ways, Sunglasses At Night, and more.  Check 'em out if you're ever interested.

Kinetic, you seem to have execellent taste in music.  Husker Du, Big Black, and the Replacements kick ass.  Might I suggest a book entitled "Our Band Could Be Your Life"  it's a book about 80's indie rock and it's one of my favorite books ever.  And my favorite group to start in the 80's would be Fugazi.  Get 13 songs now, soon you too shall see the light.

Guns n' Roses, Led Zeppelin and Metallica started in the 80's, I'd hardly call them stupid.

Led Zeppelin started in the 60s, not the 80s.  So while they're not stupid...well, I'm sure you can finish this joke yourself.

Much as I can say I love Duran Duran and this style of music, I can't really name too many names.  I more or less like the style in general, of ones I can name though...

Wham! - Say, whatever happened to the other guy from Wham!? did they forget to wake him up, before they go go'ed?

Duran Duran - One of the coolest bands ever.  "Decade" is constantly in my CD player.  I also have an acoustic show of them from 1993, and the songs hold up without the synthesizers, a testament to how well written these songs actually were.

Depeche Mode - Noticeably darker and more "real" in tone than the other '80s synth-pop bands, Depeche Mode still has a following today for a good reason, even if they decayed in the '90s.

Then, let's not forget all the '80s one-hit wonders like A-ha ("Take on Me" rules, I actually bought their whole greatest hits CD for that one song, they're basically a Duran Duran rip-off with one good song), the folks behind "Come on Eileen", and the band that did "Tainted Love", among many others.

There's also all the cool cult bands of the '80s that I know nothing about, like the Pixies, The Smiths, Fugazi, etc.  And all the mainstream acts of the '90s that were so much more wholesome in the '80s (R.E.M., Metallica, U2, Madonna), etc.

Add all that in with hip-hop emerging with its own identity via Public Enemy on one end and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Run DMC, and breakdancing b-boys on the other, and the '80s is the most musically important decade of the 20th century, and possibly of all time.
