Mets apologize for slur

New scout stirs racial incident

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

PHOENIX - New Mets superscout Bill Singer started an ugly, racially charged barroom scene at the GM meetings at the Arizona Biltmore, placing his job in jeopardy and prompting a Mets apology, the Daily News has learned.

Singer made racially insensitive remarks to Dodgers assistant GM Kim Ng at a hotel bar at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, prompting Yankees GM Brian Cashman - Ng's former boss in the Bronx - to intercede, say sources familiar with the incident.

Word of the incident spread rapidly among GMs at the week-long meetings, which broke up yesterday.

"I am embarrassed by what I said when I met with Ng on Tuesday evening," Singer said in a statement released yesterday by the Mets. "My comments were truly inappropriate and I'm truly sorry. I have apologized to her and hope she will forgive me."

Executives from several teams had retreated to the hotel bar after watching Arizona Fall League play. According to people at the conference with knowledge of what happened, an apparently drunken Singer approached Ng and belligerently asked: "What are you doing here?"

"I'm working," Ng replied.

"What are you doing here?" Singer repeated.

"I'm the assistant general manager of the Dodgers."

"Where are you from?" Singer asked.

"I'm from Indiana," Ng said, referring to her birthplace. She was raised in Ridgewood, N.J.

"No, where are you from?" Singer asked.

"My family is originally from China," Ng said.

Singer then allegedly started speaking gibberish, making fun of Chinese - which led Cashman to act, sources said. Cashman declined to comment.

Ng, who just completed her second year as Dodgers vice president and assistant GM, was one of only three women to hold such a position in baseball operations this season. She's the highest-ranking Asian-American executive in the majors and could become the first female GM.

Ng spent four years with the Yanks as an assistant GM. At 29 she was the youngest in that position in baseball when she was hired. In May, Sports Illustrated named her the 38th most influential minority member in sports.

Last week the Mets hired Singer - a two-time 20-game winner during his 14-year major-league career with the Dodgers, Angels, Twins and Rangers - for one of three "superscout" positions. Singer, 59, previously served as a special assistant with the Pirates and has also worked for the Dodgers and Marlins.

"We learned of the matter recently and have addressed it with Bill Singer directly," Mets GM Jim Duquette said. "While I cannot share the particulars of that discussion with you, suffice it to say that his comments were entirely unacceptable and inconsistent with the values and standards of our organization.

"We have extended our apologies to Kim Ng and to the Dodgers organization."

As for Singer's job status, Duquette said: "Bill continues to be employed by us at the moment. However, this entire matter continues to be under review by the organization. We are reserving judgment on this."

Ng acknowledged the incident, but wouldn't elaborate. "There was a situation," she said. "I've talked to Jim Duquette about it. That's all I'm going to comment about it."

Jeez, if you get intimidated by Brian Cashman of all people to stop with the comments, then you KNOW you must be a pussy. I mean, how much less threatening can the guy look?

Too bad Shaq didn't make the comments -- the story would already be over...

That's because Shaq has demonstrated that he has the mental capacity of an eight year old.

Was I the only dude who imagined a baseball scout's hair turning blonde and making the bar explode?

Yes.
