Coldplay @ T in the Park 2003

Recommended Posts

I am doing this because I don't think that the new DVD caught the experience of Coldplay properly. Coldplay are dismissed as a boring and dismal band when in actual fact, their live show is very exciting.

They opened with the thumping 'Politik'. Probably will become one of the most underappreciated songs in the Coldplay catalogue because of the singles they brought out. It builds to some awesome choruses before finishing with one of the best song endings I have ever heard. It's the perfect gig opener, because it's lively and gets people in the mood.

'God Put a Smile Upon My Face' was next. Very good live because of the amazing light show. The song itself is quite amazing but add the stage show and you double the fun. Once again the song builds slowly to it's exciting conclusion. The ending lyrics were 'God Gave Me Light And Gave Me Dark, And Gave Me Tickets To T in The Park'. Cheesy, but it works.

'A Rush of Blood To The Head' is the first of a couple of tracks from the latest album just thrown in there to make up time, which is actually bad, considering they never even played 'Shiver' which is a song people would have wanted to hear. 'Daylight' was another song which was disappointing live.

'Trouble' was next and caused one of the biggest singalongs ( if not THE biggest singalong of the weekend ) and was the first REALLY great moment of their set. It's a beautiful song.

Can't remember the exact list of songs after that but 'One I Love' was in there somewhere. As was 'Don't Panic' and the really cool 'Everything's Not Lost'. All of these songs are GREAT live songs, especially 'One I Love' which is REALLY bouncy.

The last two songs on the main set were 'Yellow' and 'The Scientist'. The big yellow lights shining out during 'Yellow' was amazing and this song is totally amazing as well, with EVERYONE jumping for it. 'The Scientist' didn't need any lights or lasers to make it great though, with the song just being awesome on it's own.

We came out with an encore of 'Clocks' which got a huge response as expected. They used lasers in this one. The music in this one and Chris Martin's voice is actually better than it was the whole night, as this song seemed to be PERFECT and was the best song on the set. 'In My Place' was next, and Chris Martin climbed the lighting structure. The song itself was great, with the crowd getting quite involved.

'Amsterdam' was the final song before their cover which was 'Lips Like Sugar' peformed with Echo and the Bunnymen star Ian McCulloch. I left during this song.

Overall, Coldplay are the real deal live.
