Worst Final Fantasy Villain?

Recommended Posts

I have an honest question: When did Final Fantasy get all, for lack of a better word, ghey? I mean, I remember playing a Game Boy version when you fought lizards and other assorted medieval creatures and whatnot. Now I see the commercial and they've got guns and Japanese chicks singing.

What gives?

If you want to get technical, the GB FFs weren't FFs at all, FFL was really part of the Sa-Ga series, and FFA was Seiken Densetsu 1 (with SD2 better known here as Secret of Mana)

But I think most fans would point to either 7 or 8 as being the turning point. 8 is a given, 7 depends on what kind of fan you're dealing with

Revisionist history. They spent all of the time between MK1 and MKII building up to it, explaining that Kahn is the boss. MK does this often- go to GameFAQs and try to read the MK story FAQ, and read how many times they revised everyone's histories (remember, in MK1 Raiden wanted to DESTROY THE WORLD!).

The "revisionist history" is that Kahn was involved in MK1. Seriously, go read MK1's story. Go read the comic by Tobias. The words "Shao Kahn" are never said. Absolutely no connection to him is made to Shang. Shang Tsung's goal in MK1 was simply to corrupt the Shaolin tournament and feast on souls. There was nothing about winning it to let Kahn into Earth back then. The only reference to Shang having a boss in MK1 is when it says "his gods" gave him a curse where he must consume souls.

When MK II came out they changed the story to make it so Kahn was his boss all along and that he was fighting for Outworld in MK1. THAT was revisionist history.

Raiden did not really want to destroy the world. At least he didn't set out to enter MK1 to do it. It was more like an accident or side effect of allowing gods to participate.

I know, Sakura, that's what I was saying (that the revisionist history is that he works for Kahn).

And on the Raiden part, that I just remembered wrong then. Could have sworn his goal was to prove the gods' superiority over man and the end of the world, but yeah, you probably know more about it then me.

Ummm, all the way back in 6 I distinctly remember there being bishounen and bishoujo-like art in the instruction manuels- it was just kinda hard to show that kind of thing with SNES graphics. It first started showing up in the actual game at 7, when the system was powerful enough to do it, so yeah.

The whole point of it is that if Kahn loses he can't get into Earth. He's not stuck in Outworld (I'm assuming there's other dimensions he can go to), but he can't try for another invasion of Earth until the next MK tournament.

In the movies and modern games, yes. But the whole "Outworld must win 10 tournaments in a row to enter Earth" was not part of the game's story until MK Trilogy.

In the games the goal was not to win the tournament to take over Earth, it was to unbalance the furies and tip the scales of good and evil towards chaos. By tipping the scales the balance between worlds would be messed up and Kahn could invade Earth. Corrputing the pure and honorable Shaolin Tournament was the method, not the goal.

But yeah, Kahn can go into other dimensions. Actually that's what Outworld IS. It's like a graveyard or wasteland of dead realms.

I knew that (that part about Outworld's state, I mean), but the rest I didn't know and is interesting (that they revised all THAT, I mean). Okay, thanks for clearing it up.

He doesn't have much of a story in MK1. He basically just enters because Tsung was taunting him.

The end of the world thing is because when he takes over the tournament after winning he invites other gods and their battles are so powerful they end up destroying everything.

Ah. I just checked the GameFAQs story FAQ I was talking about and they give that story I just told (about wanting to prove his superority over man and destroy the world). Just goes to show you how much misinformation there is on the internet, I guess, hehe.

Oh. I know. There is a TON of misinformation on the net about MK. Both storyline and gameplay information. It's so confusing. There's the movies, comics, books, and it's all conflicting. Even just following the story in the games is hard because they change established canon all the time. They're also really vague. Like I said before, it has never actually said Liu Kang won MK II. Everyone assumes it(because ...it's Liu Kang) but they've never bothered to confirm it. They haven't said who won a MK since the first. The story is so messed up we don't even know for sure if MK3 is a tournament or not.

Angelslayer, I just remembered that you're right.

While hearing this phrase never gets old, I'm not even a part of the MK conversation, thus you must've meant someone else

Heh, sorry. I must have lost my train of thought. I meant Kamui/Duo/whateverthefreakthisweek.

If you want proof of what I'm saying look at the intro to MKII. That same site probably has it.

IIRC....

"500 years ago Shang Tsung was banished to the Earth Realm. With the aid of Goro he was to unbalance the furies and doom the planet to a chaotic existance. By seizing control of the Shaolin tournament he tried to tip the scales of order towards chaos. Only 7 warriors survived the battles and Shang Tsung's plan would come to a violent end at the hands of Liu Kang. Facing execution for his failure and the apparent death of Goro Shang Tsung convinces Shao Kahn to grant him a second chance. Shang Tsung's new plan is to lure his enemies to compete in Outworld where they will meet certain death by Shao Kahn himself."

Fun Fact: One of the pics from that intro is messed up. It shows Liu Kang beating Shang Tsung in the Warrior Shrine. That's impossible, as the final battle in MK1 is always in Goro's Lair.

Holy crap, I keep Duo for OVER A YEAR and change ONCE and you say that? That's really mild compared to how many times SOME people around here have changed their names.

But I thank you for recognizing my general correctness and superiority.

Well, I didn't even know you existed until two weeks ago, hence your quick name change not long after that caught me by surprise too

I thought you were using another posting name not too long ago. My bad.

I'm making a lot of mistakes today.

Mileena's story makes no sense. How could Kitana have grown up thinking Mileena was her twin sister? Did Mileena just NEVER take off her mask or what? Why did Shang make a mutant clone of Kitana in the first place?

Kahn is a real bastard though. He invades Edenia, kills the king, takes his queen as his own wife, then forces the princess to become his personal assassin. That's pretty evil.

Maybe Mileena could make her face look normal if she felt like it? /shrug

I'd just like to point out the insanity that is TSM- we managed to go from "worst Final Fantasy villains" to "Mortal Kombat endings". Seriously, what the fuck?

Maybe. She could just LIKE looking all messed up.

Kahn was originally not going to wear a mask and would look like Baraka(with the big teeth). Outside of concept art, we've never seen Kahn without his mask. I wonder what he looks like?

According to John Tobias Shang Tsung's human appearance is actually a disguise, he is really a horrible looking demon. He showed art of Shang's real appearance in Gamepro.

I don't think that was the point of it- if she liked looking like that, then she'd look like that all the time. Rather, the photo's supposed to be her revealing herself to Kitana. Either that or taking over with Baraka, in which case it would make sense for her to be in mutant form.

If she liked looking like that, she'd still look like that in UMK3- but she doesn't, she goes back to the clothed-face-look. See what I mean?

I have that. He looks pretty badass...with horns and all. I wanted to fight as him.

They also showed plans for other characters. Like Kintaro just being a Tiger-person in a white gi.

Well, the reality is that she wears a mask in UMK3 because she's a palatte swap. ALL the female ninjas wear it. Kitana has revealed herself to be the princess and is no longer an assassin in UMK3 yet still wears that outfit.

Actually UMK3 has a bit that shows she may be proud of her looks. In her Friendship she takes off the mask and looks in a mirror, appearing very happy with what she sees. Considering Friendships part of the story is kinda messed up though....

In MK Gold Kitana goes maskless yet Mileena is still wearing hers. Maybe she likes her looks yet hides them in public just to not draw attention to it.

Yeah, and the Kathy Long inspired character.
