Question for any Brits

OK, this might not belong here --- but there is something I've long wondered:

 

Why was Winston Churchill voted out of office in 1945? It seems odd to me that a country would vote the ruling party out of power on the brink of victory in the biggest war in history.

 

So, seeing as how I no virtually nothing about domestic British politics in 1945 --- what led to Winston losing?

I have wondered about that for a little while now and we Americans tend to have little but positive views of Churchill (he was a rather funny guy).
